A work in progress from me at the minute. My first attempt at making a dubstep tune. Really just been working on the synths so the beat and mixing etc is a bit off. Needs a bit more variation too. Hopefully I'll fix it soonish!

Okay, this is a remix I've done from an acappella a girl called Jessika Zen put up on Soundcloud. It was an excuse really to flute around with some vocals. Anyways here it is:
    http://soundcloud.com/android-78/jessika-zen-fading-lights-android-78s-piledriver-remix

Probably a little heavier than some of the stuff I've done before but it seem to suit the vocals. Let me know what you think.

Haven't gotten a chance to download this yet, should be able to this evening. I downloaded the last one you put up and I really enjoyed (one song in particular, can't remember the name of it). looking forward to listening to it later and will report back with my thoughts.

    It's awesome.

I've just kind of got it on in the background at the moment, so I'll have to give it a proper listen later, but I really like it.

Not a bad track jt. I think though for a dubstep track it would need a little bit more grit in the second half. A bit more sub bass coming through.

A new one up. A kind of deep housey affai. Until it can't compare in any way to a lot of the deep house stuff being put up on this forum I'm pretty happy with it. Let me know what you think:

Yo dude - IMhO - not the worst attempt i've heard by a long shot, however
doing the following might help -

reload your project and delete that pitched up vocal toward the end.
Get rid of the transition at 1.00mins
take some of the themes that were introduced at the start and develop them, rather than going off in a diff. direction.

Possibly the best reason for finishing any track is what you will learn while doing it. The discipline needed for this part of the process is far removed from the the discipline needed to put a few loops together. Practice the 2nd process as it's the harder one.

You won't learn how to make and finish good tracks if you don't finish the bad ones 1st.

    Anyway, best of luck

hehe, thanks for the input man :) i do need to work a bit harder on developing the ideas alright, you're dead right about that. i put up 2 other tracks in the meantime...

"eve's beach" was recorded back in 1999, and "50 ways" is a lot more recent.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10 dinite

i used to be better, but fell out of practice :)

both tracks are pretty good.... almost there... nice choice of sounds and dev. you got lazy I think..... delete that whole dumb house track and go back to your initial meanderings... much better imo..

stop using such strong language when you are giving a disclaimer about what you created... :-) ie calling your track 'dumb house' and writing things like

    "house rubbish craptastic
silly house track i made, .... not quite long enough, and a little clipping at the start doesn't help the ears."

Their are better ways of letting people know you are still learning without turning them off listening to your music. How about -

"trying my hand at house-music stylee - not too happy with it yet... anyone advise on where i'm going wrong?"

some pretty cool ideas in there.
I'd lose the kick roll completely though. gets in the way of the track i think.

Thanks for the feedback jt, much appreciated. Just wondering if you were after listening to the latest version that I put up last night. I changed the mastering on it so that the kick wasn't dampening everything the way it had been. I think the original kick roll had been too obtrusive. Do you think maybe I should get rid of it altogether?

    Thanks again for listening.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jtsuited

yeah i'd get rid of it altogether for a few reasons.

    1. You're going for a groove with the drums. Ya know, a funk feel. Straight rolls aren't really gonna work. Especially with a kick.

    2. In general rolls like that sound pretty n00by in tracks as it upsets the vibe and tries to get too much in your face.

    3. With stuff like this, remember you're going for understatement. It all goes back to the 'cool jazz' movement of the late 50's (as in deep house draws from that type of aesthetic). It's about being sort of emotionally subdued. It's supposed to have feeling but in a sort of undramatic way.

I reckon if you revisited the whole track in a real lazy, loose, mellow kind of way you'd actually really get the vibe you're looking for.

Forget about dramatic impact and go for feel and smoothness if you get me. The whole thing will sit together better. All imo of course, but you'd be amazed how much of a sort of nonchalance can go in this sort of music.

Like I said, some really great ideas in that track, but all the cool bits sort of get thrown out of focus by some more overdramatic stuff. hope this makes sense and feel free to ignore.

I think with anything deep house related it's really important to keep a very very strong soul thing going on. I mean don't worry about the technical issues and just go by feel.

If you listen to any of the moodymann or theo parrish stuff (which is arguably the ultimate deep house), you'll notice the mixes are all over the place, the stuff is out of key everywhere, it sounds like it's been mixed on 1980's walkman headphones, and the mastering is frankly feckin abysmal. But jesus it's beautiful.

Wow, jt, that's great advice. Thanks very much. I'm going to have a crack at a new mix on that this evening after work. Strip everything down and build it all back again and get as loose as I can with it. I suppose when you start off making tracks you worry about kind of making sure your moving the song along and keeping it interesting, not really realising that what you're doing is maybe hampering the track. Its great to get feedback like this to help you think about what you're trying to achieve.
