Getting into making my own effects pedals. There are a good few places based in the states that sell parts for this. Does anybody know of anywhere closer to home that sells this sort of stuff.

    Thanks

Banzai Effects in Germany have a huge selection of parts. I've bought stuff from them before.

Have a look at Das Musikding, too.

If you know what you need then everything for most FX pedals (enclosure, perf board, pots, chips etc.etc.) can be gotten pretty cheaply via maplin.co.uk or Radionics etc.
Sometimes you'll need to look up equivalent NPNs etc. but it's no biggy. I've built a few pedals this way.

I realy wish there was an irish shop that dealed with this. It would be so handy.

There is, Radionics in Rialto do absolutely everything. Not so much a shop but have a trade counter open to the public. You can also order online.

Maplins too but there an a absolute rip off merchant. Alright if your really stuck though.

Peats do a few bits and pieces.

Afew tv repair shops and what not around will also help you out with some odd bits and pieces.

The likes of woodies/B&Q/Halfords etc etc.. tend to have small few resources.

Aye i know about them. I mean like a place that specialises in guitar effects pedals and amps like that banzai effects place in Germany or the countless ones in America.

Just having one near by that has all the things your looking for in one place would be handy, unrealistic but handy.

Vibe-o-tronic.co.uk is another supplier in the uk, they're basically a reseller for BYOC though.

I wouldn't think there'd be enough of a market for a shop to open in Ireland.

Just wondering what people use/where they get holes drilled in the enclosures for these DIY pedals. most of the places ship with no holes drilled

I use a standard cordless drill and metal bits for holes up to 10mm. After that I use hole punches, as I find drilling holes bigger than 10mm gets messy and burry. You can get this in most hardware stores, I got some from DPL and some others from Tube Town. Ruko and Greenlee make them.
Step bits also work well, there a kinda one-size-fits-all bit.

Always use a template with carefully measured markings (you need to be thinking in 3D here), tap/mark the centre of the holes first with a screw, and drill using gradually bigger bits (start with 2/3mm) until you get the size you want.
A bit of drilling lube also helps.
Some of the kit sites supply the templates for you.

I'm not away of anyone that actually provides an enclosure drilling service.

Unibits are a good way to go as well, right?

www.banzaieffects.com sell pre-drilled enclosures. That would probably be the easiest for you, but the only problem is you will have to design it to what they give you.

I think Unibit is a brand name from Irwin for their step bit. They're fairly high end, but very good.
For most pedal or small amp building one of the lesser ones would do, you wont be drilling through anything more than 2mm aluminium or die cast.

You said you use hole punches? I imagine they wouldn't work well with die cast?

Yeah, I wouldn't use 'em on smaller dies cast boxes. Most of the holes you'd need wouldn't be much more than 10mm anyways (cliff jacks are slightly bigger), and die cast is fairly easy to drill without much burring. Anything that is there is easily filed.
The hole punches I'd use for larger holes on aluminum or steel boxes.

    Yeah that's what I thought.

    Now to find money...

general guitar gadgets, great kits parts boards and customer service. cheaper than byoc/vibe-o-tronic by a long shot.
