is there a certain amount of things that one can do to ensure that they receive no bank charges every quarter?? eg, have a certain amount of money in the account

There sure are, my current account is with them and you need to do one laser transaction and pay one bill online every quarter.

Move your account to one that is really free with no silly conditions - i.e Ulster or Halifax (get some interest too at Halifax (7.25% on balances up to 2k).
