It'd sound better with a 909 kick and snare sample probably and might suit the track more.

That's exactly what it needs. Cheers. I have some 909 samples and I'll substitute them in later tonight. Thanks for listening splitrmx.

Weird techno track I'm working on. My first go recording stuff with my SM57 for a track. All comments appreciated, because there's some parts of this I like, and some that I know don't work.

You should have tried Henessy instead.

Yeah... put in more weird sounds.

Really nice track, drums and bass are very nice. One thing I'd change is the pad chords. Haven't got a piano to hand to work it out, but when the chords change it sounds a little off, not the root notes, but to my ears it sounds like those 2 chords could do with a little more interest, a 7th or something similar.

Seriously quality in your tracks, have you been sending any out? You definitely have a few worthy of a good label!

Also, cheers for the comments on my track. Was thinking of changing the kick alright, will have a go now.

Cheers for the comments lads. As for the pad sound, you could well be right, thing is i havent been able to hear properly in the last month, ive got barotramua in my ears, cant pop them, so it sounds like im constantly on an airplane at the moment, sounds ok to me at the moment, might review it when my ears get back to normal.

Every track that ive posted here in the last few months has got signed so far, bar the travel track (the one that had the trumpet).

The 2 step garage tracks i posted ages ago should be coming out before the summer aswell.

Good few releases in the pipeline so should be a busy year for me!

    Alright guys!

I'm new to the whole music production thing, this is my first attempt at creating anything and it mainly served for finding my bearings and exploring some stuff. I understand that it might not be near the standard of some of you guys!

Anyways any criticisms or advice would be much appreciated as its a learning process:D

You could use a few little sweeps (noise sweeps - short percussion fills between the different bits to make it sound less jarring. Jarring can be fine - you just don't want the whole thing to jar. Try to cut the vocal up so it sits neat on the rythm - like take a snipet, cut it up over a loop of the beat to get it to do something interesting rhythmically. You could make a build up out the word bitch from the sample - start it on loop with the volume low - and, or, use filtering to bring it up

Other people on the board may disagree with my suggestion. They might say I'm being misogynistic. And I might say, they're just being fags. There's no pleasing some people.

You really have to do a mix with a bunch of your tracks. I do one myself - if I had a clue what I was doing.

Thanks for the feedback man! As I said, im a complete noob to this so this is exactly the type of thing I want to hear!

One question for you though, I think i know what you mean when you talk about jarring, but i'm not sure what your suggestion means, do you know any tracks where I could hear the sweeps fairly obviously or some sort of video demonstrating what you mean? As im sure you can appreciate Ableton is a fairly complex tool for new users and ive only really scratched the surface so far.

    Cheers for the feedback:D

If you turn on the radio to a dance music station you'll more than likely hear a sweep within a few seconds. There's a huge variation to how long they can be or what they are. They're used in all styles. Listen to the ministry of sound mega mixes on you tube - it's the quickest way to hear them in lots of tunes.
or some sort of video demonstrating what you mean?

There are lots of tutorials for doing sweeps in Ableton on youtube. A word of warning. I have found out over time, that some of the tutorials over complicate things. Making a white noise sweep actually takes a few seconds - not ten minutes of faffing around.

As im sure you can appreciate Ableton is a fairly complex tool for new users and ive only really scratched the surface so far.

I'll tell you how to make the quickest sweep: Take a cymbal sample. And reverse it. through the sample in just at a point where there's a transition - a bit that sounds jarring - it can make the transition sound smoother.

Making a white noise sweep can be done with nearly any synth. They all have a noise(fuzz) sound. Turn off the volume of the other oscillators (the things that make notes) and turn up the noise. Then by moving the cutoff back and forth you can make the noise appear and disappear - change tone. If you draw an automation line in an ableton track opening the cutoff - you have your basic white noise sweep.

Day 4, version 4. Realising perhaps it doesn't quite fit in on this forum, is there any place for electronic music production rather than dance?

New draft of a track. Pearson Sound etc type style, except it's down at 132. All feedback appreciated. Still more percussion to go in I think, and white noise/impact effects/fills.

Some reversed percussion too - like some reversed snare here and there.

And a few room shaking 808 kicks too.

And think outside the box for your sweeps. Something I've been thinking of. Get some noisy speech from Youtube - reverse it and filter sweep it.

That is a quality tune. I can't wait to hear the full thing. When it comes in after the first break its brilliant.

Cheers mate, weve been stressin out about this track for literally months, had a really hard time trying to get a full track out of it after the first break.

Still liable to change before we send it out i reckon.

It needs to have a bit more going on it I think. It gets a bit repetitive and it desn't really propell itself along. The vocal sample used in the stab is really bright and a bit grating after a while. Hope this helps...

    That sounds great.

You could have done more with the kick on the intro - it's hi-pitch enough you could have done rolls on it. It kind of reminds me of DJ shadow - you should have had the balls to drag it out further before the drop. Remember: making a track is like making love to a beautiful woman.

Steve, I think there is something seriously wrong with the whole thing. For all the undeniable great bits, it's still missing loads (and some of the "missing" is putting in too much, too soon, or too much too much)- I think you are sick. And if I were a medical doctor I would prescribe you a bag load of pills - and a Ministry of sound compilation.

There are more tricks than dropping the kick on the 16th bar.

You know when you figure out all this stuff I'm going to bug you for the knowledge.

Great tune Steve - but you can do a f'lot better. C'mon, you didn't even bother to do a velocity variation on the snare rolls on the intro. Same with that kick - some ghost notes please, at least.
