The best way for a charity to be run is like a business, accounts should be published and every cent accounted for.

People skills (animals skills, of course a given) should not be in the negative. It's not in the animals best interests if volunteers/workers are odd or stand offish.

They all do great work. I know from personal experience that dogdindistress & cottage rescue do GREAT work. Drogheda animal rescue are also great along with last hope animal charity.

A Dogs Life http://www.adogslife.ie/ The site is only being worked on at the moment but it gives an idea of what they do. They also have a very active presence over on PetsIreland http://petsireland.invisionzone.com/index.php?showforum=7 where there are loads of before and afters in the Good News section. All run by volunteers with full time jobs but overall organised by one woman. Pound now has the lowest PTS rate of any council run pound in the country at 7%.

Also http://www.orchardgreyhoundsanctuary.com/ which is again run by one woman on her own. She does amazing work and even though it's on a small scale all her dogs live in a home environment which I love and she's so welcoming, it's a great place to visit for an afternoon just to hang out with the dogs.

    Hey guys,

i'm sorry I had the poll opened already with 8 charities already on it to vote for. Now that's not to say that any of teh above charities aren't as deserving because they are just as wonderful and just as deserving as any of the ones already on the poll.

But to avoid a list as long as my arm (i have very long arms :P) I put up the poll with the first 8.

The problem with doing something like this unfortunately is there will always be one more charity but unfortunately we can only help one at the moment and hopefully give that one we chose a small bit of help.

At a later date perhaps we can organise charity sponsered dog walks or other events to raise money for another charity. It's a long summer folks :)

I'd say that €50k is only a drop in the ocean for them - that's probably only enough to keep them going for a month! Seriously!

Límerick Animal Welfare's running costs are about €30k a month, and they got a €20k grant from the Department of Agriculture last year. Again, a great help, but still far less than the group needs to fundraise each month in order to survive.
