First thing I've posted in weeks. It needs a few more hours of work. I've been procrastinating too much.

Yes the hi-hats are meant to sound oppressive.

Hi everybody. I've been producing for 2 years but only now have I gotten into mastering, and it feels like i'm banging my head off a wall to try get the balance and clarity I need, which ain't effing happening. This is just a taste of the song I'm working on, adding in a few glitched vocal and sound samples and some stutters along the lines of skrillex, so in your advice could you take this into account. I'm using massive for synth and the mastering vst i'm using is izotope ozone. I'd really appreciate some enlightenment :)

    Cheers,
    Sean

How you could improve it? By building a full track :)

You really have to stretch it out and throw the kitchen sink at it.

Havent posted up something here in a while or made a track for that matter.

Anyways been working on a new project, trying to get a kinda factory gritty techno sound.

Stephen - think you need to step back a notch on the kick - you're over maximizing your sounds.

And Steve..........I think you really need to think about hi-hats.

Cheers for the comments and advice, will take it all on board when i go to make the finished version of the track.

Made this today, set out to limit myself to 6 hours to make a complete track and this is what i came up with, pretty full on techno again.

It's a good track - it's got something in there.

Though, you're mastering too loud - I played it through my crappy speakers and it caused them to crackle on the bass - no commercial recording will do that to my speakers. Not just it's too loud - but you're losing clarity on lots of things - I played it back the second time and could hear lots of stuff that was lost at the higher volume. The muddy reverbs do create really interesting - I can't think of anything to describe it - things. You should also think about running hi-hats and rides that don't have reverbs and you pitch up/down shorten/lengthen

I like a lot of it as is - I tried to steal it with the download helper but it didn't work.

I made this over the course of a weekend. Took about 2 days to make with the third day consisting mostly of arrangement, cutting and dropping, time-stretching samples and re-editing others. I used about 45 different samples to make this. Two samples I cut from two different 1940s episodes of looney tunes cartoons.

The sample "Hope your all enjoying this little ho-down" is from a Merrie Melodies cartoon by Warner Brothers entitled "Hollywood Steps Out" circa 1941. The Daffy Duck sample is from a 1943 Merrie Melodies short called "Yankee Doodle Daffy" In order to get these from video and into my track I had to extract the audio from the video and cut out the parts I wanted. My vision and goal with this track was to make it sound as old as I could and keep it sounding raw and have vintage break-beat kind feel to it.

That is why I chose to use unprocessed drums, I feel it gives it the raw and old feeling I was after.

I love to hear vocal samples cut up by DJs in music and I also love break-beat and turntablisim so this is why I wanted to do it. Much of it was inspired because I listened to
DJ shadow's album "Endtroducing" (1996) which only up until awhile ago I was told the entire thing was made of samples. Hearing that I thought I wanted to make my own sample based track.

it's pretty good for house. But turn the hi hat down a bit. The kicks a bit to loud but ok. I like the samples and synths.
Overall I would say about 7-8/10

    Not bad.

The hats are fine as they are. Useless feedback.

I was just stating my opinion.
You can disagree with it. But it's not useless. Get off your elitist high horse.

By calling it useless. What's the point of that? The whole point of the thread is for the people to give feedback on other people's tracks. If people think their opinion is going to be dismissed as useless they're not going to bother posting again. There's no point in being an arsehole about it...

Well seeing how this 14 year old was the only person to comment on the volumes of the kick and hi hats and no one else mentioned them being to loud I'd see it as a useless remark. This is something a lot of unexperienced producers ALWAYS mention when listening to a track. The track in question has been leveled fine in terms of its kick and hat sounds. Posting a comment like this will put doubt in the producers mind and may go onto to make further unnecessary level changes to an already perfect mix.

In fairness a lot of tracks get posted without anyone making comments on them. That doesn't mean everyone thinks the track is perfect, they might just no be bothered to make a comment.

Good mixing, but poor song choice

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,278 ✭✭✭mordeith

Not really my bag man. Apart from the sidechained lead the rest sounds even cheesier than the original. Still I can appreciate the work that went into it.

Just what the world needs - another Haddaway remix

I think it is worth remixing, but you could have probably have done a more interesting version. There's no surprise in there.

Did you have stems for it?

If you post the stems - I'll give it a thumbs up and post it on my facebook
