I guess the choice is do you want the in depth discussion (which is clearly keeping the masses from voting) or if you want a popularity contest in the next one.

The popularity contest isn't of much value anyway, the tournament ends quicker, that's it.

I think I'll reduce the votes required from eight to six next time, I have to talk to Pter about it.

im not. im just wondering. what i was aiming for was a tight battle so i am trying to suss what the tightest one would have been.

Heck maybe i should have just left Iron Man to do it by himself then :pac:

How about a rematch where Iron Man and War Machine team up with Batman... and he gets to use THIS! :D

Popularity is fickle. The Transformers are kicking ass and taking names right now partially because of the wave of hype that comes with their new movie, but if there wasn't a shiny new movie (that the Nocs are going to conveniently enough) they probably wouldn't be doing as well.
Kind of like how the Joker beat Doomsday (somehow) off the back of The Dark Knight's popularity.

Maybe throw around the idea of removing a vote quota and having the team with the most votes at the end of a set amount of time taking the win.

If we didn't have to give reasons, I think arguably all three of the competitors in this final could have been knocked out due to them coming up against popular teams.

I tend to balance 'who I want to win' with 'who should win' to keep things varied keeping in mind inherent abilities and my own perceptions of the character. When I write my little spiels about the characters, I usually haven't decided my vote until the last few lines.

Ah I don't know, there seems to be a core group of people around the Noc that are hardcore Transformer fans. I think anyone who has voted for them has voted because they genuinely know their **** (unfortunately:p)!

But I totally hear you on the Joker and Doomsday, that's another case of no-one knowing who the hell the "other guy" (Doomsday) was!

Good idea man, I think that would be the way to go at this stage.

That's the way to do it man, I'd hate to think people were voting with just an idea of one side without not having an idea about the other side.

The popularity thing is why I was so pushy in favour of the doctor.

i'd say bats would win in a fight 4 times out of 10 with the doc. It'd be close. But I would have hated if batdude walked it. Thankfully there was pter to make it a proper debate. :)

    :)

I made the sig from a scan, I'd hate to spoil the ending (and subsequent sequels) but my money would be on Batman.

Batman actually beat two Predators on seperate occasions in the comics

I won't pit Megatron against Optimus Prime, it defeats the purpose of their "Deadly Alliance". Megatron just gets in a cheap shot on Optimus and escapes.:p:pac:

Hey people, I feel Pter and I have a good opportunity in this thread to get feedback from posters in regards to what the next tournament should be like. All ideas welcome as this is about you, the Nocturnal posters, and you all getting as much enjoyment out of this as possible.:)

    Historical figures duke it out.

Video game pro/antagonists beat the piss out of each other.

Movie pro/antagonists tear each other apart.

Celebrity stars from stage, screen and television pull hair and haul ass.

Hmmmm......if we go down the route that DooM wants, i.e. leagues, then that can be perfectly adaptable.

This one would be up to the mods and whether they feel it would be within the remit of the forum.

I'd rather we keep it to the realm of fictional, tbh. Waaa too many can o' worms with alive people and not in the remit of the forum- Supposed to be spooky, remember (although we allow nerdy too).

So would that cross out historical as well as celebrity?

Depends how historical. I'm not going to put out Joan of Ark (who was basically an emo, anyway).

    Steve Irwin? Maybe not.

    Points taken.

I haven't spoken to Pter about it in a few days but we were leaning towards a fantasy draft. I know DooM is reluctant, but I just want to see what the general consensus is. It's either fantasy draft or leagues, it's up to yourselves. Bare in mind the fantasy draft would require more commitment, but it would certainly give you more control as to how your chosen characters fare in the tourament.

Basically I think there should be leagues. I pointed out examples before. Fights chosen randomly. Perhaps a number of champions could fight at the end.

I guess the question would be how ou run the leagues...

We keep this thread open and make a rule that only current battle discussion goes on in the thread. I'll actively enforce and move posts between one and the other and keep it straight.

    That'd be the DooMidea.

I mean... do you do the leagues one by one? Or do you skip from one to the other?

Obviously if there's a draft, this is irrelivant.

If you go down a draft route, who picks the drafts?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,905 ✭✭✭✭Handsome Bob

Pter and I talked it over and we agreed that we wouldn't limit the pool of characters that you can draft from, other than disallowing huge forces such as Galactus.

