Shuffling machines have all but killed the card counter but if you play in a club with manual shoes and want to count , dont be greedy and you should be ok .

Correct me if I'm wrong but how the deck(s) are shuffled has nothing to do with card counting as a system to win.

What if any "legal" punishments can be enforced?

As Irish law at the moment doesnt know its ear from its arsehole with card clubs what legal steps can a club here take if someone is caught counting in a casino using a device (such as the "a blackjack counter" on the iphone)

"legally" speaking blackjack is illegal in Ireland but if carried on in a "private members club" it falls into a grey area whereas long as it doesn't rock the boat it will be left alone........ hardly likely to be covered under any of the current legislation in this country now is it, or for that matter any operator is unlikely to be going to the courts....

Slightly off topic but along a similiar legal mindset, what would people think the possiblelegal ramifications of having the following "Responsible Gambling" policy implemented in a casino

    Responsible Gaming

Gambling should be a fun and enjoyable experience. XYZ Casino Ltd* do recognise that for a small minority of people that gambling can become a problem. Within our casinos, we are committed to providing a safe and controlled environment to support those individuals who demonstrate they are unable to control their gambling.

Our information on our responsible approach to gambling can be downloaded using the link at the bottom of this page.

We recognise that some of our customers who are no longer able to enjoy gambling, may wish to restrict their gambling. XYZ Casino Ltd* provides a self-exclusion facility, which allows customers to suspend their membership for a minimum of six months.

A self exclusion form can also be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

We support the work of Gamcare who offer support to those people who are concerned about gambling.

If you need advice, call the GamCare Helpline on 0845 6000 133 or visit www.gamcare.org.uk or www.gambleaware.ie

    RESPONSIBLE APPROACH TO GAMBLING GUIDE

    SELF-EXCLUSION FORM

If this is your policy and you can be shown to have acted knowingly against this policy could you be culpable for the recovery of any monies lost in this manner. Without going into any specifics if you were opening at odd times to service a client who was losing vast amounts of money that you knew he didn't have ( not wealthy, but in a position where he could get his hands on other peoples money ) and did nothing to stop him and in fact to use the Americans favourite enabled him to gamble in direct contradiction to your stated policy could you be held (maybe partly) responsible in court for the recovery of such monies or even criminally negligible if the client ended up in court on a theft / embezzlement charge.

This is purely hypothetical so I would appreciate if there was no innuendo put forward as to any real life casinos / people

The machines are constantly shuffling Dave and the muck is added to this constant shuffle. Impossible to track.

If that was the case of course you are right. I was thinking of the 5/6 decks being shuffled by machine at end of each shoe.

Trying to remember if I've ever played in a casino where they used a shuffling machine on the blackjack table, not that I'd be counting like your good self.............. too old for that crack

Although with shuffling machines a count can not be achieved it is still possible to Track cards provided you have the correct Algorithm used , the quality of the hardware in older machines was very predictable .
This is a formula for online RNG 's which can easily translate to 4 , 6 or eight decks in blackjack http://www.cigital.com/papers/download/developer_gambling.php

To count cards you must know how many cards and their value , have left the shoe and how many remain . This gives you the advantage of increasing or decreasing your bet depending if count is high or low , this is done by assigning each card a + or - value instead of remembering each card.
Tracking requires you to remember blocks of cards that are in your favour , if you know that each block is shuffeled in exactly the same way then you now know what cards are coming .
This system can also be used with a dealer dealt shuffle and can be more proffitable than counting
