Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good value lens for taking distance shots? Type of use would be taking pics at the zoo, wildlife photography and seascapes. The camera is a Canon Eos 450D.

Sorry if I sound a bit ignorant but I'm not a photographer, i'm trying to surprise herself.

    Cheers

How much do you want to spend?

Sigma 70-300mm is a decent and cheap zoom.

Loads of info here on the sigma, just do a search for it in this forum. I've one of them ordered. Budget really is the key to choosing a lens I find. Try to get the best one you can with the budget you're on.

There are two sigma 70-300's , the APO version is generally considered to be the best value even though it's slightly more expensive than the standard version.

I did a search and there were mixed views on the Sigma, although a lot of people seem very happy with them.

Looking on here though the equivalent canon lens is only £15 more, is it worth buying canon?

I got the Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 a while ago myself. Image quality is fair but it does the job.
That being said, it has quite a reach when coupled with a 2x adapter. Decent lens for the price.

The general consensus seems to be that, overall, a Canon zoom lens will be sharper than the Sigma 70-300 apo dg macro. However, the macro feature is really worth having, if you enjoy natural history or photographing flowers.

Questions come up about the Sigma every few months here and I am very pleased I bought it just a year ago. This might be helpful:

Having spent just over 199 euro on one last year, and considered it good value, I'm amazed to see that Conns have it now for a reduced price.

Cheers guys for your help, I think i'll get her the Sigma 70-300 DG APO Macro, she wants more capability for distance shots and also likes to do some close up work also so it sounds like this lens will cover all the bases for the time being.
