Hippies are just naive, often hypocritical, bastards. What I wouldn't have gived to have been able to crack the skulls of a few of the crusty cnunts at that protest in London a while ago....arghhh. After having enjoyed the benefits of growing up and obtaining an education in a capatalistic society they condemn it, despite the fact that living in a capatilistic society affords them the very right to protest that they are taking advantage of

They dont want free trade despite the fact that it has been proven to increase the wealth of nations that engage in it.

They admire socialist, even communist, ideolgies, despite the fact that countries like North Korea and Russia are among the most unhappy places on earth.

They think they are more moral people than you or I, because we have the cop-on to know that life isn't meant to be a communal experience of happiness.

Well, I'm still not in favour of socialism but I suppose people in lightly socialist countires arn't extremely unhappy.

In other news, all northside dublin people are scum and all women are whores.
More sweeping and horrible generalisations as we get them.

That says it all! It's a conspiracy or it's the stuff you put in those thick roll ups some hippies or its the fact that you think your better than everyone else and that "the people" are bad for being people when in fact hippies can be real snot bags sometimes.

Stop creating a straw man. Obviously all northside people arn't scum and obviously all women arn't whores; far from it in fact. But people who hold sterotypical hippy beliefs always hang around with and associate with other people who hold similar beliefs. Also, people only "become hippies" because they agree with the general set of hippy beliefs.

Actually, it's a reducto ad absurdum. The point being to highlight the inanity of your original assessment by taking it to a silly extreme.

I also like how your defense is "no, that's silly, those are horrible, inaccurate sterotypes, MY sterotype on the other hand...."

Thanks, I think it makes sense also. And what's more, I only had to use common sense to think it up.

Galway used be popular with the hippy set. If theres none there, they must be gone with the Leprachauns....

Galway is over run with them! I was trying to figure out how many people were unemployed in Galway City yesterday when the figures for the register said 11,900. Between dole seekers, students, single mothers and others on benefits I reckon we're not too far away from half the people in this city being unemployed. Granted that doesn't make everyone of them Hippies bad theres some potential there.

My reasoning for nearly half being 11,900 + around 15,000 students + ???? (single mothers and other people on benefits that differ to the dole) and the population of the city being around 70,000. Juggler numbers are on the rise...if we don't stop them soon they won't just be down in the Spanish Arch and Eyre Square they'll be in our gardens!

Don't panic. That gardening show on RTE had a few tips for dealing with them. Put a picture of Archbishop McQuaid in your window, and a sign saying "Jobs Available-Apply with in" on the gate and they'll come nowhere near ye.

We shouldn't be harsh though...hippy numbers are down since the "Nigerian" has become the scape-goat of choice.....

Galway seems to have the majority of the Veganites, not to mention a fair bit of Pagan sh/te going on too.

Seems plenty of people are mixing up left-wing politics with hippy sh/te in this thread too. How does a thread on hippies become a debate on socialism for example? Can you find any similiarities between genuine socialists and hippies? I think you'll find we've very little time for them ;) Camping in a tree for a month only takes away from real struggles and political issues.

    *facepalm*

Give Orwells Homage To Catalonia a read, for an idea of what socialism looked like ;) Lenin and Stalins paradise was state-capitalism, and indeed state-capitalism with very, very ugly repression. To hell with the two of them.

Yeah, Orwell was unabashedly socialist (as in, social justice and equality), he had no time for communism though - and indeed expressed his disgust at it with Nineteen Eighty Four.

I'm still not sure what "hippy" means. Does it apply to people who are reminiscent of the "flower children" one would associate with the counter-culture of the late 1960s/early 1970s, "crusties", leftie students, or those who have a job but embrace the same views as the former?

I'd say anyone with that kind of worldview or its contemporary equivalent - regardless of whether they are employed or not.

As Patton said "Only the dead have seen the last of war"

according to the church "The poor we will always have with us".

YOU HAVE NO POWER TO AFFECT CHANGE.
yOU COULDNT HACK IT IN IREALND SO YOU MOVED TO BERLIN TO PAINT MURALS AND WORK IN A CALL CENTRE..HARDLY GOING TO HAVE THE ESTABLISHMENT QUAKING IN ITS BOOTS NOW IS IT?
    What was your plan?
"I'll change ireland by leaving it"?
    Way to go.
Just to show that hippies are innefectual, the hippy green party completely fcucked up any chance they had of making a difference and now they've been kicked to the curb(by people terrified of change no doubt).

Ouch with the capitals! Someone hit a nerve...

Anyway, the usual priliminaries (seeing as you chickened out AGAIN):
1 - What to you is a hiipy
2 - What is it I can't "hack" in Ireland?

As for the rest of it: I'm quiet happy in Berling running my own business and working in a call centre. Hardly the lifestyle of a "job-dodging hippy". What was my plan? By happier.

"Change Ireland by leaving it?" What in Heaven's name made you think I want to change Ireland? Seriously?! That's a bad guess even by your standards.

Have no idea what the HELL you are talking about re "the establishment quaking in it's boots": I don't think they care about me any more than I care about them.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

There's nothing "different" about being a hippy, its just an unwillingness to wash and a chip on your shoulder about about people with strongly held beliefs.
To true, to true, a real hippy (not a large women) would not be within a mile of a p.c for a start. It's plonkers like these upper class drop outs who give the real earth dudes a very bad image, i have found the real article work hard and live theri own life, not bitch about goverments or how bad the world is due to 'the man'.

John Lennon was an idiot. I love the music he wrote but jesus christ, he could be some moron sometimes. He was sincerely convinced that his foolish stunts were saving lives.
