Friday, 5 July, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS … Rather cool and unsettled but a few more pleasant intervals allowing sunshine totals to approach average at least.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with showers gradually building up over western and inland counties, eventually reaching the east coast also. Highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with some passing intervals of heavy showers, lows 7 to 10 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast, breezy and cool, with showers fairly frequent and widespread. Highs 14 to 16 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with showers and lows 6 to 9 C, highs 15 to 18 C.

    MONDAY variable cloud, showers, lows 6 to 9 C, highs 15 to 18 C.

TUESDAY rain near south coast, uncertain as to how far inland this will spread, northern and perhaps central counties could remain largely dry with some sunshine, lows near 10 C and highs 15 to 19 C.

Gradually, an improving trend will develop with higher pressure, weak disturbances around Thursday and late weekend could bring some cloud and isolated showers, but a slow warming trend seems likely.

My local weather on Thursday was mostly sunny and very warm (30 C). Hurricane Beryl has weakened a little as it approaches the Yucatan Peninsula (cat-3), will weaken considerably over land tomorrow, and forecasts are quite uncertain for its further progress in the Gulf of Mexico but some guidance suggests recovery to cat-2 or even cat-3 intensity near the south Texas coast by Tuesday of next week.

Saturday, 6 July, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... unsettled with near normal amounts of rain, rather cool at first, slowly warming to near July average temperatures later.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy, with showers gradually building over northern counties, more isolated elsewhere. Eventually, some fairly heavy showers could begin to develop in all parts of Ireland by afternoon and early evening. Moderate west to northwest winds at times especially near any well-developed shower cells, possible hail or thunder for inland north-central counties. Highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT variable cloud, showers gradually dying out, lows 7 to 9 C. Fog patches where skies begin to clear.

SUNDAY variable cloud, light winds will mean developing showers will not move very quickly so any that do form could hang around and drop 10-20 mm of rain in isolated areas -- this won't be a widespread problem but where one or two of these showers (or thunderstorms) develop, most likely inland eastern counties, local flooding could develop. Highs 15 to 17 C.

    MONDAY variable cloud, showers, lows 7 to 9 C, highs 15 to 17 C.

TUESDAY the weather system we've been tracking now appears a bit more likely to push its way across southern counties into central Ireland by afternoon; some northern counties could remain a bit drier in general until Tuesday night. Lows near 8 C and highs 14 to 16 C.

WEDNESDAY the disturbance will slowly push into the Irish Sea and eventually southern Scotland, swinging the winds around to the north and northwest over Ireland, and pulling the bands of moisture away by later afternoon, but some moderate rainfalls could develop before that phase. Lows near 12 C and highs 14 to 16 C.

From THURSDAY onward, higher pressure will gradually assert itself, and in general the weather should improve with highs closer to 20 C and eventually into the low or even mid 20s later in July. It won't be an absolute reversal of trend, the highs look somewhat weak at times and an active storm track further north could brush northern counties with weak frontal systems at times, but the south could go into a long dry interval later in July.

My local weather has gone into the all-out heat wave mode, but humidity is very low and there was a refreshing breeze at times, making the 34 C temperature feel tolerable (in the shade). A very weak front with dry thunderstorms is forming across the region overnight, we may see a bit of lightning but no drop in temperature as the ridge is slowly building up. It is a real heat dome situation further south, I don't think we're going to see 40s here like we did in 2021, but in the southwestern U.S. record highs are being set, such as 48 C at Phoenix, and a blistering 51 or 52 C in parts of southeast California (also 53 C in Death Valley).

Beryl has emerged from a day-long trek across the north Yucatan, and is considerably weakened (50 knot tropical storm at present), but is entering a very warm area of the central Gulf of Mexico and could easily regain a lot of intensity before a Texas landfall -- opinions about where range from Mexican border to east of Galveston, so basically the entire coastline, and even southwest Louisiana is not totally out of the woods yet. In late June 1957 a cat-4 hurricane long regarded as an early season outlier (Audrey) hit that area with a deadly storm surge and 200 km/hr winds. So it is possible to get a major hurricane landfall this early (Audrey hit on June 26-27, 1957). If Beryl does make an east Texas landfall, it will probably send a wave of heavy rainfall up into the Midwest and its remnants would probably emerge into the Atlantic, but if it makes a west Texas landfall, it would probably die out over Oklahoma.

Sunday, 7 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... Frequent showers, rainfall amounts generally near average but variable and tending to be heavier inland south and east. Sunshine near or a bit below normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with showers developing, some locally heavy and prolonged as there will not be a lot of motion in cells due to a slack wind field by this afternoon. Local rainfalls of 10-20 mm or more possible, some isolated thunderstorms. This will be quite "hit or miss" with greatest risk in central Leinster and east Munster. Highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT, partly cloudy to overcast, showers dying off, lows 6 to 10 C.

MONDAY partly cloudy with a few showers, isolated thunderstorms, highs near 16 C.

