    “Hey you on the Mobile”

Luas drivers today launched a safety message entitled “Hey You on the mobile phone” asking pedestrians and cyclists to stay off their mobile and take out their headphones from their ears and listen for the chimes of the Luas instead.

People in Dublin are familiar with the Luas and many pedestrians and cyclists are relaxed around it however Veolia Transport the operator of the Luas is calling on people to be more alert.

To date many of the incidents involving the Luas and pedestrians are as a result of people on their mobile phones or wearing headphones and being distracted.

Often pedestrians in the city centre are unable to hear the warning horn of the tram as their mobile phone is distracting them. Our appeal and campaign is to ask people to stay alert at all times around the Luas.

Safety is our No.1 priority, we have a good track record and we want to keep it that way.

Many people are deaf, so could not hear the horn. But the LUAS is a big silver thing, you can see it, if you turn your head, which requires engaging your brain.

So don't talk on your phone or listen to your music outside either. Fantastic.

A simple bit of cop on is lacking here from (most of) those getting hit by the bloody big trains of the road... these same people will get hit regardless of whether they're on the phone or not.

I think this campaign should be redesigned for use on Dublin Bus:

    "Hey! You on the Mobile!.....Shaddup!"

    :D

If they just put better windscreen wipers on the front of the Luas and weren't so brake-happy, the problem would solve itself eventually...
