I've noticed you seem to be a bit of a N900 fan boy alright :D
What makes you think Android will dwarf it in terms of apps in the future? Surely if they are both running on Linux Kernels, it shouldnt be too difficult to port Android apps to the maemo os?

Just found this link to a blog where a dude does a serious amount of comparison between the N900 and other mobiles, some very interesting(some a bit ott) reading in it. http://cool900.blogspot.com

Billymitchell, maemo as a platform will approach end of life (to a certain extent) with the introduction of the new MeeGo handsets. While maemo 5 will go on as a community project and there may be some support from Nokia, it won't be a long term commercial endeavour and will end up being more of a hackers fancy..similar to how the 770 (turned an old 770 on last night, web browsing still surprisingly good) and n800/810 went.

But..that aside, the app library has ballooned in recent months, there's loads of useful apps in there and the multitasking and contact/im integration is superb and unrivalled.

It's one of the best phones/devices I've ever owned!

Thanks for the info FunkyFlea. So MeeGo wont be able to run on N900 or is that not the plan?

Ah, there's the question. There's no definitive answer from Nokia yet. Technically, the device will be able to run it. The question is whether Nokia will support it.

Tom Dunne is corrext. N900 is currently being used as a test / development device for MeeGo, so it will work, but may not be officially supported by Nokia.

    aw crap. :(

less than 24 hours after getting my n900 back i seem to have somehow enabled and changed the 5 digit lock code and have no idea what it is.

i don't understand it, it's not the default 12345 and i only ever used 2 numerical codes on anything for the last 10 years and it's neither of them nor any combination or variation of them that i can think of and i've tried about 100 times at this stage (it doesn't lock you out no matter how many times you try it).

i've seen some pgeon english guides on resetting it with a usb cable and some software, but nothing that looks like a proper guide in actual english that would make enough sense to follow.

i've seen mention of a bug that affects the lock code too, but that might just be PEBKAC related (as mine may be).

can someone point me in the right direction for a fix that doesn't require a total reset if possible?

    thanks. :)

You've had it less than 24hrs, reflash would be the simplest option tbh. I know it's a pain but you know it will definitely work at least.

    yeah, figured as much. :(

do you know of a good current guide to re-flashing with the latest FW in Win7 or XP that isn't written in English by someone who doesn't quite speak it? :o

every guide i can find either seems to be out of date or written in pigeon English for some reason. :(

I did it on a Win7 machine the other day using this guide. Straight forward enough.

Re Fmms - I have a feeling that Fapn is no longer necessary to set it up since PR1.2. I certainly don't have an APN set up for Fmms in my settings but I don't remember how I did it  I know that I trawled through about 150 pages on Maemo before I got it to work. Maybe try deleting the new APN and Fmms and reinstalling Fmms to begin again from scratch?

    thanks.

anyone know how i find out what firmware I have on it (since i can't get into it) or if re-flashing with a different one will adversely affect it?

don't want to kill it totally by doing something silly by not asking. :o

I think you go to menu > settings > about product

I would stick with the same firmware you have.

i need to re-flash it because the phone lock is on when it starts up, meaning i can't use it, so i can't get into it to find out what firmware is already on it. :(

here's a foxer. i got two of them at the same time and the missus has the other one and they're both from the same place with the same updated firmware on them and under version, hers says "10.2010.19-1" but with nothing else after it, but that gives me all 5 of these possible options.

does that mean I can use any of them, or do i have to get a specific one?

it was shipped directly from Nokia in Canada afaik, bu tit has a € symbol on the keyboard, so i think it's at least an EU model, if not a UK one.

grrr, why are these things never simple? :(

Your the mod of Apple Media devices, but love the Nokia N900. Surely there must be a conflict of interests there. I'm surprised you are not telling me to hold out for the new Iphone... ;)

Thanks for the info guys, think I'll treat myself to a N900 once the old paycheck comes through. Any place I can get one cheap other than ebay?

Just realised that I am due an upgrade in about 2 weeks, so I might try get a swap for a new HTC desire. Not sure if that will fly though.
Otherwise, i'd like to try get one for about 250. I'd struggle to justift paying more than that for 'just' a phone!!

Couple of things you could try

    1. Does it have a product code under the battery you could check on nokia's support site?

    2. Did you have an SSH server installed that might allow you to SSH in and check something from the command line (maybe /proc/version)?