TUESDAY sunny intervals at first, some outbreaks of rain mostly in south at first, spreading to central counties later in day. Lows 6 to 10 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

WEDNESDAY occasional showers, lows near 11 C and highs near 17 C.

THURSDAY rain at times, clearing in west later in day, lows near 8 C and highs near 16 C. A now scaled-down dry interval will likely follow.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY could be mostly sunny with highs closer to 20 C. There is now some doubt about high pressure dominating for very long; models have discovered that Beryl will make a fast run northeast over the next four days and will end up energizing what had been a weak jet stream over the western Atlantic sector. This could scupper projections of dominant high pressure as an energetic jet stream could keep pushing Atlantic disturbances (one of them remnants of Beryl) across the Atlantic during the week following the brief dry spell. However, it's rather uncertain yet and we could be seeing a return to better outlook conditions.

My local weather on Saturday was breezy and hot (32C) with almost unbroken sunshine, last night's weak line of thundershowers ended up promoting an outbreak of severe storms in Montana where the hot air mass ran into a cooler sector over west-central Canada. But the ridge remains strong over the west coast and we're in for a week of hot weather here. Meanwhile, Beryl is rather slowly organizing back into a hurricane over the west-central Gulf of Mexico. While the official forecast is warning of a landfall on the central Texas coast around Port O'Connor to Freeport, steering currents are a bit uncertain and the Galveston area could end up seeing the landfall Monday night instead. Some guidance now brings remnants of Beryl up into the Great Lakes region by mid-week.

Monday, 8 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... Frequent showers, rainfall amounts generally near average but variable and tending to be heavier inland south and east. Sunshine near or a bit below normal.

    FORECASTS

TODAY increasing cloud with a few showers mostly in northern counties, rain approaching south coast late afternoon, highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT rain spreading gradually north, heaviest inland south and east (10-20 mm potential), lows near 11 C.

TUESDAY any brighter intervals at first confined to northwest counties, some outbreaks of rain mostly in south and east, spreading to central counties at times; highs 15 to 18 C. WEDNESDAY occasional showers, heavier rain early in day near Irish Sea coastlines, lows near 11 C and highs near 17 C. THURSDAY showers at times, clearing in west and north later in day, lows near 8 C and highs near 16 C. FRIDAY variable cloud, a few showers, lows near 9 C and highs near 18 C. SATURDAY partly to mostly sunny with highs closer to 20 C. By SUNDAY another disturbance could be approaching with rain possible into MONDAY 15th. Trend for the outlook period is gradually warmer but still unsettled and some heavy rainfalls at times, probably more frequent thunderstorm activity given the temperature trend (highs will average around low 20s).

My local weather on Sunday was sunny and hot, highs near 34 C. At least there is no humidity in the air mass and it cools off relatively fast after sunset (19 C at nearly midnight here now, fans on to encourage that inside). Beryl has just been upgraded to a cat-1 hurricane as it approaches a landfall near Freeport, Texas in about three to six hours. From there, it will track all the way to southern Ontario as a tropical depression bringing a lot of rain along its path. Very humid air mass over eastern U.S. ahead of this could promote locally torrential rainfalls in Midwest, Ohio valley and inland northeast, southwestern Ontario next 2-3 days.

Tuesday, 9 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... temperatures gradually warming to near average for July, rainfall ranges from 125% of normal in Leinster and east Ulster to 25% near west coast as disturbances track across the Irish Sea for several days. Rather cloudy but some sunshine later in the interval.

    FORECASTS

TODAY rather wet in Leinster and east Ulster, 10-20 mm in a few heavy showers and risk of a thunderstorm, showers more scattered and brief further west, a few places near Atlantic coast could remain dry. Highs only 13 to 16 C in the rain, 14 to 18 C further west.
TONIGHT will be cloudy with occasional rain or drizzle in eastern counties, overcast but dry further west. Lows 7 to 10 C.
WEDNESDAY will continue partly cloudy to overcast with showers, mostly in eastern counties again, highs 14 to 17 C.
THURSDAY cloudy with sunny intervals, isolated showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 17 C.
FRIDAY partly cloudy, a few isolated showers, lows near 6 C and highs near 17 C.
SATURDAY cloudy with sunny breaks, a few afternoon showers mostly in central and northern counties. Lows near 7 C and highs 17 to 20 C.
SUNDAY intervals of rain in south and east, showers elsewhere, lows near 10 C and highs near 19 C.
NEXT WEEK looks a bit warmer with a few wet intervals but also spells of warm sunshine likely as highs edge up into the low 20s.

My local weather on Monday was sunny, hazy and hot with highs near 37 C locally and lower 40s in valleys, a few daily records were set but all-time records around here are mid-40s. Beryl moved inland and gave the Houston region a prolonged downpour with tropical storm force winds all day, easing later, but the remnants are moving into Arkansas with a few isolated tornadoes being created by the wind shear. By Thursday the system will be dying out over central Ontario and western Quebec. Very hot and humid in eastern states, and the severe heat wave continues in the west. It has led to a couple of very extensive wildfires in southern Utah which is a shame in such a lovely setting. They are not very close to inhabited areas at present, on either side of Bryce Canyon National Park but not in the park itself.

