Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Its quite likely a virus. If you don't already have a good anti virus installed i'd advise you to get one now. Avast is a good one and its free. Its very easy to get viruses off limewire even if you think you know how to spot the fakes.

Also if its infected you should uninstall it. Re-install it if you want but i'd say your asking for trouble.

Limewire is a horrible program. I always found loads of files were not what you expected them to be, and the network is full id viruses

Ares: http://aresgalaxy.sourceforge.net/ - does exactly the same thing but its way better. It's open source so totally free and no nasty's

No nasties ? I'd take your word on the app being clean but any P2P network is going to be rife with nasties .

People still use Limewire? Why? Is it still 2001?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 206 ✭✭AlmostFamous

I used Limewire for over two years. Now, I use a google mp3 search machine and anything I can't find there I get off rs.
I never got any viruses off it but there are loads on it.
I even downloaded Limewire Pro off Limeriwre (I don't think you can do that any longer though).

Limewire is ridiculous, full of Viruses and Spyware, its 2009 why are people still usong it when there are much MUCH safer ways to P2P out there?

    Madness

I've been using Ares for 5+ years and I think I may have encountered one or two viruses in my time. Limewire is full of them and is also presents you with porn no matter what you search for. It's crap. Also anyone I have every heard of getting busted for p2p - was using limewire and paid for the pro with a credit card. So don't think you;re smart cause you have pro - it's the oppasite.

Yes there us utorrent etc but I find they can be annoying and problematic - seriously Ares is really brillaint for Anything you might want to find

There was a survey a while back and something like 45% of limeware downloads were borked , either virus or were not what the claimed to be,

also if you have a program designed to download stuff, of course it will slow down your internet when you use it as it is using bandwidth

oh yeah key point here , it also UPLOADS stuff, most internet connections are ten times faster download than upload so if you are seeding:leaching 1:1 then you UPLINK will be maxed out very quickly so you won't be able to request another web page even though you have tonnes of download bandwidth left

head on over to the malware forum and give your pc and downloads a good scan, also check the upload / ratio limits on the package you do use in future

ISP's like UPC tend to throttle torrent traffic too

Do not use limewire ....ever. Try torrents, rapidshare or usenet but never ever use limewire.

If only 30% of limewire files are infected then 70% chance a download is safe
    two downloads are (70% x 70% = 49% ) so now down to 50:50
9 downloads and it's 95% probable you have something nasty on your system

if your "pro" isn't warning you about nasties on a regular basis then it's not protecting you.

read some of the common stuff here , these are only the obvious ones , there will be other more incidious stuff especially before new viruses are known

Limewire is absolutely fine to use if you're smart about it.
Only download things that have lots of seeders and the name is formed properly, i.e. title - artist - etc.
Using those two safeguards I have never gotten a virus off it.

i know how to use limewire safely and have never got a virus from it because i only download files when there are at least 10 seeders and i have 2 anti-virus programs so im sound in that department,i was thinkin my internet provider might have blocked certain ports or something because it worked prefectly beforehand,i think im gona go back to the program i was using orginally called cabos

Does limewire have any non law breaking uses? At least with torrents you can say you use it for downloading Ubuntu iso's.

Just wondering is Frostwire any better or is it just the same?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭BoB_BoT

the majority of machines I clean have some variation of limewire/frostwire/bearshare on them. All riddled with spyware and virus. Very few legal uses for such p2p programs, so make sure not to trip yourself up, also films/music/software you get from limewire (unless they're personal files/ licensed as free) will not be licensed so it would be seen as piracy.

Using limewire pro doesn't protect you from anything, it just gives you some sort of membership with extra features.

-osborne- using two antivirus can cause conflict and eat system resources, they may not even cover you for malware/spyware.

ones malware and the other is anti-virus/spyware

Quoted for truth! When I worked for a pc repair place 90% of software related problems were caused by those oh so deceptive 45kb .exe *insert generic artist/band name here* songs!

If you are going to pirate music then please don't use limewire. As much as you may think you are safe, I'll bet you 20E that out of any 10 downloads over half of them will contain obvious malware, the rest will have well placed hard to find malware ;)

    ha ha :)

Seriously using Limewire with AV and checking file sizes and types and numbers of downloads is like saying you are safe because you keep away from the dodgiest looking prostitutes and always use condoms. :D

Microsoft don't let third parties handle their updates.

Also when you check a file against the MD5 check sum , probably best to check the checksum from another site too. Yeah if using limewire please use checksums.

Don't forget that AV updates take time to pickup on new viruses so you can't be sure that a clean scan is clean. And if a rootkit gets in the AV may not see it :(

Oh god I forgot about that. Viruses and flipping Limewire.

When I was last up in Liverpool my sister said their computer couldnt go on the internet. It was absolutely riddled with all sorts of crap, (5 or 6 different toolbars at the top of Internet Exploder)and one of them had disabled the antivirus and maybe the same one or another had for some reason disabled the network port.

I used trend micro's online scan and it removed whatever one was stopping the AVG that was installed and then used AVG to clear the rest. Then ran anti spyware and anything else I could run (Hitman Pro) to do several other scans.

Then I uninstalled Limeware and gave out to my sisters 14 y.o. son.

Installed Firefox with adblock plus and noscript and installed ultravnc (not autostart) and installed comodo firewall.

Several flipping hours wasted due to flipping limewire (albeit drinking beer, watching telly and chatting)

No worries. Honestly I've been using it successfully for about 5 years and apart from the people I have told about it, I don't know anyone else that uses it - I don't understand as it is brilliant. Searches multiple networks and finds rare stuff you'd never imagine to find on a network like this. Also handles bittorrent links which is handy
