Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It is strange to think that the French laws in relation to street photography and the right of the individual to his or her image now make one think twice about going to France to take photos.

Not strictly street photography but I thought I might just throw it in with a little story.
This is a listed building, slap bang in the middle of Trim. It's an old school currently being used as a playschool and they duly painted the railings outside in a multitude of colours which weren't exactly in keeping with the tone of the buliding!
I shot this on film some weeks back (trying to use up a roll from the Boards.ie film meet) and I went back on Saturday with the DSLR but the railings have been returned to Black!
We'll probably never see them in these colours again, so here they are for posterity!

Shame about the railings being changed back, i think the colour adds a little charm and character to them.

Agreed far to often the old building get over looked, after all it was on the railings they painted.

Ok had a look through the thread while having a lazy Saturday Afternoon and inspired me to throw up some more of mine. (I know post whore!)

This is one of my earliest Digital Street Captures on an old Fuji Compact. Apologies on the border as I said this is one of my earlier ones. Taken in Cordoba (rest are from Dublin!)

    A personal favourite.

Having been asked if he would like to pose for a photo, the man on the left was delighted, called his friend over and both were really pleased to oblige.

now the question is is this in the realms of creative photography or documentary ? since it was a created scene

That surely doesn't matter Simp does it? Image is the image...it ain't short stories, or poems, or yaddah yaddah.

I thought it a commentary on just how unruly our streets have become since crazy pairs of triangles started terrorising people on our streets.

yeah Humber your probably right, I just ain't taken my tablets, I started sounding arty then ... jaysus spare me ... least it is not 10pm yet so I have time to rush out for a bottle of anti arti farti juice... preferably a cabernet!

How did you know it was a set up anyway?

I'm starting new year doing set up work mostly...well that's the plan. Less snaps more planning. I'm not going to be disguising the fact (it'll be hard to, as the shoots are gonna be a little off the wall).

How did I know, it just didn't smell right ..... ever seen two sandwich boxes discarded side by side so sweetly ...would they land on that side ? , the shoes, the clean hand, the lovely granite paviours..

but point is it's nit picking, like you rightly insinuated, this pic works and works well ..we are talking about it are we not ?

funilly enough I have two contrived projects in mind for the streets of dublin for next year ... at least we know 2010 will eventually bring longer evenings ... I like night shooting (handheld @ 12,500 ISO) but sometimes the push development gives mixed results ... sometimes sweet

hot off the press ( scanner)

It's not a pose. I had walked past the dude a couple of hours earlier. On my way out from town he was still there but there was a couple of people making a fuss over him. They were the ones with the trolley and were giving the sandwiches out. The girl was quite hysterical and asked myself and my friend to call an ambulance. I said I thought it was a waste of resources and he was probably just drunk and needed to sleep it off. She argued with me. I found her quite annoying, she or her friend didn't have mobile phones and she had a rather posh English accent. About 20 or 21 years old. So I tried to wake the guy, which didn't work. He was way too drunk. He still had a hospital tag on his wrist from his last visit. I called an ambulance after her insistance and explained everything to them. Then I left them to it. I find it funny how automatically think it was staged.

This is the aspect of street photography that raises so many issues. Like the war photographer who takes photos and is sometimes seen to be too detached from events, the street photographer has a lot to think about when photographing vulnerable people.

I'm glad that people stopped to see if the man was alright.

Here are some links to a variety of names:

Also, Paul Strand is represented at the Imma exhibition

Often if someone is really messed up I'll stop to see if they are alright. But I hate to see drunks wasting the money, time and energy of the health care system. The girl who was freaking out, the one with the trolley, just seemed too naive about the world.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,826 ✭✭✭Anouilh

I meant that you were included among the people who showed concern. Dublin is still a very caring city and people do stop to see if a person may need help.

Young people tend to be very worried when they see a person in a dead faint, though perhaps not always.

Certainly your photo has set us thinking.

I would be very concerned about street photography late at night and this is also worth thinking about. Photographers have been assaulted, even in places that are very safe during the day.
