Buying 2nd hand from dealer - Hints/Tips?

My mums 00 Astra (55k miles, she doesn't do cruising :)) had a crash th'other day. cost of the car is 2.6k and cost *of repair* is 3k+ so its a write off. Any way, I'm going to look at another, almost identical, 01 Astra @e3k (57k miles - my mums doppleganger) at a non-SIMI dealer.

I've never bought a second hand car before but considered trying to get a professional to come along. I'd rather be sure that the car is legit, uncrashed and unclocked. Maybe I'm being paranoid but theres a lot of heisting going on with cars and I dont want to put my mother in a dodgy car.

Can anyone make any suggestions on how to proceed?

Personally, i'd feel safer buying privately and perhaps having the car inspected by a mechanic I felt I could trust. One huge advantage of buying privately is that you get to meet the previous owner. My father has so far never bought a bad car - he knows next to nothing about mechanics, but he's very good at reading people. Just my 2c.

Is it easy to get a mechanic to go out and inspect a car with you? I dont know any personally. Maybe I could ask to take the car to a mechanic on the 'test drive'?
