Im off to a family wedding in August. Unfortunately all of my family and friends are going too, so i'm going to have to put my two monsters in kennels for a week. I have never done this before and would welcome recommendations. I live in Dublin but will travel and pay for quality (or the peace of mind that i associate with quality).

They will be fine! Some kennels do family kennels so the two of them can be in together.
Send in something belonging to yourself (with your smell on it) - an old t-shirt or something.
Also send in their own food so its not a total new experience on all fronts.

It might also be an idea to send them in for a night or two in the meantime so at least they know they people/place/sounds/smells etc.

Cant help with any recommendations though.

Happy Hounds is excellent - its in Meath but not too far a drive depending on where you are in Dublin.

We also sent our fella to Wenden Kennels in rathfarnham. its more expensive and it is very cold (in winter) but i think its OK too.

Also, get your dogs the kennel cough vaccine - its given up their nose.
You have to get it in advance (I think thats because it is a live virus). I can't remember what the time lapse was before you could bring them to kennels after they get it.

Bookerboy: I pay £8.50 per dog per night. Includes food, though I send in their own. Its an extra £6 if you pick them up after 2pm on the day of collection.

I send my monster to the canine country club in salins (kildare), he seems to love it, always plenty of dogs roaming around the yard socialising.

not bad price wise 15 euro/ night. they supply food, but i think they tell you to supply it if he is under 6 months old or is it a year? can't remember.

Have used wendel as well, opp. the dspca, a little more pricey and no pick ups on a sunday, but they seem good.

Spent a number of months visiting kennels before I found one I was happy with. Do not touch Lissenhall Swords or the Canine Club in Sallins. The first keeps them in their coop for the entire period as they have no exercise area, the second was absolutely filthy and as dark as a dungeon when I visited. I have used Kilmessin Kennels in Trim and found them very good. My two dogs are very much house pets and they have always returned from there in good form and not at all out of sorts which gives a good indication that htey have been well treated. Anyway, always visit the kennels first so you get a feel for the place. Good luck!

Rivendell Kennels in Meath is excellent!
Its run by genuine dog lovers and the dogs get walked and aren't just left in a kennel for the duration of their stay! :) Also they are really flexible about when you bring and collect your dog unlike alot of places!
    This is their website:

I second that, i left my dog with these on numerous occasions, they are soo good, kennels are immaculate, dog came back nearly fitter to me than when he went to them, very good for excercising your dogs :D

They located just outside kilmeaden as far as i remember

Blackberry Kennels in Newbridge are good. http://www.blackberrykennels.ie/

Although i think he only has the gates open during certain times of the day for dropping off/picking up.

I think it's equally important to name and shame bad kennels as to promote good ones.
A boards member called Prionsais had a horiffic experience last week and posted his story.
The whole thread has now been deleted or moved???
    Why??

I can understand possibly removing the name, but leaving the general area it was in, but more animals are at risk of being treated in the same way if people are not told.

We always leave our 2 into Jerasulem Kennels in Carlow. They love it there. As soon as we pull into their driveway the dogs go mad with excitement.
The people who run it are brilliant. They were able to pick up on certain personality traits of the dogs so I knew that they actually spent time with them.
It really makes going on holidays better when you know that they are going to have fun and be well taken care of.

Have had no dealings with Lissenhall in the kennelling sense but I have to strongly disagree with the Canine Country Club being either filthy or dark as a dungeon. I brought my dogs from Greystones to Sallins in order for them to stay there, they are that good. I've been there countless times & I've never, ever seen filth, quite the opposite. The staff are lovely too.
Anyway, have a look for yourself http://www.caninecountryclub.ie They are also a member of IBKCA.
My mum uses Blackberry Kennels in Newbridge & thinks they are the bees knees. Happyhounds in Meath is also meant to be fantastic.

We brought our dog (a 3 year old Rottie) to stay at the Canine Country Club. The staff were lovely, our lad seemed very happy and was the picture of health when we came to collect him. The staff really seem to know their stuff and were perfectly happy to give me regular updates about our dogs welfare.

We'll be going back again. As a previous poster stated the dog will let you know how satisfied he/she is with the kennel.:D

I've used that place before and while they have a great place, they don't superise the dogs at all times, even during mixed playtime

My dog came back with a back injury after being there a few days and they didn't notice it. Fortunately he recovered quickly. While the vet said that the nature of his injury was likely to be from playing, I was pissed of that at a minimum that staff didn't notice it

When I contacted them about it they said they don't supervise the dogs all day.

While Blackberry Kennels is slightly more expensive, Peter and his team do an excellent job and seem to get the know the dogs better
