    June forecast contest
    _____________________

This month, as usual we have the three main questions worth 80% of the points, and two bonus questions where you can score 10% more.

    (1) Mean temp in C for the month, based on average of highest and lowest monthly averages reported by Met E.

    (2) Highest temp in C anywhere in Ireland in June (met.ie)

    (3) Lowest temp in C anywhere in Ireland in June (met.ie)

    (4) First bonus question, will it be a sunny month? Give your estimate of the percentage of sunshine (average) for all reporting stations. Sample answer, 108% of average.

    (5) Second bonus question, will it be a wet month? Give your estimate of the percentage of normal rainfall at all reporting stations (the average for Ireland, in other words). Sample answer, 110%.

Just to cover some business in advance, I may not be able to post the August questions in a timely manner, so they may appear well in advance like around the middle of July ... holidays for me, with any luck. This may work out well for others taking holidays at the same time.

Looks like the annual race is heating up, some of the guys at the back of the pack are set to move up a bit after May.

Well, here's my collection of guesses.

    14.1 C

    28.8 C

    1.4 C

    101% sunshine

115% rainfall (I think a lot of that will be in the last third)

and mark this date down for severe weather -- 23 June -- it's not even a weekend !!!

As indicated, people have all day Monday to enter, or revise if they wish, editing allowed to 2359h ... just in case you see it heading for 31 C or something similar ... and you're welcome Danno and others, I regret the loss of some of the long-time participants to circumstances that I probably understand less than anyone else concerned, and hope one day all will be resolved.

But you can't complain about the weather, can you now?

I may not get around to scoring these for a while, but here are the actual results for June according to the met.ie Monthly Weather Summary.

Mean temp (average of highest and lowest) 14.6 C

highest of month 27.5 C (2nd, Birr and Claremorris)

lowest of month 3.4 C (Birr)

sunshine was much above normal almost everywhere, the average for eight stations was 147% (and considering that the lowest two were Dublin and Casement which are close together, it was probably more like 150%)

rainfall was variable around normal, with a trend of dry in the west to wet in the east. A lot of the rain fell on the 6th. The average for 12 stations was 103% of normal with quite a scatter.