Wednesday, 10 July, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... Rather cloudy, a bit more rain today but generally a dry interval coming up for many parts of Ireland from Thursday to Sunday, rain spreading in again later Sunday and into Monday. Temperatures slowly warming up towards normal July values.

    FORECASTS
TODAY a few areas of west Ulster and north Connacht will see 10-15 mm rainfalls while north Leinster and east Ulster could have a second go at the circling mass of rainfall later but by then it will be more of a drizzle event. Some southern counties will see variable cloud and a few sunny breaks. Highs will range from 18 C in the south, to 15 C central and 13 C northern counties.
TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast, a bit more light rain in parts of Ulster as the system continues to weaken. Lows 7 to 10 C.
THURSDAY to SATURDAY, all three days will be similar, partly cloudy in general, some overcast intervals, isolated showers but not a large amount of rain and some places dry. Lows each day near 8 C and highs 16 to 19 C.
By SUNDAY cloud will be spreading in from both the southwest and the northeast as two different lows slowly approach from those directions. It is not likely that either will bring a lot of rain unless one or the other speeds up, they are basically both trying to break down a weak ridge that is responsible for the dry interval expected. Similar temperatures, lows near 8 C and highs 15 to 19 C.
MONDAY seems likely to become rather wet, as both lows manage to make some progress into parts of Ireland and eventually they will merge over the Irish Sea by TUESDAY, so a couple of rather wet days are possible, temperatures steady 17 to 19 C.
Somewhat warmer air masses are likely to reach Ireland later next week as the jet stream begins to rise and fill the persistent trough that has led to such a cool spell of weather in most of June and early July. Highs could eventually reach the low 20s.

My local weather on Tuesday was scorching hot at 40 C, and there is little relief in sight but we are making our own relief by going on a road trip planned for this time period anyway (not just to escape the heat) down to the coast where this heat will end today (Wednesday). I will probably be able to post forecasts and in any case not leaving until Thursday. Once the heat ends on the coast, a warm but not hot air mass will sit over that part of B.C. and this heat wave will continue east of the Cascades in most of the interior and all of the Pacific northwest states except their Pacific coastal areas.

Thursday, 11 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... rather cloudy, small amounts of rain over next few days, wetter again Monday and Tuesday, temperatures slowly edging up towards July normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY a few sporadic outbreaks of light rain will continue to drift south through central Leinster and nearby parts of Connacht and Munster, but in general these will be drying out by afternoon as sunny breaks become more prolonged as may be the case earlier in west Munster and Connacht. Highs 15 to 18 C. Further rainfalls only about 3-5 mm where any rain does fall. Last places to clear out will be Carlow and Wexford, but just drizzly showers by then.

TONIGHT rather cloudy but a few breaks, spotty drizzle possible, lows around 7 C.

FRIDAY cloudy with a few sunny breaks, isolated showers over north-central inland counties mostly. Highs 15 to 18 C.

SATURDAY variable cloud, afternoon showers possible, lows near 8 C and highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY some chance of sporadic showers over Ulster from a disturbance moving west through Britain; otherwise, variable cloud and one or two late showers possible in south and west from another frontal system pushing slowly inland from Atlantic. Lows around 10 C and highs around 19 C (except 16 C in parts of Ulster).

MONDAY-TUESDAY some heavier rain likely and risk of thunderstorms, lows near 12 C and highs near 20 C.

Beyond that, current guidance continues to suggest a slightly warmer trend but still unsettled at times, no long spells of hot, dry weather are foreseen before August at least (if then).

My local weather continued scorching hot on Wednesday with highs close to 40 C. The novelty has worn off. A very weak and bone dry cold front has pushed inland to our west and north but it's just a weak windshift zone now without any cloud or storms. Heat will continue in this region to about Thursday next week but it will be a bit cooler near the Pacific. This heat is going to send out a calling card to eastern regions of N America but it won't be a long hot spell (it is already very warm and humid but this will push east coast temperatures up closer to 38-40 C). Remnant rainfalls from Beryl drenched parts of Michigan, Ontario and Quebec and brought severe storms to upstate New York and PA, w MD and n VA earlier.

Friday, 12 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS continue rather cloudy with small amounts of rain until Monday-Tuesday when more significant amounts are expected. Temperatures rather cool especially daytime highs, overnight lows closer to normal values.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with a few breaks, and some light drizzly showers are expected in parts of Connacht and west Ulster; these could spread into midlands later. Rainfall amounts only 1-3 mm where any rain does fall. Highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with drizzle in a few areas, lows 7 to 9 C.

SATURDAY cloudy with a few breaks, some light showers developing mainly across northern counties. Highs 15 to 17 C.

SUNDAY cloudy with sunny intervals, isolated showers mostly in north. Lows 6 to 9 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

MONDAY and TUESDAY will be cloudy with heavier rain at times, some thunderstorms possible. Lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C.

