Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The Football Association of Ireland have confirmed that Argentina will be the opposition for the opening international game at the the Aviva Stadium.

The Republic of Ireland senior team will play the two-time World Cup winners on Wednesday, 11 August 2010 for the first international match at the new 50,000-seater stadium.
The Aviva Stadium is on schedule to open next year.

The stadium will also host the 2011 UEFA Europa Cup final and will also host all six matches of the Four Associations Tournament involving, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and the Republic the same year.

Sweet, it'd be great to have the world's greatest player playing in the first match in the new stadium

You reckon Stephen Ireland will be back for it? ;)

Is the stadium going to be known as the Aviva Stadium?

Yes. But I'll still call it Lansdowne

A 4-0 hammering will be a bad way to start life in the new stadium.

    We'd hardly beat them 4-0!

Oh, I know what you mean now.

My favourite Ireland match of recent times was when we played Argentina about 10/11 years ago, Robbie Keane v Ariel Ortega

If Aguero gets a move to a big(ger) club this Summer people will be more excited about seeing him imo.

Is Messi really guaranteed to play against an average team like Ireland?

We will see Messi, Aguero, Tevez or Lavezzi up front and we could witness Riquelme in the flesh :D

Riquelme has been my favorite player for about 5 years, but sadly he and Diego Maradona don't get along and Requilme retired from international :(

These games against world class teams are always the same. They bring two superstars, nobody performs brilliantly and the likes of Whelan look amazing. We will draw or lose 1-0 or something.

    Can't wait.

South American teams do actually care. People posting rubbish about Brazil not caring in their games against us.

Is this the image of people that don't care:
