I was thinking about going back to college and doing a masters in Multimedia. I have an undergraduate in Product Design/Industrial Design and have 18 months experience in a product design firm. I became interested in graphics and did a night course in Web Authoring which I really enjoyed.
I was just wondering has anyone done MSc in Multimedia in DCU or MSc in Interactive Media? What are the job prospects like? What type of people (skills) best succeed in this course? What is taught in the course? Is there a good community spirit/easy to make friends within the course or in DCU?
By the way, does anyone know the difference between MSc in Multimedia in DCU and MSc in Interactive Media?

I'm planning on doing the Multimedia course in DCU next year. Sounds really interesting from reading the site. I'd like to know as well has anybody actually done the course? & I'm guessing by the sounds of the "intereactive" course, it'd be more internet/java based? not 100% though. There's two multimedia courses in Maynooth as well, very similar to the DCU course. Communications in DCU in quite similar to the Multimedia course also.:)

I'm starting Multimedia next year too.
from what I can tell you start off with a bit of everything in first year, audio, video, imaging, web, then sociology-like modules too in relation to media, theres also a writing for media.
I think you choose optional modules as you go on and if you want to take a more a more technical direction or something more business based...
I was told that later modules can include programming languages like Java and actionscript, and you can also do 3d work as well as script writing.

Hmm, sounds good. Looking forward to doing it anyway. Gave them a ring the other day and they use all Adobe software (After efects!:D) and Protools. Cant wait, now its just a matter of the points :(

I deferred the course from last year so I'm definitely in.
You should have gone to the information day, the lecturers I talked to were really nice and gave me tons of details about the modules, software, and career prospects.

    Hiyo,

    BA Communications (DCU) 2004-07
    MSc Multimedia (DCU) 2007/08

I did the above, and mainly did the MSc to expand my knowledge base. I specialised in video production for my undergrad, so wanted to know how to use photoshop, ProTools, Flash, Web Authoring etc. On that front, I found the MSc very useful, with the proviso that you get out of it what you put in.

They do expect you to do a lot of independent learning, but that's the nature of a Master's Degree. Don't wait to be spoonfed.

Definitely worth it though, the class size is small enough for everyone to get to know each other (26 in my year), but large enough for plenty of variety in groupwork.

    *chips in 2 cents*
