My mum is considering getting a husky and boxer mix puppy off a neighbour, She has always kept dogs, and already has two medium dogs (one is an older dog and on its last legs) But she has never had a dog which could grow so big.

I am married and am pregnant but the idea of such a big dog really worries me. I love dogs and i keep two myself. I guess my question would be does anyone have that sort of mixed dog? Is there much difference in looking after that big a dog (other then the food bill of course)?

I know that boxers can be fairly big, but huskies are only medium sized, most people do seem to think that they are big dogs, but they aren't. Most of mine are kind of labrador size, with a couple that are from show lines being smaller than that. I'd love to see what they look like though, an interesting cross:D

I'd say that exercise would be the issue, not the size of the dog, both breeds are quite active and with a bouncy boxer mixed in with an enthusiastic husky, I'd say they would need a lot of exercise each day.

I guess you're concerned about the dog around your child when its born. Both breeds as good with children, as long as they're socialised properly. Siberian huskies were bred to pull sleds during the day and sleep with the children of the tribe at night to act as hot water bottles, so any that were aggressive were culled and you get the friendly, people loving dog that most huskies are now. As I say, it also depends on the socialisation of them when they are pups.

My parents have a boxer and it accidentally (??) got crossed with a norwegian elk hound. The resulting litter were quiet large dogs, a little above the size of a labrador, without the bulky frame of the boxer.

The neighbour got homes for all of the litter but one. It hasnt the smarts of the boxer and is quite hard to handle (now this could be due to the neighbours lacsidasical attitude), but it does seem to be a rather energetic dog.

that sounds like an absolutely gorgeous mix.

Should be an interesting looking dog.

Both of them have good natures and are good with children.

Definitely want to see pics if she goes ahead with that - have a lab boxer cross myself and she's a very affectionate dog with a nice energy level - but thick as a brick in comparison to the full boxer - not sure how that came to pass :D

    Hi Storm

Just with my little bit of knowledge on both of these breeds:

    - Both can be very energetic dogs

    - Do not cope well being left alone for long periods of time

    - Can be very destructive

In saying that, both breeds are known for their gentle temperment.
The pup would need alot of human contact and lots and lots of activities to keep it amused and to burn off its energy.

Hope it works out for her if she does decide to take the pup and i would also like to wish her the best of luck with keeping up with it.

A neighbour of my parents were recently given an Elk hound puppy as a present from their grown-up son....
It was the worst present the son could have gottten them - this neighbour prides themselves on their perfectly trimmed and weeded garden.
Also they enjoy being out relaxing in their garden and also have grand kids at the house, and the dog has completly changed their routine.
The pup have dug up majority of their garden, is constantly digging holes, keeps knocking the grand kids down, jumps up on everyone, takes off through fields when he hears kids playing in local houses or down the road.

Just make sure she is able to offer the time needed by this dog.

    All the best!

Can we have a picture ? please.

Apparently Elkhounds are like that. Hard to handle.

    Hi,

Thank you so much for the replys, still sort of trying to talk her out of it but i think it may be a done deal (she has been looking for a dog for some time and she got the last dog off dogs in distress). She is really an ideal owner, plently of time and enough space but she had never had a larger dog so i was a bit worried.

No pictures yet (puppies are not born as such but should be coming into the world soon).