You could pick 1 character each, anyone you'd like, from 5 seeded groups such as Robots, Super powered beings (either hero or villain), human heroes, Mystics and demons/vampires.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 47,826 Mod ✭✭✭✭cyberwolf77

I had an idea for a funny division actually.
Here's a few examples I came up with:
    Chucky(Child's Play)vs. Stewie Griffin(Family Guy)
    R2-D2 vs. K-9(Doctor Who)
    C3-PO vs. Shaggy (Scooby-Doo)

I'm confused... we're all fighting against each other? With teams? How does the voting work?

We'll be dangerously open to political voting... or am I getting this wrong?

To be honest I haven't fully worked out the voting aspect with Pter, it's still in the early stages of development. But I imagine what would happen is that users are drawn against each other, and they both pick a character out of their five to represent them. Then each user will write an argument as to why they feel their character would win the bout.

Admittedly it would require a lot of commitment and hard work, but Pro Wrestling and Soccer have done this, and they seemingly haven't had any issues in regards to political voting.

That's how the draft would work if we decide to go down that route. But as I said, we are still in the early stages.

Un less LZ plans to have the draft determine pairings in the competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

I think LZ said it best when he said we will end up with a tournament(or perhaps league) of who picked the best team

I think its a natural progression and incorporates at least part of most of the suggestions made before about ensuring hyper powered beings dont end up facing 'human' heores.

Definitely. The closer the fight, the more interesting it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85,686 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I could just imagine a robot league being seriously dominated by transformers.

Gizmodo tried one a while back with a light and heavyweight division. Megatron and Caprica Six took it away wildly due to popular vote and nothing to do with actual combat. Though Megatron did lose out finally to MegaMaid from Spaceballs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

Well thats the good thing about the draft....people are going to pick strong contenders....hence there will be few competitors in the fights who wouldnt actually belong there.

am i reading this right....it is basically a nocturnal/fantacy version of the pro wrestling draft?! in which each person gets their pic in order to build up a team etc?

Could do a series of 'grudge matches' before the next proper tournament begins.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,871 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

I got to say lads I have a confused. Maybe because I don't really know what a draft is in this meaning of the word, so if it sounds like I am asking stoopid questions I pwomise I'm not.

    If I'm reading this right-

    There's a pool of characters.

Lets say randomly SDooM and Nerin are picked to fight each other, in the Giant Robot league.

SDooM picks Optimus Prime. Nerin picks Voltron.

From the same pool? From seperate ones? From a pool we picked earlier? If one "player" picks a character, does that mean no one else can?

SDooM gives his reasons why Prime would win this fight, using logic, humour, whatever.

Nerin does the same for Voltron.

Then people vote on the winner? Is that it?

    Of course, DooMPrime would win.

Is it Doom or Optimus who goes through to the next round?

If it's Doom, can Optimus be used again?

Or is it, you'd pick one character per league? And your stuck with him?

If so, can someone else also pick that character? If not, who decides who picks first?

    *scratches head*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

LZ need to go over it some more.

    But basically...no

Each person who is competing gets 5 picks

Each pick should be from 1 of five types (robot, human, super powered....etc)

Then people, lets say Doom and Nerin for examples sake are drawn against each other for the first round

Doom and Nerin fight with their (for example) robot characters this time

Voting is something LZ and i have to agree on, but again, lets say its a public vote based on the facts that each person presents regarding why they think their fighter should win.

A character (eg Prime) can only be chosen once by one player for the whole tourney (so once Doom picks Prime, he is stuck with him for the whole thing and noone else can pick him)

The winner would be the person who has the team that has racked up the most wins accross all 5 types of hero.

I think. Thats just my idea. Have to discuss with LZ but thought you guys should know the gist.

    And i mean very gisty.

Do one based solely on 80s cartoon characters.

Exclude any Transformers though because it would be an automatic win for them.

Characters from Mask, Thundercats, TMNT, He-Man, She-Ra, Bravestarr, Gem & The Holograms (for the ladies), Inspector Gadget, GI Joe/Action Force, etc, etc.

Everyone knows the 80s produced the best cartoons ever.
