Well for quite some time we have known the Fianna Fail led government helped out by their current whipping boys (and girls) - the yellows (ooops greens) - were on the slippery slope but finally the Wexford Camels back has been broken witht he final straw of news today that by the end of the year, the government want to close 24 hour A&E service in Wexford General Hospital.

The truth of the much rumoured downgrading of Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny & Clonmel Hospitals was finally given substance today by the Irish Independant - read the article at: http://www.independent.ie/health/lat...e-1749791.html.

Please lodge your protest at this shambolic attempt by the government to save the HSE circus they have created over the last few years - (only in Ireland would we have a body responsible for Health Services that the Minister for Health in turn not responsible for) by signing the petition to stop the closure of Wexfords ONLY 24 Hour A&E Serivce on http://www.brendanhowlin.ie/

    Thanks

    John Ryan

That just pisses me off hearing that news.

What kind of twats have we representing us in government all they seem to do is close things.!!!!! We have a "reactive" government as oppose to a "proactive" government.

It wouldnt surprise me if the people making these decisions to close 24hr A&E services live in the Dublin Pale and don't give a damn about anything outside Dublin. You can bet your ass they live near a 24hr A&E just in case they need it.

I had to use Wexford A&E one time at 5am in the morning and I was grateful of it's service.

Just a suggestion, maybe Mod might suggest otherwise but, I think you should rename the topic a bit and add "Government to close Wexford 24hr A&E". The Labours Petition could be just 1 of many things we could do to help keep it 24hr open.

Ah ive expected this for some time.

Internationally, its reconized as the best practice aswell, but not with the current set up down our way.

For this to work, an air ambulance would be needed to cover the south east, no sign of that (an all ireland one possibly though)

Wexford at the moment has no advanced paramedics! This is critical for these plans to work, an advanced paramedic is trained to a higher standard than an ordinary paramedic, naturally! They can give a wide range of drugs, insert iv's, tubes etc. There are 11 paramedics based in wexford general. So that would at least have to be doubled also! Theres 4 in enniscorthy and about 9 in new ross and gorey i think. So basically that means at the moment theres 3 ambulances covering co wexford at any one time. More some times, less others.

Until the government sort their act out, any plans to downgrade the hospital would be disastorus

The rate that the government are closing these A & E depts, there's be none left.
We'll be getting the 04:00AM ferry from Rosslare to Fishguard to go to a hospital. Its pathetic, and im disgusted by it.
The guys in A&E do a lot of hard work, they saved my girlfriends sister's life when she had an RTA 3 years ago. Without the 24hr A&E dept, there will be people's lives at serious risk.

Seán Connick was on radio today claiming the Christmas bonus would be restored to DSFA benefit recipients, so you're probably right, must be an election soon. Somebody should tell Mary Hanafin.

    I agree.

24 Hr A&E is a mandatory essential service for Wexford. Even if Waterford Regional Hospital is more specialised it's the golden hour of an accident happening and getting that person to be seen by a doctor that is critical. We all know that the ambulance can take it's time (for various reasons) to get to you in an emergency BUT if that one ambulance on duty at night is been used, they have to wake up and get another crew to attend your call, that is at least 10-15mins before they are mobile.

The people of Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford will and must oppose this disasterous plan vehemently.
Shoving nearly 250,000 of a catchement population (the3 coutnies alone) to an already stretched A&E in WRH.
To say I am shocked is an understatement, but it has been niggling in the back of my mind at the same. They closed the A&Es at Ennis and Nenagh (which were smaller hospitals); probably was only a matter of time before thye picked on us. And what about Dublin and its' many hospitals. Surely they should get the same "treatment".
Parts of North KK, Carlow and Wex will now be over 50 miles from the nearest A&E. This is a recipe for disaster imo. We have to oppose this so strongly. It's a step way too far.

......So......The minister of health goes on about how its critical for heart attack and stroke victims to get medical care within 1/2 to 1hr.
Vital for their survival and recovery.
TV ads telling everyone the same thing.
Proven medical journals published say this.
The chances of a person dying after having a heart attack increases dramatically the longer medical aid is delayed.

Then the Health minister and HSE come up with this GREAT IDEA
Close 24 hr A&E in Wexford when the nearest A&E is over an hour away.
They dont care, they are are in Dublin, lots of hospitals.....

Sure whats the big deal.....dont they have Waterford.....fine hospital
.......The people of Wexford will be ok
......There is no chance of them having a heart attack or stroke, or car accident, or get caught in a fire, or knocked down, break a leg in 3 places
after 18:00 and before 7:00am now is there.
.......Isnt Waterford only down the road.

You'd be dead by the time you'd get to Waterford. I just don't get this at all. Wexford getting screwed over as usual.