There is still some indication of slightly warmer temperatures later in July although no large changes are foreseen at this point.

My local weather was sunny and very warm while travelling to coast, highs generally close to 30 C along our route and in high 20s near the coast. It remains very hot further inland and all across the western half of the U.S.; Salt Lake City had a new record high of 41 C (106 F) and lower desert regions are close to 48 C (118 F).

Saturday, 13 July, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain cloudy, cool but slowly moderating temperatures, rainfall gradually increasing through next week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with a few breaks, and outbreaks of drizzly light rain most persistent in midlands and later into central Leinster. Highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT will be mostly cloudy with patchy drizzle, lows near 10 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast, with patchy light rain mostly in northern counties, highs near 17 C.

MONDAY to WEDNESDAY will see more significant outbreaks of rain, and eventually quite windy by Tuesday night into Wednesday. Highs in 15 to 18 C range, nights milder near 11 C. Winds will become southwest 50 to 80 km/hr by early Wednesday morning and will veer westerly 60 to i90 km/hr in exposed Atlantic coastal counties by Wednesday afternoon. About 15 to 30 mm rain in total, risk of thunderstorms may develop into late Tuesday.

A more settled spell is likely to follow. Guidance becomes split by next weekend (20th-21st), with one source showing a wet interval in the south from passing low pressure, but other sources not bringing that system into play, so that warmer and settled weather could continue a few more days. Either way, for some part of the week later on, temperatures could be closer to normal and into the low 20s.

My travel weather near the west coast remains sunny and warm with Friday's high about 28 C. It appears to have remained hot in the mid to upper 30s back inland so we are glad to be relatively moderate here; locals are complaining of heat but for us after several days near 40 C this feels quite tolerable and overnight lows are around 15 C.

Sunday, 14 July, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS … Somewhat warmer (closer to normal July values), becoming wet at times, rather cloudy.

    FORECASTS

TODAY cloudy with sunny breaks, some outbreaks of light rain west-central counties, spreading slowly east. Highs 16 to 20 C.

TONIGHT cloudy, fog patches, drizzle, lows near 10 C.

MONDAY variable cloud, a few outbreaks of light rain, muggy, highs 18 to 21 C.

TUESDAY cloudy, a few showers, becoming breezy, lows near 12 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

WEDNESDAY breezy to windy, from south at first, veering to westerly, 50 to 80 km/hr in exposed coastal areas. Rain heavy at times, some embedded thunderstorms possible. Lows near 13 C and highs 17 to 21 C.

THURSDAY and following, rather cloudy, warm and humid, highs generally around 20 or a bit higher, overnight lows often 12 to 15 C, a few outbreaks of rain, and occasional heavy rainfalls in northern counties. An unsettled regime seems likely to persist well into late July but it will certainly be a bit warmer than the first half of the month.

My travel weather continues sunny and warm with highs near 30 C in Vancouver BC on Saturday; a greater heat continues further inland.

Monday, 15 July, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS … Somewhat warmer (closer to normal July values), becoming wet at times, rather cloudy.

    FORECASTS

TODAY variable cloud, a few outbreaks of light rain soreading into Munster and south Leinster by afternoon, muggy, highs 18 to 21 C.

TONIGHT will remain wet across the south, but rain increasingly confined to southeast by early morning, cloudy but with dry intervals and drizzle further north. Lows 10 to 13 C.

TUESDAY cloudy, a few showers, becoming breezy, lows near 12 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

WEDNESDAY breezy to windy, from south at first, veering to westerly, 50 to 80 km/hr in exposed northwest coastal areas. Rain heavy at times, some embedded thunderstorms possible. Lows near 13 C and highs 17 to 21 C.

THURSDAY and following, rather cloudy, warm and humid, highs generally around 16 to 19 or 20, overnight lows often 12 to 15 C, a few outbreaks of rain, and occasional heavy rainfalls in northern counties. Another wet interval is likely by Friday night or Saturday. An unsettled regime seems likely to persist well into late July but it will certainly be a bit warmer than the first half of the month.

My travel weather continues sunny and warm with highs near 27 C in Vancouver BC on Sunday; greater heat 33 to 37 C continues further inland. Driving back to home base on Monday afternoon and evening, should be able to update forecasts around usual time.

Tuesday, 16 July, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... warmer with fairly settled conditions in south and east, occasional rain in west and north, but guidance has shifted somewhat towards a more pleasant scenario in general, and it appears it could be signalling a similar shift in previous guidance for next week also.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to sunny at times, with just a slight chance of brief showers in north. Rather warm by recent standards, highs 18 to 22 C.
TONIGHT will become partly cloudy to overcast, quite mild, lows around 11 to 14 C.
WEDNESDAY, breezy and continued rather warm, only a glancing blow from a now more distant Atlantic disturbance, so a bit of rain possible near west coast and into Ulster later, otherwise, brief showers at most, some hazy sunshine at times, highs 18 to 22 C.
THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue reasonably fine and dry with highs around 21 or 22 C.
From next weekend on, guidance continues to suggest a somewhat greater potential for rainfall but the way it backed off on mid-week's potential suggests it could eventually do the same and so the weekend seems set to be somewhere between 18 and 21 C with chances of rain decreasing from west to east and also possibly as new guidance comes in later this week.

