Ok, so my 21st is coming up and I've decided to request a weather station as a present from my relatives (all together). I want a halfway decent one. Can anyone recommend any? I wouldn't mind having one that also has/can have a webcam attached to it but that's not a critical feature for me. Sturdy and accurate and cat resistant :p

Davis Vantage Pro II is the best one you can get. They're on the pricey side though. Very accurate but you'd be talking around €1,000 or so. There are some good ones around the €250-300 mark. Have a look here... http://www.ukweathershop.co.uk/acatalog/weather_stations.html?gclid=CJTTgom8z5oCFUIM3godFARH4A

so what would the big differences between say http://www.ukweathershop.co.uk/acatalog/info_1_OS_WMR80.html and http://www.ukweathershop.co.uk/acatalog/info_1_IR_ProX2.html be as an example?

Is there anything in particular I should be looking for?

Go with the Vantage Pro II, the version that has a 24hr FARS comes highly recommended. The unit should come in around the €700 to €800 range. A webcam would be a totally seperate unit that can be picked up in any good PC shop. Have a look through eBay, I have seen good prices on there (last year anyways). Do you have a spare PC that could run 24 hours a day? If so, it would be great to see continious data from you live on the internet.

what is the advantage of FARS?

I live in a big sailing area so ultimately I would like to have a webcam aimed at some trees to guage visually what it looks like on live feed... but this would of course be AFTER I get to grips with the station and get myself sorted with a website...

FARS is a Fan Assisted Radiation Shield. This little feature is responsible for maintaining a smooth airflow through the temperature sensor unit.
Picture this... on a very cold calm clear night, the air inside the temperature sensor might register -4.3c, but the air outside could be closer to -4.8c. So all in all it improves the accuracy of temperature recordings.
