Given the claims of strong party democracy from the greens and losing so many councillors because of the actions of the TDs, I have a feeling the trouble will come from within the core of the party. It won't be long before Gormley has a serious problem on his hands.

this is appearing highly likely, one way or the other. The party faithful were very quiet in the run up to the elections for fear of rocking the boat, but I'd imagine once the dust settles a bit, that will change. A defeat of that magnitude for the Greens seems a little out there, but if that happened, I'd say they'd br gone by the end of the week.

FF may lose 4-5 seats on Louth County Council down from 9, Greens may gain 1, possibly 2 but may lose one in Monaghan.

Good. Serves them right for abandoning their principles though.

Up to 10 former Progressive Democrats appear highly likely to take seats. These include Barry Saul, Mogie Maher, Tom Welby, Bridget Teefey, Rose Brennan, Mary Mitchell O Conner, Declan McDonnell, Terry O Flaherty, Serina Campbell, and Jim Cuddy. Former PD TD Mae Sexton is in, while Victor Boyhan is also fighting for a seat in Blackrock, and the fact that he is the only Independent on the ticket may well work to his advantage. Equally Brendan Gilmore, and Peter Merrigan are on course to take Town Council seats. Not a bad days work for my old party's candidates.

Former PD Mags Murray also eems likely to sneak a seat for FF.

FF seats may be halved in Dublin. Greens may lose 7 councillors in County Area - a wipeout!

there appears to be a lot of independants doing well. i'm not sure what the reasons would be for this, other than maybe a tiredness from voters of the usual faces and parties

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,225 ✭✭✭Chardee MacDennis

independents are doing well because a lot of people cant bring themselves to vote for any party, as they are all useless...

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

Independents tend to do well in locals as they can make a stand on very specific issues. Some of those Independents are also former PD councillors.

it just apperas to me that there is an extra number of independants doing well this time around over others.

the ex-PD effect certainly has a role in that I'd say. ANyone got any figures on how many ex-PD's are standing as Ind?

Does anybody know how the tallies/results are going in cork south central?

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

FF's Mary Fitzpatrick(Maurice Ahern was chosen ahead of her in Dublin Central) has been elected to Dublin City Council on the first count in Cabra/Glasnevin. She was the first candidate from the party to gain election. Good on her. :)

    In Dublin West Mullhudart constituency:

Socialist Party: 1 seat - Ruth Coppenger
Fine Gael: 1 seat - Dennison
Fianna Fail: 1 seat - McGuinness

Who has done better Labour or FG?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,148 ✭✭✭✭KnifeWRENCH

    Cork County Council, Mallow Area:
Long serving councillor Dan Joe Fitzgerald (FF) elected. The biggest talking point is that a 25 year old Independent first time candidate, John Paul O'Shea, is currently 2nd in the poll. He looks like he'll be taking the place of Labour's Jerry Mullally.
The remaining 3 seats look like they'll be going to FG candidates Tom Barry, Tom Sheahan and Noel O'Connor.

    Predicted outcome:
3 Fine Gael 2 Fine Gael
    1 Labour
    1 Fianna Fail
    1 Independent

    Mallow Town Council:
Excellent result for Labour - they have the top 3 candidates. James Kennedy, Ronan Sheehan and Jerry Mullally have all been elected. (I'm very pleased at this because my uncle is a member of Labour and did a lot of work canvassing for them. :))
Fine Gael's Noel O'Connor has won the 4th seat.
