Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yup the majority of reviews are due to hit tomorrow, so there's plenty of time to read them before buying the game. No conspiracy (review embargoes are a fairly common thing in the industry) - I've seen some of the review scores and they're all good. GamePro just released theirs, they gave it 90%.

Oh and Cold|Fusion, thanks for stealing the game I spent the last 3 years working on...

A few reviews coming in now anyway.

    http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/prototype

Pretty favourable so far and the user score is quite high

I was looking forward to this but to be honest that 7.5 review read more like a 4.5. The problems they listed sound pretty annoying.

The video on that IGN piece looks good - looks like a splice of Bionic Commando, Crackdown and Wolverine.

Read to me like it was marked down for technical problems, the score remains pretty high due to it being a fun game...

IGN EU give it an 8.5 and even comment on the artwork, while IGN point out weaknesses in graphics saying the building view is pretty terrible. Blandness is an issue for them. Both say it's alot of fun though and the street battles are supposed to be epic. So surely that's more important then engine glitches. Even GTAIV had 'em. Might be picking it up also. About 20 hours gameplay too if you do everything.

well it's just my opinion but this
The storyline involves 31 missions including everything from simple seek and destroy affairs to stealthy infiltrations to escort missions and massive boss battles. Most of these missions are standard in design. In fact, if you've played many open-world games, you've probably played identical copies of these in the past. And since repetition is oftentimes the name of the game here, you can be sure you'll be doing uninspired tasks over and over again.

doesn't strike me as sounding like an endorsement of a fun game. Then add in the fact that you can't really damage your environment and i can't really think of a reason to buy this and not just go back and replay crackdown.

There's not many of these kind of games that don't have generic missions, even the lofty GTA falls foul of that.

The fun is in what you do the rest of the time you're playing in the sandbox.

Yeah, now that I think about it, not being able to damage the environment sucks a bit. But as regards repetition, GTA has this in spades so that wouldn't bother me too much. Plus every other review has said it's fun. However after reading that IGN review again, the thing which stood out was the poor draw distance and structues popping in and out. Now this sort of thing annoys me and is a deal breaker no matter how fun a game is. IGN AU gave it 85% and Gamepro give it a 90% and didn't even mention this. And draw distance/popup/popin is one of the most obvious things to spot in a game. Cheatcodecentral did spot the popin though but said it happens vertically when falling from a building but the draw distance in the horizon is pretty good. Hmmm...I think I will have to wait until there is more gameplay vids posted on youtube or a demo before I decide on this one.

    Eurogamer review now online:
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/prototype-review

Pretty disappointing, IMO. Looks like a rental.
    7/10

    7/10
without mentioning the technical problems, i'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Doubt i'll find out though, after reading this description of a boss fight i've decided to give the game a miss
nearly half an hour of slog against a Who's Who of what not to program: flying blobs that stun, respawning tentacles, unpredictable wave attacks, and inconsistent damage conditions among them.

Eurogamer also gave inFAMOUS 7/10 which I found to be pretty great, so I'll still be buying prototype

Hmm, IGN gave it a 7.5, which is GOOD compared to the breakdown, the mean average of which is, like 6.8.

    5.5 on graphics, sheeeeeit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,971 ✭✭✭Flaccus

Yeah, but IGN AU gave it an 8.5 on graphics :D

Still the game seems to have it's problems. Will wait for some videoreviews.

Funny that Eurogamer don't mention the graphics (well apart from saying it's less visually striking than infamous)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭FreeOSCAR

Mention of it under one of the screenshots on page on of the Eurogamer review.

Like IGN they say the draw distance isnt only bad, its terrible.

that'll teach me to ignore image captions.

I went for Red Faction rather than this, destructible environments, plus RF has good multiplayer apparently (Prototype has none).

So how come Prototype is averaging 87 on Metacritic compared to 85 for RF? Both games seem to be appealing to the third-person shooter/actioner brigade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,971 ✭✭✭Flaccus

Not enough Metacritic reviews in yet. Score will go down. What put me off Red Faction was the engine. It looked about 5 years old. And terrible vsync issues and slowdown, at least on the demo.

Yeh the physics engine looked really outdated :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭djkeogh

was looking forward to this one but am a bit put off it now by the reviews. Might sit tight and save my money and pick it up when it hits a better price point.

i think we should wait for the video review instead of reading this very disappointing article reviews i have a big hope for this game to be good :D
but tbh sometimes i don't want to trust reviewers anymore i bought infamous coz i thought this game is totally amazing coz the reviewers gave it 9.0 but it's just a ok game for me yes the graphics and story is good but there's something boring about infamous which i don't like...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,971 ✭✭✭Flaccus

Hopefully a gamespot and gametrailers video review will be up soon.

It looked like an old source game. Very bland textures and poor lighting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭FreeOSCAR

But no game has better Physics on a console.

Physics is more than destructible environments.
