Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Now I've decided on the 50 I've spent a rainy afternoon looking at the differences between the f 1.8 and the
f 1.4. The second lens is almost three times the price of the first, however, so I expect it should be much better.

    http://www.flickr.com/groups/canon50mm/discuss/72157610831589994/

Your reference to poor, harsh bokeh and blur is confirmed in all the reviews of the f 1.8. Also, flaring is much less with the f 1.4, so it will probably end with me buying that lens. Interestingly, any of the shops I have asked about this think that the f 1.8 is adequate.

I have to admit I'm a bit worried about the f 1.8 falling apart or developing problems. I came across a person here whose nifty fifty had to be sawn off the camera body not so long ago.

i thought i mentioned the sigma 50mm f1.4, anyway its the best 50mm f1.4 available for canon or nikon. there might still be issues with auto focus and faulty lenses, you'll have to check for recent reviews. tho if you buy it from warehouseexpress im sure you can send it back to them for free if theres a problem. http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma_50_1p4_c16/

it was designed a couple of years ago, the 1.8 and 1.4 canon 50mm's were designed in the late 80'searly 90's i believe.

exactly what do you mean when you say the 50mm has horrible bokeh? How is the sigma better than the nikon or canon, i have tried sigma and nikon and found nikon alot better... for lens... old does not mean worse... quite the opposite, newer lens have really dropped in quality in the last ten years... cheaper manufacturing and cheaper componants all have meant classic lens are holding if not exceeding their rrp

cheaper manufacturing and cheaper components mean cheaper lenses. if u want good lenses u pay more money. the pro lenses have gotten better. light hitting dslr sensors can bounce back into the lens not like with 35mm film. this can be a problem with old lenses. in the last 10years the zoom lens has taken over. people want sometime that does everything at a low cost. there are excellent lenses today, you pay for what you get.

generally sigma produce much cheaper alternatives(but inferior) to canon f2.8 lenses but the 50mm f1.4 produces excellent results, better than the canon 50mm f1.4.

by horrible bokeh i mean this http://photo.net/equipment/canon/ef50/

this shows the sigma(it has a rounded aperture blade design) http://www.16-9.net/raw/bokeh_f1_4.jpg

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭Anouilh

I have just read that the Nikon 50mm f 1.8 is probably the very best 50 for the price. It remains sharp, whereas the Canon equivalent softens at certain settings. Also 7 blades should give better bokeh.

Just one consideration. All the 50 lenses have different diameter sizes... to be taken into account when buying, as anyone with a collection of filters may have to buy a new set to accomodate a new lens.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭Anouilh

the 50mm f1.8 has **** bokeh. very harsh/distracting background blur. u can pick this lens up new for 90euro online, if u cant save up for the 85mm f1.8 go for the 50. the 85 might be a little long for street photography on a 1.6 crop sensor.
and its not just a portrait lens, i use it for everything. amazing image quality and bokeh for the price.

This 60mm macro lens can be used for portraits, it seems... though its value for street work may be limited?

    http://www.ephotozine.com/article/Tamron-SP-AF-60mm-F20-Di-II-Macro-11-11339

Release date is not available and it may be expensive.

    Worth waiting to see?

    60mm seems an interesting length.

As a habitual user of a Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF and an earlier AIS version both which I know very well and have printed negs up to 12x16 with them with no fall off at edges and no softening, even wide open and great bokeh. Even with 400 iso film on warmtone FB paper.

I have also used recently the sigma you are discussing as a loaner for a few rolls. I would disagree strongly with your findings, Its a good lens but just lacks that edge and colour resolution, I tried B&W and Colour film. I also found it focused slowly and also tracked more often with my Nikon F80 and had same results with it on a F5.

I would rate it at about 85% compared to my Nikkors.

The 15% is a little time lost shooting and the rest will show up in edge detail during enlargement, I tested one neg that printed great 8x10 and took it up to 12x16 and it just seemed to be lacking that crispness.