My time away ended on Monday; it was hot and sunny and we're back in very hot conditions at home. Fires are beginning to start, on a small scale, all over the previously low-risk and well-watered forest areas in the south of B.C., a week of severe heat has dried things out, so any small event such as a tree falling on power lines or a car parked near long grass can spark a small fire and this has been the case on Monday along our route (wasn't me, officer). Severe heat also spread into eastern U.S. states and the high at Washington DC was 39 C (102 F). It seldom gets much warmer than that in the region.

Wednesday, 17 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS will continue warmer, still rather unsettled with rainfalls about 50 to 75 per cent of a normal weekly interval in July, near average sunshine between occasional cloudier intervals with rain.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy and warm, with longer sunny intervals in south and east. Some rain at times by afternoon in Connacht and west Ulster, 2 to 5 mm likely there. Highs 18 to 23 C, warmest inland southeast. Quite breezy at times near Atlantic coasts (southerly 40 to 70 km/hr).

TONIGHT cloudy and mild, rain spreading gradually further east, about 5 mm in places, lows 11 to 14 C.

THURSDAY rain at times in eastern counties, gradual clearing in parts of west, rather warm especially where sunshine develops later in day. Highs 17 to 21 C.

FRIDAY increasing cloud, some rain by evening in south, west, not spreading into central, eastern or northern counties until overnight. Lows 10 to 13 C, highs 18 to 22 C.

SATURDAY will see rather frequent rainfall slowly spreading east and a slow clearing trend in the west by afternoon as winds gradually turn northwesterly at moderate speeds. Lows near 13 C and highs 15 to 18 C.
SUNDAY partly cloudy, isolated showers, lows near 12 C and highs 17 to 20 C.
NEXT WEEK will be quite close to normal late July values in all regards according to current guidance with occasional passing fronts, showery rainfalls and dry intervals between them. Highs next week will average about 19 C, lows about 11 C.

My local weather continues sunny and hot, it was around 38 C again on Tuesday, with another week to go in our heat wave. A two-day intense heat wave is ending over eastern U.S. regions, Tuesday's high was 40 C in Washington and Baltimore, 37 C in Philadelphia and parts of n NJ, and 35 C around NYC. Severe storms erupted over many of those locations by late afternoon. A cooler trend lies ahead. Toronto saw very heavy rainfalls flooding urban freeways and stranding a few motorists briefly.

Thursday, 18 July, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... unsettled, rather cloudy, temperatures near normal but milder at night and cooler by day relative to normal values. Rainfalls close to average, Saturday looking like quite a wet day.

    FORECASTS

TODAY a few passing showers in east, variable cloudiness and isolated showers further west, becoming heavier by afternoon there. Blustery southwest breezes 40 to 60 km/hr at times. Highs around 18 to 21 C.

TONIGHT cloudy with a few breaks, mild, lows near 12 C.

FRIDAY increasing cloud, rain by evening in south and west, highs around 22 C in some areas ahead of this rainfall.

SATURDAY dull and wet, 15 to 25 mm rain possible, a late afternoon to evening clearance in gusty northwesterly winds for western counties but that will not reach the east until late evening. Lows around 12 C and highs 15 to 17 C.

SUNDAY variable cloud, breezy to windy at times, passing showers and lows near 13 C, highs 17 to 20 C.

MONDAY and TUESDAY will be somewhat unsettled also with further showers and highs near 20 C.

A few more pleasant intervals are likely later in the month and towards its conclusion, highs 17 to 22 C will be about the full range to be expected, a few cooler nights in the mix when skies clear. Early August at this long range appears to go back to wet and windy conditions with well-developed frontal systems approaching from the southwest.

My local weather was sunny and hot (max 37 C) again, but cloud increased by late afternoon. All regional mountain ranges were creating local upslope thunderstorms with little rainfall and occasional lightning; as a result, several fires appear to have started about 30-50 km east of us over the Selkirk Mountains. The closer Monashee range was not as active.

Friday, 19 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... Rather warm, often cloudy, some significant rainfalls on Saturday and Monday, otherwise rather dry.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy and warm, with rain late in the day in west and southwest. Highs 21 to 24 C.

TONIGHT will see rainfall moving slowly east, arriving on east coast by Saturday morning. Lows 11 to 14 C.

SATURDAY outbreaks of rain (10-15 mm) will gradually move east followed by partial clearing of skies evident in western counties by early afternoon, and east coast by late afternoon or evening. Highs 14 to 17 C.

SUNDAY variable cloud, rain in southwest by evening. Breezy to windy at times, westerly 40-60 km/hr. Lows near 11 C and highs near 19 C.

MONDAY rain tapering to showers, breezy, lows near 12 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

TUESDAY variable cloud, a few showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 20 C.

