Rumours abound, but they finally settled down on something IIR around February. They're not replacing it AFAIK, they're building a 'Food Court' instead.

Somewhere along the grapevine I heard that they're planning on building a temporary canteen at the back of the arts block but there doesn't seem to be much space so I dunno how true that is.

When it's built will students still be allowed to go in to Pugin Hall? Love that place.

Oh, there's also the common room they're building beside JH.

Having great flashes of the American style food courts with KFC, McDonalds, Chinese and all sorts of things.

It's there already, the woman with the drinks fridge and two tables of food :p

I actually emailed Durka about this for my Subway thing. He said its probably just going to be replaced with what was there before with some changes to the layout.

High prices and **** service with all the previous canteen staff out of jobs. No thanks.

    And **** food, don't forget **** food.

Never mind the commercialisation of the college which is something we should be backing away from in recessionary times not embracing.

College should sell sushi. That'd be awesome.

The college should directly employ a staff for a full-time student canteen, because the 'rent-a-crowd' system can sadly sometimes end up like we seen last time around.

I remember hearing people give out that the food was dear because "it was costing a fortune" in terms of the wages of the workers over in the canteen. Don't believe a word of that to be honest, the food was never cheap fair enough but was that directed to the workers? I doubt it.

Still, O' Briens is proof the food doesn't get any cheaper when you outsource it.

Exactly. **** holes like the two places in JH have no competition and can therefore charge what they like. 4.50 for a package sambo in the shop in JH. The place is a smelly, dirty kip

It actually disgusts me the amount of food all over the place in the glass case in O'Briens. I've never seen it clean...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭LeixlipRed

The state of the seating area in that place as well. It's disgusting.

Yer, was sitting up there this morning before the exam for quietness and the smell was horrible. They need to sort the place out big time, I'd worry about the standards in the parts of it we can't see!

I know it's supposed to be self clean but so was the canteen and that was never anything like O'Briens. There's never anyone wiping down tables when they could really do with a bit of a clean...

For what they charge for a sandwich they can afford to spruce the place up a bit. Make it some what hygienic.

To be fair, self-clean or not, the way the canteen and O'Briens are/were treated by the students is inexcusable. I know those bins fill up fast but even when they're empty the place is always left in a terrible state. Only time it's worse is during the summer when the Italian students show up so they can throw muffin bits at each other.

    What? We weren't allowed before?!

    Wait, I'm getting Deja Vu...

Pugin is only for postgrads and staff.

Woops. I've been going there since I was in first year...

Ooo the food was actually nice in there?

Always thought that building was a odd bit scary

No the food was gross. We're now talking about the other canteen. With good food. And more pews

I might be heading to maynooth in november...this thread is very depressing!
They should get starbucks. Everyone going to DCU are bragging about Starbucks..
It's gone from fighting over better courses to fighting over better food..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 912 ✭✭✭Norrdeth

Starbucks is lame. The only time I was there it was waay to expensive and there were hardly any seats!
And what's wrong with having a coffee in O'Briens if you want to splash out?
Grrr MNCs make me furious
Even though O'Briens is one O.o
    hehe :p

I must say I did enjoy the pizza corner whilst at DCU. Proper good pizza and quick self-service breakfast. And make your own toast :)

And the staff canteen was proper closed off with big leather seats (I think they were leather), which made me feel special.

  • Registered Users Posts: 108 ✭✭internetaddict

MNCs anger me too.. I'm such a hypocrite.I mean I am disgusted at myself for not being able to resist the temptation of a frappucino I really am :((so is my purse).

Maybe it'll help me kick the habit.
