What to do now with stairs/landing

I have just taken up the carpet in my kids rooms and on the stairs and landing. Bloody delighted, so now my question is, as the walls on stairs and landing were painted and paint has marked the stairs etc and is gone well into the grain what can i do apart from sanding and varnishing? Can any one rec a paint to use on…
