I was bannned for drink driving almost 5 years ago and I've paid a heavy price. I won't be caught again - it's completely not worth it.

Anyway, my prob. is insurance. I got back on the road 12 mths. ago and my insurance was 2100 euro!

Does anyone out there know where to look for cheaper insurance or any Ins. Company that deals with drunk driver convictions??

2100 is pretty much the same as any 18 year old would be paying with a full license on the road for the first time so you'll just have to imagine that you're 18 again :P

try xsdirect, I'm not entirely comfortable with the way they operate, but if you reckon you're a safe driver, then they might be worth a look. google or search here to find out how they work.

    McCarthy Insurance - 025 31199

But all things considered, €2100 doesnt seem too bad to me

I dunno about specific companies but you could try ways to bring down the policy.
-Higher excess (or go third party)
    -Park the car somewhere secure
or you good try and do an advanced driving course with the IAM. This can help bring down the premium.

Your problem is that you are still within 5 years of being convicted. Once you pass the 5 year mark, you can honestly say "no" to the question every insurance company asks at renewal time which is something like "have you been convicted of ..... in the last 5 years?"

You're only back on the road less than a year, so you have no NCB (no claims bonus) yet. Come renewal time your quote will be a lot less than what you are paying now. Make sure you ring all insurance companies and brokers to get the best deal.

There is an insurer, ARB, who will offer quotations for people with a DD conviction. They take the attitude that most people who are caught are acceptable risks because they wouldn't want to go through that experience again. Most brokers deal with them and they won't talk to the public directly.
One poster mentoned that you can forget about the conviction after 5 years but a lot of insurers leave the question open ended by asking 'have you ever'...................? In that situation, you are obliged to disclose

Unkel, I was convicted on 18/04/2004, so it's over 5 years now. I'Ve been driving for a year come 18th this month, so i recon thats a 1 year NCB?

So can I truthfully say no convictions in last 5 years, and one years NCB?

In the case of "Have you ever..." they shut up shop immediately if you say yes.

And as someone else pointed I can assure you I will never be done for drink driving again, so would be a far lesser risk now than before.

They must be aware of this fact but are just abusing your history for excessive gain. It's daylight robbery.

AAIreland might be worth a look. They do much of looking round for you. I've found them very good.

Yes. It's the truth, isn't it?

I wonder are they allowed to ask that legally? Does anybody know?

the reason we ask have you ever had any accidents claims convictions or are there any pending is because even if it was a conviction 6 yrs ago and u got a ban for 2 yrs and u just didnt bother getting insurance the last few years ur conviction only begins on your insurance when you start back driving ie-when u go on cover for the first tym again so even though endorsment has expired its only began for you on your insurance.

    axa will quote you.

Even if they don't ask:"have you ever.." would not a new insurer have access
to your history with other companies?Even know from from the high premium, despite a few NCBs?

Insurance companies only talk to each other on matters of fraud.

If the question is 'Have you ever...? disclose it. If the question is 'In the last 5 yrs, have you..?, then you can honestly state No. Even with the open ended version, many insurers will treat it as spent (providing it was not linked to a serious accident).
