Embattled former President Roh Moo-hyun — a reformist shamed by a corruption scandal that tarnished his image as a "clean" politician — jumped to his death while hiking in the mountains behind his rural home in South Korea, his lawyer said. He was 62.

Roh was hiking in Bongha village when he threw himself off a steep cliff around 6:40 a.m. Saturday, lawyer Moon Jae-in told reporters in the southern city of Busan. He said Roh left a suicide note.

"Too many people are suffering because of me," he wrote, according to South Korean media.

Roh was taken to Busan National University Hospital, where he was declared dead several hours later.

A self-taught lawyer who lifted himself out of poverty to reach the nation's highest office, Roh prided himself on his clean record in a country with a long history of corruption. He served as president from 2003 to 2008.

But he and his family have been ensnared in recent weeks in a burgeoning bribery scandal.

My God the gulf in thinking between this kinda man and Bertie Ahern is staggering! Remember Bertie Ahern was the one who said the "doommongers should go and kill themselves"

South Korea has a strange love affair with suicide, it seems to tie in with the whole "saving face" thing. The country has the highest suicide rate among the countries in the OECD.

This guy was a great man here. This is what actually happened.

His wife took some cash from one of his friends. Right or wrong ? meh. AFAIK there was no dodgy 'business' activity involved. It seemed to be a genuine gift for a favour that either wasn't expected or hadn't been called in during his presidency.

Certainly nowhere near what our scum get up to.

Started bringing in anti-corruption changes, first female something-or-other (law position ...) which pissed off the male establishment in a very confucianist culture. Had a friendly relationship with North Korea and had being bringing the danger levels down since he took officer (following on from his predecessor).

Very popular with the younger voters.

I was in the city centre during the weekend and there were more cops there on Sunday then all the guards, soldiers and prisoner officers in Ireland put togeather.

Basically here is what we can learn from this.

No other people in the world would accept the clowns we have in Leinster house, but its not their fault, its our fault. Irish people LIKE having these filthy corrupt gangsters for politicians. Theres no other explanation for it.

Oh and btw, I mean the lot of them. FF, FG, etc.

FF are just rotten to the core.