WEDNESDAY onward, a more settled interval is likely, some further light rain possible late in the week but several quite fine days indicated near end of July, temperatures generally close to average with highs 19 to 22 C.

My local weather went back to hot and dry without any storms building up at all, highs 35 to 40 C depending on elevation. The east coast heat wave has ended with a cold front pushing as far south as the Gulf coast states, so the Midwest and northeast are enjoying seasonable July weather with highs 25 to 28 C.

THURSDAY to TUESDAY 30th a more settled interval is likely, some further light rain is possible with a weak frontal system late in the week but several quite fine days are also indicated near end of July, with temperatures generally close to average, highs 19 to 22 C.
Current guidance now showing early August unsettled but not as windy as depicted yesterday, perhaps this theme will return as it's almost two weeks away.

My local weather on Saturday was sunny, hazy and hot with a high of 38 C. We have now had 18 days with no rain and an average high of 35 C. Forests have dried out and some serious fires have started up but so far smoke problems locally are minor, with a slight haze; the full moon rose orange-red this evening.

Monday, 22 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... Temperatures near average, rainfall below average (about 25 to 50 per cent of normal values), and some sun at times but rather cloudy overall.

    FORECASTS

TODAY variable cloud at first, dry until rain moves in by afternoon, about 5 mm expected, highs 16 to 20 C.
TONIGHT showers ending, lows 9 to 12 C.
TUESDAY variable cloud, hazy sunshine developing, with highs near 20 C.
WEDNESDAY variable cloud, warm and muggy, showers later and highs near 22 C.
THURSDAY and FRIDAY variable cloud, occasional showers, highs near 20 C.
NEXT WEEKEND and into NEXT WEEK warmer in stages, highs into low or even mid 20s at times.

My local weather on Sunday was hazy and hot with highs near 40 C; forest fire smoke was rather thick in the air for part of the day but it cleared away in the afternoon. We are likely at peak of this prolonged heat wave now with two or three days left before cooler air, already present on the coast, moves inland far enough to bring temperatures down to more average levels near 28 C.

    FORECASTS

TODAY variable cloud, hazy sunshine developing, with highs near 20 C.

TONIGHT cloudy, a few outbreaks of light rain in southwest, lows 11 to 13 C.

WEDNESDAY variable cloud, warm and muggy, showers later and highs near 22 C.

THURSDAY variable cloud, occasional showers, lows near 11 C and highs near 20 C.

FRIDAY partly cloudy, passing showers, lows 8 to 10 C and highs near 19 C.

NEXT WEEKEND and into NEXT WEEK warmer in stages, highs into low or even mid 20s at times. It will remain quite warm to around weekend of 3-4 August.

My local weather on Monday started cloudy with remnants of overnight storms overhead, just a few raindrops, then it cleared during the afternoon turning quite hot again, high near 35 C. Looking forward to a cooling trend now, slow at first, eventually down to more average highs of 25 to 28 C by Thursday-Friday here. Conditions in most central and eastern regions of North America are close to July averages.

Wednesday, 24 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... rather warm and relatively dry, sunshine amounts improving towards weekend.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals, and patchy outbreaks of drizzle or light rain, feeling rather muggy, highs 18 to 22 C.
TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast, spots of drizzle and moderate westerly breezes, lows 11 to 13 C.
THURSDAY partly cloudy, passing showers, highs 18 to 21 C.
FRIDAY partly cloudy, a few showers or intervals of light rain, lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.
SATURDAY variable cloud and isolated showers in the morning, clearing to sunny skies by afternoon, lows near 9 C and highs near 21 C.
SUNDAY sunny with cloudy intervals, warmer, lows near 10 C and highs near 23 C.
MONDAY and TUESDAY will remain relatively warm and dry with a few showers in north and west from weak frontal systems, breezy towards north coast at times, lows near 12 C and highs near 21 C.
Later next week, becoming more breezy and slightly cooler with a few passing showers likely, highs 19 or 20 C.
August looks like starting out fairly drab and drizzly but relatively mild in a moist west-southwest flow ... could turn warmer at times as high pressure not too far distant to southwest.

My local weather remained sunny and hot but not quite as intense as previous days with a high near 32 C. Today (Wednesday) looks like bringing an end to this two-week stretch of hot and dry weather, hoping we don't get lightning but scattered thunderstorms will probably accompany a cold front. The intense heat is going to shift into the plains states for about a week leaving us in more tolerable mid-20s air masses.

TONIGHT partly cloudy, clear intervals, lows 8 to 11 C.

FRIDAY partly cloudy, a few showers or intervals of light rain, and highs near 18 C.

SATURDAY variable cloud and isolated showers in the morning, clearing to sunny skies by afternoon, lows near 9 C and highs near 21 C.

SUNDAY sunny with cloudy intervals, warmer, lows near 10 C and highs near 23 C east, 19 to 21 C west.

