3,300 photos already uploaded at Volvo Ocean Race Festival

Six days to go to break Irish record

The Western Development Commission (WDC) in association with photo website Pix.ie has launched a photo competition to highlight the 'Creative West' as the Western Region rapidly becomes Ireland’s hub for the creative industries with over 11,000 jobs in the sector according to a recent WDC survey.

Joanne Grehan, Regional Development Executive of the WDC, said, “This weekend we are expecting over 150,000 people to come to Galway to take part in the Galway Volvo Ocean Race Festival – a record for a tourism event in Ireland. However, we are also trying to break another record, by asking visitors to upload their photos from the event onto the Pix.ie website. At the moment we have over 3,300 images uploaded and we now have another six days to get a further 7,000 onto the website, a process that is ridiculously easy. If we can reach the 10,000 mark Pix.ie tell us that we will create an Irish record, which would be a bit of fun as well as showcasing the fun and craic of the VOR to those, right around the world, who can’t be with us here.

“We’re using this competition to highlight what we call the Creative West, to showcase all the creative industries that are now clustered in the Western Region, making the region Ireland’s creative hub. Our recently published report, “Creative West: The Creative Sector in the Western Region”, showed the Western Region has the potential to create at least an extra 2,000 jobs in the creative sector, which is particularly valuable in these tough economic times.

"The WDC is taking every opportunity to promote the Western Region as a great place to live, work and do business during what will be the largest gathering of people in the region during the entire year. Our highly successful LookWest.ie campaign has identified a very significant number of highly skilled individuals who would love the opportunity to move west,” Ms Grehan added.

The photo competition is open to all. Participants are asked to simply upload their photos, taken during the Galway Volvo Ocean Race Festival to the 6th of June, onto http://pix.ie/go/lookwest. The winners will be chosen by marine sports journalist and photographer David Branigan. Prizes include top of the range digital cameras to a total value of €1,500.

I been in the race village for the past three nights.
    I need a week off.
Pity I have to go back to work tomorrow.
Galway will never see a week-end like this again.

Id say it will be great on thur & Fri nite for Aslan & the stunning.

Jeez, some fantastic shots here guys. Check flickr for more by other people, some great shots of the Red Arrows in particular.
Here's my humble contribution, some shots from Friday... haze was a bit of a problem but luckily had the polarizing filters with me... probably the best day wind-wise too, the weekend was a good bit calmer.

You can click on the pics to see them in larger size on flickr...

Those early morning ones are brilliant!

This (and Foxy's tanks removal) have been the best threads on the Galway Forum IMO, I've really enjoyed them. Fair play to all that posted!

Some fantastic shots of Galway in general, has been an excellent stopover for the volvo race.

I've a gallery of mine from the in-port race here

I was miles away from the arrows and I only had the wide lens on..:(

Tilt shift looks good. I'd make the transition much more gradual though and the vertical one doesn't look right or makes sense.

    Ah all the tiny people.
