I remember there was something where subscribers voted for downloads and the top ones were broadcast so everyone could download them instead of eating into each individual cap. Obviously you would need to leave the PC on as it would happen overnight. It was on Astra or Hotbird ?

    Does this still happen ?
Do you need to be a subscriber ?

I was looking for a way to pick up new distros and stuff

I remember EuropeOnline did this way back, with a 3rd party piece of software. Ah good times! :)

I don't think it still happens though? Usually chargeable per MB/GB afaik nowadays

    Also Casablanca

Experimental service now closed. Sort of teletext by Satellite with video, downloads, podcasts, newsgroups and web content to the disk cache.

Most VSAT (two way Internet on Satellite) uses ordinary DVB-s or DVB-s2 for downlink

Filegraber is nowadays a Progdvb plugin , I have not used it thusly . You will find feck all on the Astra2 cluster lads but some birds have lots of midband services broadcast in the clear . Prodvb has lists of sat services and is up to date .

Optimal leeching depends on knowing what you are looking for , string searching in the stream for .iso and fullfile will get you a lot of large files like service packs etc