    3. When it's powered on try connect it via USB to your PC with Ovi suite \ Nokia Suite and see what it shows up as.

it's 0560826 and it shows up as "Version: 10.2010.19.1" just like it does on my wifes one, no numbers after it.

nope, just got it back from the menders having a cracked screen replaced so there's hardly anything on it. unless angry birds has a secret SSH client on it, i'm fecked. :(
    matrim wrote: »

when i plug it in when it's on, i just get "Nokia N900 connected in non-compatible USB mode", but if i plug it in whilst off and holding the U key, I get a new driver installed for "Nokia BB5 ADL Loader USB Generic".

This is on a Win7 x64 box at home using PC Suite v7, but it was coming up slightly differently on my 32bit work PC today (also with PC Suite v7). Just tried it on a 32bit win7 laptop I have here and it's showing the same as the x64 one in update and regular modes.

I think I'm just going to flash it with the UK firmware and be done with it.

    wish me luck. :)

EDIT: guess nobody wished me luck. :(

nothing bad, just didn't seem to work.

followed the guide to the letter, but all I get is this:

    any ideas?

the guide says to type in "flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1.203.1_PR_COMBINED_203_ARM.bin -f"

    but the screengrab shows "flasher-3.5 -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1.203.1_PR_COMBINED_203_ARM.bin -f -R"

i tried both, but they both have the same output.

EDIT EDIT: he also says to go via the start menu, but the screengrab shows a cmd prompt window. seems to be working now that I've opened a cmd prompt and am running it directly from there.

    NOW wish me luck!

EDIT EDIT EDIT: FCUK YEAH!!! :D:D:D

it worked, thanks be to the holy zombie jebus! :)

also, FYI, just did the first part of the guide, didn't flash the eMMC and that was enough and although I think I've lost the few apps I installed, all my contacts, data, sms and calendar etc. are intact so a result all round! :D

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT:now i just need to do a little bit of hackamyjiggy nonsense to find out what I actually set the pin code to in the first place. :)

seemingly with the right apps installed there's commands you can do from the terminal to get the (still in place but de-activated) encrypted lock code out of the phone and then a bit of software called 'john the ripper' can decrypt the PIN from that value in a couple of minutes. bit busy today though, so it might be the weekend before i manage it.

    Anyone having trouble with Skype?

I ring home quite a bit using Skype and I am finding at times I am missing a lot of what the other person is saying. It seems to come and go in waves during the course of the conversation. The other person can here me fine.

At first, I thought it was my internet connection (using WiFi), but I called today using the laptop, and the quality was fine.

The phone has been a little sluggish, so I am wondering if this is what is causing problems with my Skype calls.

I don't use skype but haven't noticed any issues with SIP (although I only use it every few weeks). Have you tried overclocking before making the skype call?

If it's sluggish maybe something as simple as a restart might help (if some app has a memory leak)

Also, Extended Call Log is great isn't it ;)

Yeah, I might try making a call with the laptop, then switch directly to the N900 to see if there is a difference.

The more I think of it, the more I think I will overclock it.

You should! Setup some of those widgets to set the clock speed. I posted a "How To" a few pages back.

Well guys and girls, it's been a good ride but am leaving the N900 for...

    ...iPhone 4.

Never thought I'd see the day but i've come to the conclusion that content is king and the N900 while being one of the best devices I've ever owned, just isn't as exciting as it once was. So you might see it on adverts.ie very soon..

I could very well end up coming back with my tail between my legs (and I just got an unlimited data package now which is a shame I didn't get this when I first got the N900 but how and ever). Depending on how the iPhone goes, not sure if I can see myself going back to Nokia until they sort out what direction they want to go as far as handsets and operating systems are concerned.

    :)

    Traitor.

    :D

Ah no, each to their own.

I see your point completely, everybody has differing needs in their handset. I firmly believe that if I was commuting on the train every day, the N900 wouldn't be for me. However, as I drive to work 25-35 minutes each way, I use the FM transmitter all the time.

I have to be honest, my next phone will most likely be an Android, but it might be a bit early for me to convince Herself that I need a new phone. :D

Yeah I have also gone the way of the apple. The n900 was one of the best phones I ever owned but the lack of decent apps was the final nail in the coffin. But I will be keeping one of my n900s (other one on adverts at the moment) in the hope that it finally does become an iPhone killer.
