Let me be clear about this. This is not a thread about Northern Ireland. Attempts to turn it into one will result in summary deletion of off-topic posts, infractions, and bannings. I don't care at all how passionate you're pro or anti Sinn Fein, the guns are to be left at the door.

That's laughable. Her husband could have looked after the child, she could have paid for a childminder, or she could have stepped down from the role.

Just imagine the reaction if a man used that as an excuse for poor attendance.

Nothing particularly against Ryan but I'm not voting for anyone in Fianna Fail this election. Gonna go with Higgins first preference

Maybe he could have gave birth to the child too..... and breastfed it......

Since apparently further clarification is necessary, here it is. There is already a thread about Mary-Lou. This one is not about Mary-Lou, who wasn't on the program.

[EDIT]I beg pardon, Mary Lou was on the program - but this thread is still not about Mary Lou![/EDIT]

Well I saw some of it.. I also saw the questions and answers programme recently where 3 of them quoted as what they did was " being part of the programme that got x million for regional development in ireland".They all got the money.. but the impression I got was "Hey Irish Meps.. were dealin out the development funds..you good with x million?"
Aside from that there was a lot of talk about being at the heart of the decision making process.
Some posts elsewhere have informed me that they only make decisions on things that are under the EU's remit and arent allowed to make any country specific input.
Ive also been informed that things like the staement from the green party candidate for munsters statement that:"80% of our legislation comes from Europe" is incorrect.
Perhaps that should have been edited out.
The buzzwords among the candidates speaking were all about hitting the " we need to renegotiate fisheries policy and agriculture, but Ive also been informed that most of this work is done outside of the European parliament, and why would they suddenly want to renegoitiate close to election time? theyve had years.
Ive also been informed that they arent allowed to make any comment about the "thing" that we will be having a constitutional referendum on soon,in Europe.
Well nm weel see them all back next time whoever gets in.

Hope this isn't considered off topic, and im not questioning your previous part of the post but I thought Mary Lou was part of the line up? I got the impression from some posts she was and others that she wasn't there? (I'm not interested in discussing her here, just curious was she on Prime Time tonight?!)

Really enjoyed last nights show, although my question was not asked the general topic of competitiveness and job creation was discussed.

My opinion was that Eoin Ryan came across badly. He could only talk about one specific instance where he brought some guys from UCD, TCD and one or two companies together to get money for R&D. Thats great, but he has been an MEP for 5 years and if that is the only thing he could argue with I have to say I am disappointed in him.

Mary-Lou I thought came across well, she shows an ability to relate to the people on the ground. But it wouldnt be difficult as she was arguing with Eoin Ryan who...well I have already commented. But for a sitting MEP she did not convey the work she has done nor what she will achieve in the next 5 years if elected.

Colm Burke seemed to show an understanding of the European Parliment and its workings. He also indicated as to the type of work that he was doing in Europe. But I have to say, he made very little impact on me, for a sitting MEP who is looking like he loose his seat, he didnt fight enough.

The guy from Libertas was useless!

Sorry I missed this now - I'd have loved to have seen the MEPs comment on how the latest proposed amendments to the Firearms Acts contravene the EU directive on Firearms (91/477/EEC) by requiring all Irish firearms owners to only purchase ammunition or firearms from Irish registered firearms dealers instead of the current (and in force since 1964) laws that allow them to purchase from any registered firearms dealer so long as the appropriate paperwork is in place.

Eoin Ryan's reaction to Dermot Ahern's proposed legislation would have been especially fun to watch, as it would have pointed to whether he put the EU above FF or FF above the EU.

When she was getting asked that direct question on what she would do in Europe about jobs, you could see her pursing her lips because she hadnt a clue. Her whole argument wasnt pro anything, just anti-FF. And that would be partly ok if these werent Euro Elections. This election is not about Fianna Fails history in government. Its about whos the best MEP. Mary Lou showed last night she doesnt have a clue.

And ditto for Joe Higgins. Putting in digs about the PD's even though they are effectively disbanded. All socialists are the same. They cant see beyond their own noses.

That was my point, she was able to relate to the people on the ground with her anti FF sentiment but that she didnt show that she did anything for the people of Dublin inthe last five years or that hse has any ideas for the next five years.
