ship parts...

    Hi there,

I don't know the first thing about sailing or boats in general and was hoping someone could help understand what the different parts of a ship are, especially the parts named below... keelson, a half deck fore, an aft, etc? I pretty much want to understand the difference between the warship and cargo ship named below in easier terms...

"While the warship has a low-lying deck from stem to stern, oar holes all along the side of the ship, and a mast which can easily be lowered , the cargo ship has a half-deck fore and a aft, a mast fitted deep in the step of the keelson, and an open hold about 4m long midships."

It's unfortunatly to do with an assignment so I'd really appreciate any help given.

also whats an amidship? I noticed that it's used for measuring and the likes..:p

    thanks

keelson- a longitudinal beam connected to the keel of ship to strengthen it

half deck fore - a deck reaching half the length of the forward part of a ship

half deck aft - a deck reaching half the length of the rear part of a ship

aft - stern; back end of ship

mast - a tall, vertical, or near vertical post (spar) which supports the sails

hold -the lower part of the interior of a ship's hull for cargo

midships -a point about halfway between the bow and stern and the sides of the ship

For differences between warships and cargo ships, see these links for details:
