J1 Eligibility Question

I'm thinking of making a very last minute call and doing a j1, but have a little bit of a problem.

If I'm reading documentation right, you need to be registered as a full-time student in the semester before you apply.

I'm a student doing a full-time degree, but have taken a leave of absence to work for the last college year. I will be returning to college in September to finish the degree. Does that mean I'm not eligible at all?

If so, are there any loopholes in the rule?
