How could I forget GMC feat State of Jay - "We need a politician with a mind like McGyver" from their rap promoting some candidate in the election. Seriously, I have to hand it to them for having the bottle! :D

    Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
    Hanging on in quiet desperation
    Is the English way
    The time is gone
    The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

    Pink Floyd-Time

Even though I'm Irish hearing those words brings a lump to my throat every time.:)

"I'll take a quiet life, a handshake, some carbon monoxide,
With no alarms and no surprises, no alarms and no surprises, no alarms and no surprises please"
    -No Surprises (Radiohead)

One of the few lyrics out there that fuses simplicity with complexity in an underlying message that trancends description...brilliant stuff

I'm also fond of this from The Beatles:

"I read the news today, oh boy,
About a lucky man who made the grade
And thought the news was rather sad,
    i just had to laugh
    i saw the photograph
he blew his mind out in a car
he didn't notice that the lights had changed"

Just like everyone else, there are hundreds of single lines I love. But of course, all of them left my mind as soon as I started to read this thread. But one possibillity is
    "If you're afraid to die,
you better not be afraid to live"
    Eels

    Also by Eels
"The clown with the frown drove down to the sidewalk fair
Finger on the trigger let me tell you gave us quite a scare" - Mr. E's Beautiful Blues

    Love Eels...

Yeah Eels have some decent lyrics alright.
First one's great- what's it from again?

I'm not really into lyrics but this example from Strawberry Fields Forever really does it for me:

No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low.
That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right.
That is I think it's not too bad.

What adds to it, I think, is the dramatic orchestration. Really hammers the point home imo.

Only Eels song I'm familiar with I'm guessing is "the commercial one" as it's from Shrek 2 but:

"I need some sleep, can't go on like this
I tried counting sheep, but there's one I always miss"

    Always loved that lyric.

    Another I forgot initially:

"Come down of the cross, we can use the wood"

Tom Waits - Come On Up To The House

Its the first line from Friendly Ghost, of Souljacker Disc 1.
i kinda misquoted it, its "If you're scared" not if you're afraid...Forgive me, Mr. E!

    Agreed - this song is fantastic. Another great lyric in it is;
"The world is not my home I'm just passin' through."

    There are places I'll remember
All my life though some have changed.
    Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain.
All these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall.
Some are dead and some are living,
In my life I've loved them all.

Some of you guys might find this a bit schmaltzy, but it works for me,
BON JOVI- '' With an Iron clad fist, i wake up and french kiss the morning''....

METALLICA from The Unforgiven-''Lay beside me, tell me what they've done, speak the words i want to hear, to make my demons run, the door is locked now, but its open if your true, if you can understand the me, then i can understand the you'', Legend!

Not my favourite but can't think of any right now....

In pitch dark I go walking in your landscape, broken branches trip me as I speak, just because you feel it doesn't mean it's there...

Oh and I know you said line/lyric but this song it just brilliant.....Love conquers and is unaffected by death..brilliant lyrics imo anyway

TV On the Radio - Stork & Owl

Faceless fall. From this. Life and ah.
If you can't. See the stars.
    You've probably gone too far.
    Like the voice that cried.
    On the lonesome tide.
    Like the wave was
the only love it ever saw.

    "What's this dying for"?
    Asks the Stork that soars.
    With the Owl. High above.
    Canyons mighty walls.
    Owl said "Death's a door,
    That love walks through.
    In and out. In and
    out.
Back and forth. Back and forth".

    Turn from the fear.
Of the storms that might be.
    Oh let it free.
    That caged on fire thing.
    Oh hold its hands.
    It'll feel like lightening.
    Oh in your arms safe
    from the storms.

Sky bends. The moon's dress's slung low,
    slung low.
    Dogstar taught a dance.
It goes, it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes.
    Arms out. Knees bend.
    The motion flows.
    Like the soft. Open petals.
    Of a Jessica Rose.

    So Sirius.
    So it falls apart?
    Just reveals the perfect nothing.
    Of everything you are.
    Of everything we are!

    Candle of life.
    Lights the blights and bruises.
    Oh lay it down.
    In the night.
    Let it soothe this.
    Oh hold its hands.
And we'll know what truth is.
Oh in its arms safe from the storms.

    PEDANTIC POLICE ALERT!

That's Unforgiven II, not the first. Sorry, just too much of a Metallica head to let that one slip! :D

One of my favorite verses from 2Pac, from a song called "Me Against the World". Quite relevant if you think about it!
    With all this extra stressin
The question I wonder is after death, after my last breath
When will I finally get to rest? Through this supression
they punish the people that's askin questions
And those that possess, steal from the ones without possesions
The message I stress: to make it stop study your lessons
Don't settle for less - even the genius asks questions
    Be grateful for blessings
Don't ever change, keep your essence
The power is in the people and politics we address
Always do your best, don't let the pressure make you panic
    And when you get stranded
And things don't go the way you planned it
Dreamin of riches, in a position of makin a difference
Politicians and hypocrites, they don't wanna listen
If I'm insane, it's the fame made a brother change
It wasn't nuttin like the game
It's just me against the world

It's ok, redeem yourself by agreeing that The Unforgiven III is also lyrically beautiful :D:

"How could he know this new dawn's light would change his life forever?
Set sail to see but run aground by the light of dawn and treasure"

Seriously, for anyone who's ever written off Metallica as a juvenile metal band, listen to The Unforgiven Trilogy.

    My favourite has to be...

Maybe God can be on both sides of a gun - The Fray

"kiss, while your lips are still red" Nightwish - While Your Lips are Still Red

"one night alone, is like a year without you baby, do you have a heart of stone?" Deff Leppard - When Love and Hate Collide

Way too many to choose, so I'll just pick the first that comes to mind...

"I dreamt about you last night
And I fell out of bed twice
You can pin and mount me like a butterfly
But "Take me to the haven of your bed"
Was something that you never said,
    Two lumps, please,
    You're the bee's knees,
    But so am I."

-The Smiths, 'Reel Around The Fountain'