A problem? I thought that Tamron and Tokina are relatively good. Not as sharp, perhaps?

It's nice to see another thread on the nifty fifty came onto the Boards.

You linked to the thumbnail size of your photo.

If you go to your page with a choice of sizes:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/24723443@N04/3016081077/sizes/m/

You can choose the properties of whichever photo size is best for uploading here and post the photo url into the box with that looks like a postcard with a stamp and mountains on it. I always choose "medium" and then make page link to the largest size.

    Everyone has their own method.

Everybody seems to love this lens:

Flickr has several discussions on the front focusing problem and this is useful:

    http://photo.net/canon-eos-digital-camera-forum/00LCMc

At what to me is quite a hefty price I would like to get a lens that works straight off and not have to have it recalibrated.

It seems to be an issue on Canon bodies, though I'm not sure why.

Could you have deleted it by mistake? I got this message when I tried to view it on Flickr.

Also, there is a mandatory request by Flickr that any photo must link back to the download page. It's all quite time consuming so I'm going to take the Summer off from linking between Flickr and here.

It is easy to upload your photos directly to the Forum here, saving time and effort.

There are some fantastic photos in this thread; it's nearly inspiring me to get back on the streets with my camera. I love making photos of people on the streets, but for no apparent reason, i completely lost my confidence to do it a while ago and now find it terribly difficult.

I don't quite have the guts to share my photos, so I'll share the best street photography advice anyone ever gave me; go wider, go closer, go braver!

Perhaps this thread could give us all courage?

I feel quite exposed on the street with a zoom lens and am gradually getting the hang of looking at group activities and candid portraits.

The question of "which lens" has finally brought me to consider the 35mm f2 Canon, which, on a crop body, will behave like a "normal" 50 or 60 prime:

    http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/428-canon_35_2_5d

As ever, advice on the widom of this choice would be welcome.

It seems to be a good lens to buy overall, as it can be used on full frame and film bodies as well as digital.

I have almost decided on a 35mm f2 Canon prime lens as a choice for street photography. There are some good tips on this site:

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1165531.html

From reading the thread on the street festival in Cork it seems that some people can find zooms a bit OTT. Are many people using primes?

    Two Points here,

Courage to do street photography, to me that is half the fun. People’s attitude changes if they question you and you tell them some BS that you are a poor student out doing an assignment or some other tale of woe. Generally people are relieved I am not a member of the Guards!.

It is helpful to have business cards I find, cheap to do too, I have mine with a link and details on one side but also a copyright release on back , to get a blank just sign this one please. (If I am bothered seeking release that is). This opens a conversation, you get to hear a lot of stuff and get recommendations where to shoot but also sometimes you get under someone’s hard street exterior as they see you are harmless and relax with you around. I'll post an example of this after this post

In the end any thing like the above is just subterfuge to your own mind, the only way to get over it is push yourself. It never goes away either. You start the day a little raw, nervy and shooting from 1000 feet then by the end of the day people’s breath is fogging your lens!

Your lens sounds like a good choice, to me, again this is entirely subjective.

    The story behind this:

    Hughie:
In a dark foreboding back alley in the centre of Dublin that lies behind a crumbling Georgian house is an old stables, hidden away from the world. Inside is Hughie’s place a stable of 4 horses. Hughie owns two of the most fantastic horse drawn carriages, hand made, sadly under tarpaulins at time I found his place but the craftsmanship on the parts I could see were amazing.. One a black funeral hearse the other a white Cinderella Wedding Carriage. One of the two of these in Dublin.
Hughie is a face of Dublin few meet a man of many opinions and ideas on everything from economy to crime to the local history.
The horse is Blackie, he also has two mottled white horses he told me were Lipizzaner Horses, for the wedding carriage. We talked for ages about how his trade has changed, that the horse drawn black hearses are popular with the drug-dealers for funerals and how ordinary folk are now shying away from hiring him.
I’ll be back to photograph him and his horses when the carriages are next out.
