I'm not crazy about the long narrative bits of speech. I like the undercover loop. There's some other great pieces of speech in there - you should be more ambiguous in your use of the speech. And an anti-drug message in your lyrics may not go down well with everyone - might blow their high - and that is unwelcome if you've spent a lot of money on getting that high - if that's the way you feel, maybe you should take that message to straight edge christian rock band (they are actually recruiting - it's one of the few ways to make money in the music business - play in a church sponsored christian rock band in Florida)

New mix of this, been working all day on it.

Got rid of the majority of white noise, and changed up the vocals a good bit.

    Great stuff Steve
Your really churning out some top notch stuff which definetly has your own sound to it

Thanks - was going to ask you - or maybe I did I can't remember.

I'm rebuilding my Ableton on my new machine. The housekeeping on the old one was a real mess - so reconstructing from what I have is a real headache. I should prepare everything so it can be easily ported off to USB stick for the next time my machine blows up. I had actually sampled a really great hi-hat off one of your tracks before it blew up - A distorted sounding open hi-hat.

That's better than the last mix in so many ways - but I preferred it when the under cover loop was much higher.I have everything turned down because it's kind of late. So maybe I'm not hearing it right.

Still I think you're blowing the sample by using too much of it. It shouldn't be about absolute truth or social verity - but an artistic truth. There's a great line where he speaks emotionally and enthusiastically of smoke crack for the first time - just a snippet of that joy in the right place would sound great (no one has to know what he's talking about)

While we're sharing sample packs, I uploaded this today for a different forum so I might as well share it here. Some nice stuff, pretty small though.

@Steve that track is lovely, I love those little reverse hits every now and then. I'd say you could tone down the vocal sample though, in some parts it takes away from the rest of the track, because the bass pads and percussion is lovely. Read someone say in a production interview recently when making a track based around the sample you can actually take out the sample completely after and it'll improve the track, with the sample inspiring the whole track. I obviously don't mean completely take it out, but you get me.

Working on a new track, would really love some input.

    http://soundcloud.com/frankie-grimes-drafts/gemini-draft

I'm trying to make it tech-housey, but just can't seem to get the groove right. It just doesn't seem to have the bounce that most tech-house tracks do...I'm not sure why. I'm really happy with the sample, so just want to make the best of it, because I know there's a decent track in there somewhere.
Defo think theres a good track in there somewhere, keep at it

    Cheers.

About the panning, that's the sample, and I was trying to fix it but failing.

On the original sample, the whole vocal is in the right, and the left is more or less noise. I was playing around with the utility effects in Ableton with no joy. Is there an easy way to take out a whole side of an audio sample and then centre it?

Here's the original track, thought I'd throw it all up on the off-chance you like afro-pop Jazz fusion.

if you give me the sample i should be able to get a usable sample thats mono'd

heres the first few seconds with the whole of one side removed(as much as possible )with the part you want t keep in the centre,in a mix it should be inaudible

Just saw your comment on Soundcloud there and just banged a mono utility on it, should have thought of that in the first place, sounds grand now.

Good stuff,if you have fabfilter pro q you can remove the whole right side and then mono the signal after that and itll get rid of whatever is on the right and leav the left vocal mono'd in the centre

Still on Ableton plugs, should really invest in some decent ones though, the reverb especially is driving me nuts. Using the TAL one but it's not much better.

Heres one I was playing around with last week. It didnt even start off as a song, more just an excuse to try out the vocoder in Live 8. Its basic as hell but I thought it was kinda catchy, sure give it a listen if you get a chance. Of course any feedback is welcome.

Is that all your own work?

I like those grindy dirty basslines (other people don't - because they're not hip enough - I mean the other people, who are too Kool for Skool don't think they're hip enough).

I think if you polished it - made your transitions smoother - some more effects beeps, quick reverse reverbs and dropping the bass out and bringing it back - it could sound really good. And some rock sounding hi-hats and drum fills.

If that's your vocal - great - do more - some weird vocals and lyrics please.

Yeah I wanted to hear that one as well, it was gone before I had a chance to listen to it. Here is one I've put together that I hope is not too dissonant.

    http://soundcloud.com/four-bear/reason-to-leave-demo-mix

Feedback would be great and besides sh1te what genre do you think it would fall into?

One other thing when I'm uploading to Soundcloud the tunes are sounding kind of trembly. Do you guys load up .wav's or mp3s?

Cheers for the feedback, yep its all my own work, never really been one for using samples/ sample packs, nothing wrong with it but its way more fun writing from scratch.

Yep its definately missing a lot of the detail you'd find in modern productions. I dont mind admitting I threw that one together quite quickly. It started out just testing the vocoder in Ableton and grew into a track from there. If I get some time over the weekend Ill try to spice it up a bit. Cheers again for the feedback its much appreciated.

You've got to work the whole thing up into the context of a mix -- and I want a track on the mix -- and yes I will rework it, but I'm not putting breaks every 16th - I want the mid-mix., where the f are we going bit. And the answer is: we're going f'ing nowhere.
