Hi I'm new around here. I'm gay, in the closest (i hate that term) although I have told a few friends. I go to IADT. Interested to know is there anybody else who goes to IADT, whose gay and if there is anybody like me, "in the closet". Kind of hesitant about joining the LGBT because I'm not that good at new things. I have a friend who is joined but he doesn't want to tell me anything about it ...some friend :( I suppose he's still a little shy about being gay or something like that so doesn't want to talk about it even though I told him I'm gay but would like to start talking to somebody on similar turf who is gay just to move forward step by step. Thank you :)

You're not in the closest if you told someone. There's no need to tell the world. You'll start to realise this as you come out to more people. I don't go to IADT, but surely you have some ability to handle new things, after all college is/was a new thing for you? Afaik its a fairly new and small society, the members I've met are grand and I think they do some joint events with trinity LGBT.

Isn't IADT the gayest college in Ireland (as in, it has more gay people than any other college)? Pretty convenient for you if this is the case :p

I don't go to IADT, but I would adivise you not to shy away from joining the LGBT. They're generally less cliquey than other societies, and are very empathetic towards people who are new/shy/confused. You may have formed an impression of the types of people who join the LGBT (some think they are all promiscuous), but there is actually quite a diverse range of people there - and since IADT allegedly has such a large gay community, you're even more likely to meet like-minded people.

Your friend wont tell you anything about the LGBT? How odd! I don't know why someone would be so secretive about something like that... You should try to open up to him about your confusion and how important it is to you to meet like-minded people. Anyway, you can find out information about the LGBT by asking them directly :)

Hey Boston, I suppose that does mean I'm no longer in the closet :) but really it was only because they asked, I didn't really say it and I'm not comfortable with it yet either but hope to be.

monellia, IADT may be a "gay college" but I have come across more homophobes so far than homosexuals :(

Door - you're gay, and in Art College? I would have thought that being gay would be a cool thing and an asset in somewhere like art college.

Art colleges are famously liberal and tolerant. Indeed, there were students at IADT - your college - out and proud 30 years ago!

So feck the homophobes and come out. You'll be much better for it, believe me!:)

Yup, you'll find plenty of acceptance amongst the art students. Don't know what its like in the technology and business parts of the campus, tho.

With the college split into two sections there is quite a division. I'm not part of the obviously more accepting art section.

Doesn't mean you can't socialise with them. Head to their exhibitions and get talking to them about their work. If you can survive the first few minutes of conversation, you'll be grand.

Hey I'm also gay and in IADT, I only came out to my college mates a few months ago but they were really accepting. I don't think the fact that they're in the creative arts had much to do with it. Anyone else I've told outside of college hasn't reacted any differently.

As for joining the LGBT, at first I was like "naw" but **** it, I'm out now and have nothing to be ashamed of so I might as well. I'm going to do it when college starts again in September. Nothing to hide anymore and I seriously doubt it will do any harm.

hey i went to iadt, you literally have nothing to worry about, seriously more than 50% of the students there are openly gay, no one batts an eyelid at homosexuality in the college. even in bakers theres a student night on thursdays and its a sexual free for all. i'll actually give you €50 if anyone makes any comment about you being gay. thats how laid back the college and students and staff are. the lgbt is good but if you're not comfortable being a big flamer i wouldnt jump right into it. just take it cheesy and you'll find that theres nothing to worry about.

    chin up:)
