Hey Sean - How are things Man?

I'm laughing here, cos my 18mth old started shaking his head when it came on. I think he thought the vocal sample was saying "Nah" rather than not liking it! :)

I think its cool.. but on the stereo plugged into the laptop, the rhythm is all kicks.. it would be nice to have a crunchy big clap / snare - the typical D&B type to keep the tune pushing forward.

Really like the kicks - variations in some breaks would be interesting. You hear a lot of rolls & stuff these days on that type of D&B.

cheers dude.someone else said it about it being all kick so i uploaded the snare and kick track

maybe its just too much of a low snare to work.

yea might have another crack at adding a higher snare in there and see how that works out.

at least its appealing to kids on some level:D

How are things Mindwinder.. Cheers for posting the track!

I'm not really into Trance at all tbh.. so I cant really offer an informed opinion on it Mate. Sounds grand though.. but maybe someone else could give you better pointers.

My only thing - and I dont know the genre really at all.. is that it sounds a little stiff to me. Do they use swing in Trance? I think that it sounds a little too much on the grid & could do with loosening up a bit. A bit more swing or summat might inject a bit more feeling into the groove.

But I dont know about the mechanics of Trance at all.. so hopefully someone like Neuro or Darkjager could offer you a bit of advice. :D

Yeah.. The big fkn dirty D&B snare would be cool. The snare at the moment sounds a bit too IDM if you know what I mean.

Finally finished the 3rd edit of this track and the last for now. I replaced the drum track of the original, edited some of the bass parts and fixed up some mastering issues the best I could. Any feedback or suggestions (particularly for improving the mastering of the track) are much appreciated as always.

i really like the melody but the whole mix is very muddy,no real definition in any of the sounds, they all seem to jus gel into a big sonic ball.

shame really as i really like the melody alot

    what monitors you using

Hi Sean. Had a listen to this and there's some nice ideas going but the drums seem a little safe. All the drums need to be a bit dirtier. Some good amen break drums would sound great in there and really propel the song along.

Thanks for the reply Sean. I've literally been tearing my hair out trying to sort the mastering on this. Just can't seem to get rid of that grainy sound on some parts of it. At the moment the set up I have is pretty basic. I'm using a set of fairly good Sennheiser headphones for the production, for the louder playback I'm limited to using a surround sound system :D

i wouldnt be concerned with the mastering.its the mixdown thats killing it.
it just sounds like the whole track is under a blanket.theres nothing popping out.

have you done much eqing of the sounds or panning

    think this was for me?

yeah im doing a few little edits as we speak.

its all a bit new to me so i dont think im gonna come up with any mad drum patterns for this particular track.just happy to try and create typical d&b beat.

the reason im trying this is to try and figure what give d&b drums so much energy.
and then try and bring some of that into my house tracks.

I've been playing around with the EQ's a bit (the DAW I'm using only has a 10 band equalizer) and I've also been using a feature on it called Stereo Processor.

Sorry Sean, it was indeed intended for you. Sorry I didn't mean safe in terms of the actual rhythm more in terms of sound. Apologies if there was any confusion.

Here's an interesting video on the history of the amen break, a real cornerstone of jungle and drum and bass and maybe might help in terms of understanding where that distinctive jungle sound comes from:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac

The guy's voice is tiny bit monotone but its interesting material none the less.

ah yeah ive seen all those amen documentaries but i figured using an amen break would be a bit too cliche'd.plus i wanted to kinda reconstruct it for myself from my own samples.

but yeah its definitely not on par with modern drum and bass thats out there.not by a long shot

Okay so ive always liked a bit of d&b but never actually attempted to make any of it.

kinda done it as an experiment, first time ive ever atempted this sort of music

mixdown is a bit rouhg and i gotta put the ending on it but for now heres the guts of the track.

comments appreciated(especially about the hats, think they migh be a tad piercing)

Okay so i managed to bash this out today and get it completed.

It took a very melodic turn in the middle which i kinda pleased with even if it does soften the whole track.

Suppose it's about time I threw some of my stuff up here. I hadn't for ages because I still don't really know if mash-ups are considered real music, and because a lot of it isn't very dance orientated...but anyway.

Basically, one of the things I do is a thing called Collidoscope, which is me DJing with a VJing, and we play mashups, and lots of funny samples and stuff. Like a cross between 2manyDJs and Girltalk. Or something. I used to do the mashups live, on different decks, but recently I've started making them on Ableton, because it makes a lot of things possible. I'm still learning about Ableton, and don't know much past cutting up samples and warping them, so there's no effects or panning or anything in these tracks, so that's basically what I'm looking for advice on.

    Shaggy - It Wasn't Me / Jason Mraz - I'm Yours / Jay-Z Empire State of Mind

    (One I just finished today)
    M.I.A - Bucky Done Gun / New Order - Blue Monday / Dizzee Rascal - Pussy'ole (Oldskool)

Beastie Boys - Intergalactic / Alison Krauss - I'll Fly Away (From the O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack)

Mr. Oizo - Flat Beat / The Intro Theme from Babar

Cheers to anyone who listens, and I'd love advice on either effects to throw in, panning, compression, or arrangement, or anything really.