MONDAY to WEDNESDAY will remain relatively warm and dry with a few showers in north and west from weak frontal systems, breezy towards north coast at times, lows near 12 C and highs near 21 or 22 C.
Later next week, becoming more breezy and slightly cooler with a few passing showers likely, highs 19 or 20 C.
August looks like starting out fairly drab and drizzly but relatively warm in a moist west-southwest flow ... and it could turn even warmer at times as high pressure will be often located not too far distant to southwest.

My local weather remained sunny, quite hazy with layers of smoke aloft at times, with a high near 29 C. It is turning cooler overnight as a rather dry cold front passes. The severe heat we had for almost two weeks is now located over eastern Montana (43 C at Glasgow, Montana on Wednesday) and nearby states, and will eventually set up over the central plains states, reaching the east coast in somewhat modified form by next week. The town of Jasper and facilities of Jasper National Park are being threatened by fast-moving and apparently out of control wildfires, also some rather serious fires about 150 km north of my present location, around where we were living in 2018-19 (Slocan Lake region).

TRENDS ... relatively warm and dry for most of this week, becoming more unsettled near end of week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY a few rather brief but heavy showers will move through Leinster and east Ulster this morning, followed by partly cloudy and breezy conditions, highs 18 to 22 C.

TONIGHT variable cloud, lows near 12 C.

SUNDAY hazy sunshine and warm, highs 20 to 23 C.

MONDAY variable cloud, warm and humid. A few brief intervals of drizzle or light rain near west coast but this will tend to break up before moving very far east inland. Highs 19 to 22 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY will continue quite warm with hazy sunshine at times, isolated showers in west and north, lows near 14 C and highs 21 to 24 C.

THURSDAY variable cloud, showers, lows near 14 C and highs 19 to 22 C.

FRIDAY (with some uncertainty) seems likely to bring heavier showers and highs near 19 C.

The weekend of 3-4 August looks quite unsettled too, with temperatures falling back into 17-19 C range.

Some guidance for August is looking unsettled at times and quite wet on a few occasions, hopefully this will improve closer to the time.

My local weather was partly cloudy and hazy with sunny intervals growing longer by afternoon, highs around 24 C. The severe heat was quickly pushed further south from west-central Canada and Montana-North Dakota earlier Friday and is now centered over Kansas and Nebraska. It's closer to July averages in eastern regions with a pleasant weekend expected in the northeastern U.S.

TONIGHT clear with a few clouds in western counties, lows 8 to 12 C, large contrasts likely between urban and rural areas.

MONDAY variable cloud, warm and humid. A few brief intervals of drizzle or light rain near west coast but this will tend to break up before moving very far east inland. Highs 19 to 22 C. Better sunshine values likely in east and south at least away from south coast.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY will continue quite warm with hazy sunshine at times, isolated showers in west and north, lows near 14 C and highs 21 to 24 C.

THURSDAY variable cloud, showers, lows near 14 C and highs 19 to 22 C.

The weekend of 3-4 August looks unsettled too, with temperatures falling back into 17-19 C range. If anything, it looks a bit less unsettled on latest guidance but changes are rather marginal. Eventually moving further into August the chances of occasionally heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms appears to increase gradually but temperatures stay close to average.

My local weather on Saturday was quite hazy from distant forest fires, and it warmed up again to near 28 C.

Tuesday, 30 July, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... warm and mostly dry to end of week, increasing risk of showers by Friday into weekend, temperatures 2 to 4 deg above normal falling back to near average.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with longer sunny intervals developing, quite warm, highs 22 to 24 C. Isolated and brief showers are possible mainly in Atlantic coastal counties and parts of inland south.

TONIGHT hazy and warm, lows 12 to 15 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy and warm with isolated showers, lows near 14 C and highs 22 to 24 C.

THURSDAY increasing cloud, showers becoming a bit more widespread by afternoon or evening from west to east, lows near 15 C and highs 21 to 24 C.

FRIDAY will be overcast with passing showers, becoming frequent in western counties, spreading east by afternoon; lows near 14 C and highs 18 to 22 C. Moderate southwest to westerly breezes.

SATURDAY partly cloudy, breezy and cooler with a few showers, winds westerly 40 to 60 km/hr, lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY intervals of rain, lows near 12 C and highs near 17 C.

MONDAY partly cloudy, breezy, cool, with a few showers, lows near 9 C and highs near 16 C.

Most of next week looks similar with a cool, unsettled regime although a bit of sunshine likely in the mix also.

My local weather on Monday was overcast with a bit of hazy sun for a while followed by light rain, amounting to about 2 mm, first significant rain we've seen since 2nd of July. Several large fires are burning about 100-200 km north of us, smoke from those is apparently quite bad into northern Idaho but is staying east of our location for now. Some guidance is showing a resurgence of tropical activity next week but details vary considerably from one weather model to another, Florida was the main focus about a week from now.

