It's a really good track. I really like the arpeggiated lead that comes in for the second half of it. I would agree with mordeith though about the sidechaining being a little extreme. It could do with being a little less aggressive
thanks rob I appreciate you listening to it and i took your and mordeiths advice I lowered the ratio of the sidechain its sounds better now.

I like this. It has a John Carpenter movie feel about it. What synths did you use for it?
Oberheim SEM, Roland System 101+102, Nord Modular, RSF Kobol Expander.

Cool, were they hard to come by? Actually wouldn't mind picking up a hardware one at some point

That's pretty sick man. Like the glitchy style and the programming on the percussion. Only negative I have is that the main synth gets a tad repetitve. Only a small gripe. Overall a very upfront sound.

Sounds really good overall. I really like the bass and synth at the start. I'm not sure about the glitchy bass drum effect coming in on the second half, i kind of find it a bit irritating and distracts from the rest of the track which sounds deadly

How's it going all? Redid a track from the weekend. Here's the new version. Any feedback would be great.

    Thanks

Cool track man, interesting sounds goin on there. The lead synth that comes in after the bassline is a little piercing at first, maybe start it off with a little less volume and work up to the current volume or perhaps filter it in...good sounds in all!

I'm liking this more on second listen but I have a few suggestions that you are free to ignore :). I think you should shorten the kick a little as when they are triggered close together the sound gets a bit muffled and muddy. The panning on the arpeggiated sequence is a nice idea although I wouldn't pan extreme left and right. You have a great noise that plays for about a second at 1.26, you should definitley work that in more for a more aggressive feel to the track.

Thanks mordeith. There's a lot of good advice there. I actually didn't really notice that with the kick. I'll definitely go back and have a look at that. Thanks for taking the time to listen

That link doesn't work but I found it by going to your Soundcloud profile.
The start is really nice and I like the fx on the vocals (reminds me of Fatboy slim). I think the kick needs more presence though, as it is it seems more suited to a minimal tune. I wouldn't mind hearing a straight up 4/4 house version after the white noise sweep ends at the 1 minute mark

Thanks for the feedback lad. I hear what you're saying about the kick, I think I might have to much reverb on something that's why the kick isn't jumping out as much. I'm trying to get away from the 4/4 house stuff atm just getting bored of making it tbh.

Try to set yourself a real challenge - make something with no kick.

I made this first without any drums in it, then with the drums in it, it doesn't sound to kicky. http://soundcloud.com/scoob89/scoob-wandering-around

Have you tried listening to the kick by itself.

Something I've only discovered recently. The 909 kick, which I used to think was terrible. If I just use the sample, and do very little with it, and make sure it's not peaking, then is sounds really good.

If you're not getting a push that your looking for, maybe you have everything up too loud.

Try not to have too much reverb going on down in the lower bass. It never really adds anything down there. Actually that's not completely true. I've been working on something recently where I've taken a sample from a 60s samba record, and filtered off all the highs. And I can tell you, my neighbours really f'ing hate that sample. It's got a smushy samba boom push.

So, ultimately, I have no idea what I'm on about.

Really nice. Like the almost asian feel to the high pitch arpeggiation. I think there's a bit too much lower frequencies going on though in the bass. It was very oppressive listening on headphones, a constant deep hum.

Speaking of kicks though, here's an epic techno track from Umex with no kick

The intro to this is pretty epic but I'm not a fan of the main track itself. Having said that you have some pretty sweet 303 sounds in there. Are they samples or are you generating them yourself from an actual 303 or plugin? If the latter then you could churn out a nice acid track :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 116 ✭✭narwhalthe

Cheers mordeith! The hihats and cymbal in the main track have been brought down since and I need to figure out a form. It's pretty weird haha.

Nah no 303 unfortunately :D. Purely a few different single note samples and I used sampler on them.

Nice string progression on the breakdown. Epic.
