I think it helps to sit down and listen to DJ sets in the sort of genre you most enjoy and just soak it up and try and work out fundamentals now and then - eventually you can probably create something 'in genre' with confidence as you pull other tracks apart.

I've been looking at Electro (to learn more about swing and percussion) and been learning a fair bit :) - eventually i'll make more Trance, but it will have elements from Electro in the style now.... a constant state of change/musical evolution (that's pretty much what dance music is about)

If you think the vox are odd, mute them and play the track back and deal with what's left and move on!

You were completely right. I removed the vocal and I think its made a real difference to the tune. I think I just fixated on trying to use that vocal that I wasn't seeing the wood for the trees. But after going through two tunes trying to make something work with it I'm going to have to admit defeat for the time being. Here is the updated version:
    http://soundcloud.com/android-78/today-becomes-tomorrow

I suppose in terms of the style thing I think I've just being listening to a load of different styles picking out things I think work and trying to figure out how they done something that when I finish something I'm not really sure what style its really in. And then what's considered a certain style can vary pretty wildly from person to person. Like the Trance I used to listen to when I first had decks (I was really awful!) was the stuff coming out of Hook Records and early Platipus which is probably not an awful lot people's definition of Trance. I was also buying loads of Good Looking Stuff and the funkier end of Moving Shadow. Tbh, having the decks was more an excuse to go to a Record Shop and spend an hour or two checking out tracks and I wasn't really style specific back then which is probably why I couldn't mix for toffee.

But then take a tune like maybe Pete Gust's Nightlife. I've seen it labelled House or Progressive House and I've seen it used in Deep House sets so what is it? I'm going to just make some more time and start listening to more DJ Sets like you suggested to give myself more of an idea what all the different styles are generally made up of. I only started messing around doing this in November and have kind of just being playing around and sitting down to make tunes without an really goals in mind in terms of what style it's going to be. I think setting a goal in terms of what style I want it to be is something I'm going to try doing from now on and see what happens.

Wouldn't it be though if there was a Genre Classification Board. You could hand in your tune and they'd tell you what style your tune is:

    - Next!
    - Em, here's one I finished today
    - It's Two Step!
    - Really? I thought it was going to be Dubstep.
    - Nope. Two Step with Dancehall inflections. Next!

That'd make it an awful lot easier.

Anyways I'll stop ****ting on. Thanks for all the advice over the last while. Its been really appreciated.

The deal with genres can be a nightmare, but only a nightmare if your are trying to break into a scene, appease DJ or label.

If you are wanting to do that, then you need to find the commonality of elements that make that genre. There are many types of Trance (platipus being a great example) so a quick example....

Two full moons and a trout.

What a track, but style aside - it was huge because of the breakdown.

So you could probably just steal elements from the genre you are aiming for and present them well. That would probably help the most to get attention.

Breaks, Breakdowns and the components of each track must have some thought about how they come in (arrangement) if your music is going to stand a chance out there among all the talent out there.

I personally tend to stick to a core of having fun with occasional excursions into learning new tricks for genres - it all adds to the bag!

I suppose that's not really what I'm bothered about. I've no illusions about making some massive tune or getting a label to release anything. The only ambition I really have at the moment is to make tunes that people'll want to listen to on my soundcloud page and respond positively to without me having to spam them to get them to respond. The only reason I wonder about labelling the stuff is just so people will kind of know what they're going to get.

Two full moons and a trout - what a classic! But the ultimate Union Jack track for me is Cactus - absolutely outstanding.

Then forget others :) - and deal with your own inner critic and make music that makes you happy... if something doesn't sound/feel right then remove it/change it :) - eventually you'll be able to make music that makes you happy and as you're human (we hope) will probably appeal to others. The more time you put in, the better you'll be able to get ideas out and manipulate what you hear into a homogeneous piece of music - basically from throwing some parts together to making something that blends well together.

Work really hard at it, the other crap comes later - music is complex enough without worrying about what others think!

I think this is also a skill based & confidence issue. Once you have mastered your tools, you'll be able to write with confidence without lusting after attention (even though it helps/is fun/a boost).

Hey everyone, here's some songs i've been working on.
I'm pretty new to this so there's still alot of mixing and other stuff to be done to them.

Made with a simple Fruity Loops 8,mouse and qwerty keyboard set up.

    Cheers!

Intense dude lol - this stuff reminds me of crazy house parties.

Lots of great programming, I'd only suggest sitting down with a DJ to write as some of the changes are at weird times... so work, some don't.

Lots of effort gone into the programming which is very good :)

    Cheers for the comments Neurojazz.

I 100% agree with you about the timing thing. I've only started properly listening to dance music within the last year and writing stuff for the past couple of months (at least stuff that i'd show to people) so hopefully i'll pick up more things as I go.

That bit in the last tune you posted where the bass proper kicks is in is awesome!

    Hi,

Check out my first song on soundcloud called "Gates & Keys".
The Track consists of a piano hook and a electro bass with your typical kick and snare.

Sorry about this. Last time I'll be clogging the airwaves for a couple of weeks. Big and dumb:

Hope you enjoy. Going to get around to listen to everybody else's tunes now. Thinking of setting up a boards.ie group on soundcloud. Anyone else in? Would be great to get some of the big hitters like Neuorjazz, jtsuited and seannash in amongst some of us plebs. :D

I have thought about this for a while, but would be better to have a sticky with all our soundclouds on and then follow each other - then when something is released on soundcloud we can all hit it (as comments breed comments [good or bad!]) - then share it to a top genre group (like with a thousand plus members) - this would give your tracks a chance of getting more attention as people tend to comment on things already commented on.

    Sound like a plan?

Just put up a 2nd edit of this track. Have hopefully sorted out a few of the problems from the 1st edit (mainly an odd distortion over the track and some issues with eq). Any feedback much appreciated.