Wednesday, 31 July, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... warm and dry for another day or two (depending on how far east you are), followed by a more unsettled and near-average (for temperatures) interval.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out sunny and very warm, with increasing cloud later in the day. Spotty showers are possible near Atlantic and southwest coasts by early evening. Highs 22 to 25 C.
TONIGHT will be rather cloudy with a few clear intervals in east, light rain showers at times in west. Quite mild, lows 13 to 16 C.
THURSDAY will feature a few showers and variable amounts of cloud, it will still be rather warm in eastern and some inland southern counties at 22-24 C. Further west and near south coast, around 20 C.
FRIDAY variable cloud, passing showers, lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C west, 21 C east.
SATURDAY partly cloudy, passing showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.
SUNDAY cloudy, rain slowly spreading east but parts of Leinster could have at least a dry morning interval. Lows near 12 C and highs near 18 C.
MONDAY partly to mostly cloudy, cool, showers. Lows near 9 C and highs near 17 C.
Rest of next week will continue a bit unsettled and near seasonal averages if not a degree or so below at 18-21 C.

My local weather continues much more moderate than the middle portions of July, as cloud kept highs in the low 20s. It stayed dry locally but a few showers further north helped a little with a rather urgent fire-fighting mission -- we have been very fortunate for quite a few years in my part of the province, avoiding significant fires mainly due to timing of thunderstorms, we always seem to get them at their diurnal weak point around late morning, and then they flare up moving further north. Anyway, there is quite a lot of smoke drifting east in the jet stream, I don't know if it will ever have any impact in western Europe but you might get some unusually colorful sunsets by later in August and into September.
The heat that we were experiencing a week or two back, is now over Kansas and eastern Colorado where several locations hit 42 C on Tuesday.

Thursday, 1st of August, 2024 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... temperatures will be closer to seasonal averages but still slightly above normal in some parts of the east and south, rainfall will increase especially in west and north where it could become heavy at times by Sunday. Not as much sunshine as we've enjoyed in the past several days.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy, still rather warm in east and south, highs near 23 C. Some rain at times further west, highs 20 or 21 C.

TONIGHT variable cloud, passing showers, lows 10 to 13 C.

FRIDAY some rain at times, becoming heavier in western counties by mid-day to afternoon. Highs near 19 C west, 21 C east.

SATURDAY breezy with passing showers, lows near 11 C and highs near 19 C.

SUNDAY rather warm and humid at first, rain becoming quite heavy in western and later central to northern counties (15-25 mm potential). Lows near 12 C and highs 18 to 21 C. Some coastal areas could become quite windy also, winds southwesterly 50 to 70 km/hr in a few areas.

MONDAY variable cloud, breezy to windy at times, some further rain, muggy. Lows near 12 C and highs 18 to 21 C.

The rest of next week appears fairly close to August normal values with a few further intervals of rain separated by brief dry intervals. In fact, little change is foreseen in this changeable and near-normal pattern well into mid-August.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny with a few clouds and the start of a warming trend as we get back into hotter weather eventually; high was around 27 C.

Friday, 2 August, 2024 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS ... staying rather warm to about Wednesday although some cooler intervals will come and go, so temperatures are likely to average about 1.5 deg above average. Rainfalls becoming heavier at times in western counties, still a relatively dry trend for the east. A bit of sunshine at times but cloudier than past week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out partly cloudy and warm in eastern counties, while a strong frontal system will soon be moving into Atlantic coastal counties; isolated heavy thunderstorms are likely in Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo, and Clare. Some clearing will follow this frontal passage in the west, and it will continue to move east but weaken somewhat, even so, isolated heavy showers are possible in the east by afternoon. Highs 20 to 22 C. Some strong wind gusts are possible, near active storm cells, with gusts to 80 km/hr for brief intervals.
TONIGHT will be breezy and generally dry but one or two isolated showers may develop, lows 9 to 12 C.
SATURDAY will be a bright and breezy day with some passing showers and a fresher feel than recent days, highs 18 to 20 C, winds southwest 40 to 60 km/hr. Mild overnight into Sunday morning, lows reaching about 12 C.
SUNDAY will start out warm and humid and another active front is timed for early afternoon in western counties; details may change closer to the event but at present it looks to have potential to create locally heavy rainfalls in western Connacht and Clare, into the 30-50 mm range, which could cause flooding in small drainage basins especially around Connemara. This will not likely move very fast eastwards and may die out over west Ulster and the central counties of Connacht without bringing more than 5-10 mm rain elsewhere. Highs around 21 C, winds south to southwest 40 to 60 km/hr at times.
MONDAY will be another fresher day with gusty southwest to west winds and passing showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.
TUESDAY increasing cloud, outbreaks of light rain, becoming humid with lows near 12 C and highs near 19 C.
WEDNESDAY could also be an active weather day but for now we'll go with showers and isolated thunderstorms, warm, lows near 15 C and highs near 23 C.
Cooler and unsettled at times later in the week, highs 18 to 20 C.

My local weather on Thursday was sunny and hot again with highs back up around 32 C. There are signs of tropical developments next week near the east coast of the U.S., and some guidance is showing a weak hurricane forming and moving along in the Gulf stream towards northern Scotland by about ten days from now; this could in theory be a windy event for parts of Ireland around 10-11 Aug but nothing too definite yet.
