    Cork County Council, Mallow Area:

    .....

The remaining 3 seats look like they'll be going to FG candidates Tom Barry, Tom Sheahan and Noel O'Connor.

    Predicted outcome:
    3 Fine Gael
    1 Fianna Fail
    1 Independent

Well I got that wrong! :o Labour's Ronan Sheehan has become the 3rd candidate elected (after Fitzgerald and O'Shea.) He must have done very well on transfers.

George Lee walked away with that by-election seat anyway. Predictable enough I suppose.

Knowing Mallow relatively well (though not so much since I left there in 1993) that'll have been the GAA transfers coming through as well as people out that side of town being happy to throw their second preference at the most local candidate (Quartertown isn't a million miles away from Joe Sherlock's core stomping ground, I'm sure Sean was out knocking on doors out there).

Yeah I'm sure Sean Sherlock did a lot of work for him there alright. I wonder why Sheehan has come out ahead of Mullally though? Mullally was the sitting councillor - I think he came in when Sherlcok went to the Dail.
It all means Sheehan has been elected to both county and town councils, whereas Mullally will probably only get the town seat as there are 3 strong Fine Gael candidates (Barry, O'Connor and Sheahan) in the running for the last 2 county seats.

Obviously we won't know for sure until the counts are finished but from those figures it looks like Mallow Town will be:

4 Labour (Kennedy, Mullally, Sheehan and Lucey)
2 Fine Gael (O'Connor and Dempsey)
    1 Fianna Fail (Fitzgerald)
    1 Sinn Fein (O'Regan)
    1 Independent (Griffin)

Glad to see O'Regan retaining his seat and seeing all 4 Labour candidates doing so well. I was worried because I had it in my head that there were only 5 seats - 9 makes a lot more sense.
I'm surprised that Johnny Bottles is doing so well!

Is there a nice easy to use concise website with some kind of map so you can see who's been elected to which Local Council ? Or something like that ?

    www.southdublin.ie

Can't say the same for other CCs, but that site has been excellent all day.

Big congratulations to 26 year old Dermot Looney (Labour) who got the fourth seat in Tallaght Central in his first ever election.

Thanks. RTE actually have something up on their site with some fancy little graphics. It's not an easy site to navigate what with the poxy ads.

Horrible turn out . Average of about 50% ? I wouldn't know what's classed as a "good" turn out but what where the other 40 odd percent of people doing ?

Less than 200 votes between Looney and sitting clr. Mick Murphy on the first count.

It was 56.4% in 2004 and 48.75% in 1999 so this is around average and not a bad turnout tbh. A fair percentage of people couldn't be bothered voting except for General elections and more again couldn't be bothered voting in general.

In European terms 50% is actually quite good compared to the likes of the circa 20% turnouts in Poland and Slovakia in 2004. Limerick city results are just done, 17 seats in total
    FG - 8 (8 from 8 candidates, 100% success rate)
    LAB - 4 (4 from 6 candidates, 66% success rate)
    FF - 1 (1 from 7 candidates, 14% success rate)
SF - 1 (first SF councillor in rather a significant time)
    IND - 3

The Greens have lost ALL their Dublin seats, city and county. By my reckoning that is 8 seats - 1 on DCC, 4 in DL and Rathdown and 3 in Fingal.

The Greens do not have a single seat in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway or Waterford.

thats incredibly bad news. no like really really bad news. much worse than i would have predicted for them. i think we can expect some Greens to be out and about in the media today, talking abot what happens next

Brilliant news :D. I think you can add Carlow county council to that as well ;)

I am also surprised at the extent of it but it makes sense. FF can afford a large drop in its core vote and just do badly. Small parties, as the PDs implosion showed, cannot afford to annoy the electorate and go below that 4-6% that keeps them in a race. Once they do, any transfers that come won't help them. Labour in 1997 went from 33 to 17, a fair warning of how the voting public can and will punish parties.

EDIT : Forgot about South Dublin - another 2 seats. Mary White claims that the Greens' performance was expected.

Speaking of the PDs, former members seem to have done very well for themselves. Over 20 cllrs have been elected from their gene pool. Goes to show you how poisonous the PD title was.

also shows how blinkered the electorate is as I'd assume that many of the candidates still hold many of the belief/ideologies that they had when they were PD's!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,978 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I suspect its not the PD tag that was the problem rather its the association with FF thats been the issue. Stand by for a rash of ex-Greens to do okay next time out.

eu dublin - hopin for joe, but if forced to stick money on it, would prob say mary lou. she's only woman with half a chance and could well get the female mckenna n de burca transfers. they could split 50 50 wit joe but. reckon ryan will stall on 15/16% and finish 5th. here's hopin 4 joe anyway.

There is a real danger to the government if the Greens grow despondent, which they should.

That is the main danger, FF will be happy in a way with the limited damage of a 24% taking, and the fact that Fine Gael only look like getting 32/33%
