I was wondering did/does anyone have BT broadband and if so what were the speeds like?

I recently purchased their 24MB broadband & talk package for €64.23 per month as I am on the Dún Laoghaire exchange but when tested the speeds they were coming in at just under 5MB download speeds.

It says on their website that people who opt for this package but are not on an exchange can expect speeds of 7.6MB (download) but I am on an exchange and I'm getting way under that!

    Any ideas?

It's all up to and it completely depends on what your line is capable of. Post up your line stats and we'll be able to help find what your line is capable of.

When i was living in DL I had the LLU product when it came out.

Was getting ~19 from the socket in my room...moved it to a diff socket in the house before I left and was getting ~22.

Looks like you could get a good bit more out of your line, maybe 8-10MB. You are getting a lot of errors, esp. HEC errors, are you using a Telephone Extension cable and have you got every device in your house filtered (including Sky, Faxes, Eircom Phonewatch)? Is your Broadband connected and your main telephone point in your house (the Eircom NTU usually in the hall)?

Yeah I noticed the amount of errors that I am getting and was wondering if it was a line or modem issue. I tried to contact BT but I'm finding it hard to get through to them so I shot off an email earlier today.

I currently have it plugged into the Eircom NTU in the hall on a splitter with my home phone, I'll try it later and see what it's like without the splitter on it.

Okay BT finally gave me a straight answer after my varies emails and phone calls and said that my line is only capable of upto 6MB even though I am on the Dún Laoghaire exchange and apparently able to access upto 24MB. I am now paying €67.23 for 4.6MB speed broadband per month. Looks like I'll be canceling and looking at some other options.

You can get up to 24MB, it's from 3MB up to 24MB... 6MB is the maximum your line can handle with any provider, your probably a good 4KM's away from your exchange.

Any DSL product would have the same limitation. Consider changing to 3Mbps, either with BT or another provider. Don't try for any more, as your line just won't do the 7Mbps that most of them offer.

Also worth considering UPC, Digiweb Metro or IBB Breeze, if they're available, and don't require a phone line.

The fact is these 24Mbps products on DSL are almost dishonest.

The speed on copper pair depends on three things:
    1) Distance. Above 800m the speed drops really fast. Less than 20% would have lines short enough for more than 20Mbps.

    2) Copper condition. Makes speed/distance worse

    3) Interference or Cross talk. THe more people on a bundle of cables the slower it can go.

It only an up to 24Mbps subject to line tests. Attenuation is not the whole story (basically related to distance as 2 & 3 show.).
