Has anyone been successful in back-dating unemployment benefit?

Hi. I was made redundant last November but have been away so have not yet claimed benefit. I was working for 10 years (5 with my last job) so definitely have enough PRSI credits. However there doesn't seem to be a specific rule re back-dating. The various information websites simply say you can apply for back-dating but may not get it. Does anyone know what criteria the Govt consider when deciding whether or not to back-date it for you?

    Thanks
