You should check out Bar Rouge. It's basically the back of the Grill, only it's a wine bar. They play jazz and all manner of non-commercial music in it. Nice atmosphere. Makes a nice change to actually hear any semblance of a conversation while out socialising.

Letterkenny hasn't changed that much though the lack of Northerners probably has seen things a bit quieter, due more to sterling difference rather than recession.

It depends what you are into when it comes to a night out, but Letterkenny still has it all and more to offer than most places of its size.

Yeah ur probably right .... was in the town a couple of weeks ago and it was quiet alright. Having said that Sister Saras was pretty packed - you wouldn't have thought there was a recession going on there!

I staggered across the road to the Pulse, it's still dire but handy I suppose ... and vaguely remember beating my way to the burger van afterwards .... much more than that I can't tell ya!

I'll have an update shortly ....

In case you're wondering who it is ... it's Ony Me!

Everywhere I went looks to have hit the skids.

I was out last Thursday and it was a sobering experience (if you know what I mean).

Cottage had a decent crowd and atmosphere but we (foolishly) moved on. Great music in McGinley's, but not much people or buzz. Cavern was a ghost town and VooDoo likewise. I was really depressed afterwards. Been four/five years since I was a regular out-during-the-week guy and this was... educational. And sad.

I'm told Sunday night was surprisingly quiet, too...

The town is no where near as busy as it used to be. You really need to pick a choose your nights out. Fridays are pretty quiet eveywhere i think and on a sat you've a few options Mc Ginleys, Cavern then Voodoo or saras then the pulse. Again it all depends what age you are and what you're into.

friday in the town is terrible. was in the grill last Friday night paid €10 in and there was 14 people in there the whole night.
even Milan on a sat night with its €3 drinks doesn't seem to get a crowd.

Difference between this and last recession is sterling difference, more and bigger clubs in Letterkenny, Outlawing of Drinks Promotions, no Black Economy and certainly alot of people with huge mortgages facing job and financial uncertainty.

I think the price of taxis, smoking ban and banning of Drinks promotions were starting to have an effect before the Recession anyway and we're in the middle of a culture change in Ireland as a result.

All of them have a major effect on the economy and pose serious consequences for Letterkenny more than Galway, Dublin or further south.

In saying that Letterkenny still has a lot to offer

Milans good but its really quiet until about after 1 which is kinda sh*t if you get a bus out at 12 or abouts. Sara's good for waiting dou:rolleyes:

Yes, that happens more and more, I agree. Tomorrow night I'll be sitting in with someone and having a few drinks. Much more my cup of tea nowadays.

    However...

It's a shame that when you do have the urge to head on out and see what's what, there's fudge all to see anymore. Part of the fun of heading out is bumping into those people you know, but not well enough to be in contact with. You know mates of mates, or people your friends work with, or whatever. That doesn't happen much now, cos nobody is out.

Don't go to the Drum Bar anyway. It's locals only

Nothing. It's just unless they know you they won't let you in. The door does be closed. You can't get in unless you know them and have to use the side door. It's only a small pub anyway. Holds about 30 people. Just the regulars in there every night.
