June 5: Polling day for Euro & local elections (and Dublin by-elections)

Today, June 5, is polling day for elections to the European Parliament, local elections to city, county and town councils and two by-elections in Dublin Central and Dublin South.

Polling stations are open from 7am until 10pm.


If you have received a polling card in the post, it will indicate the polling station that you vote at.

Note that your polling card is not official identification. You will probably be asked for identification so bring something with you.

Valid forms of ID are:
(i) a passport; (ii) a driving licence; (iii) an employee identity card containing a photograph; (iv) a student identity card issued by an educational institution and containing a photograph; (v) a travel document containing name and photograph; (vi) a Bank or Savings or Credit Union book containing address in constituency or electoral area; (vii) a Temporary Residence Certificate card; (viii) a Garda National Immigration Bureau card; (ix) a cheque book; (x) a cheque card; (xi) a credit card; (xii) a birth certificate; (xiii) a marriage certificate.

Items (ix) to (xiii) must be accompanied by a further document which establishes the address of the holder in the constituency or electoral area.

If you haven't received a polling card in the post or if you have lost it, that isn't a problem. Go to your polling station with one of the accepted pieces of identification as listed above.

If you have not received a polling card in the post and you are registered to vote, you may have difficulty figuring out where your polling station is. The easiest way of finding out is to check your details on www.checktheregister.ie. If you cannot find your details on that site but you are sure you are registered, phone your local authority and ask where your polling station is. It will be based on your postal address so they will be able to tell you.

Please take the few minutes to cast your vote. The decision you take when voting will determine who represents you in your local area and the European parliament for the next five years and, in the case of some of you in Dublin, in the Dáil until the next general election.
