Tether away on old plans up to 1Gb free, then start selling your car for anything over that!

    Rockin'. Thanks

Does anyone know if it's possible to download and install the carrier file on the iPhone without upgrading to 3.1.3? I don't want to lose my jailbreak for tethering but wouldn't mind being able to tether occasionally nonetheless.

    I did it last night.
Cancelled the prompt for new update then accepted prompt of new carrier file. Working fine

Did you not have to restart your phone? I thought you had to turned it off for the new settings to take? Would you not lose the jailbreak by turning the phone off?

Great thanks. Tried the same the other night but I wasn't prompted to download the carrier. I updated itunes (man, I hate itunes) to the latest version just now and I was prompted to download the carrier when I cancelled the iPhone update.

I've been tethering for a few months now using the jellysms carrier file on the advance175 plan. I recently switched to the advance150 plan with unlimited data usage only to discover that o2 planned to charge €12.50 for tehering on the new plan.

My question is if I continue to just use the jellysms carrier file will o2 know that I'm tethering?

My iphone is jailbroken running 3.0 firmware. My APN is 'internet'

I phoned O2 today to ask them about tethering and was advised to buy a 'bolt on' for tethering as if I didn't the cost is 5C PER KB!!!!!!!! I mentioned that I have unlimited internet access on my price plan and she said that that doesn't apply if you want to use it for tethering.

SERIOUSLY!!! What the hell do they think they are playing at?????

If I connect to the internet using my unlimited download allowance on my Iphone it's not going to cost me anything. But if I try to use same allowance with tethering it's 5C PER KB or I have to buy a poxy bolt on?!!?!?!

    Daylight ****in robbery.

You not going to like this but it is 1c per KB not 5c per kb.

If you are one of the older plans you can tether with your 1GB bundle.

You should contact Comreg and the ASAI to see if they can do anything about it. You were mis-sold a new plan that is limited to 3GB, so advertising it as unlimited was false advertising.

You've also been tricked into what looked like a better value plan to find out it isn't as after you moved they told you you would have to pay extra to use your 3GB of data via tethering.

So comreg may have a interest on the way you were sold the plan and asai will have an interested in the false and misleading advertising.

Not sure it'll get you anywhere but it's probably worth a shot.

Yeah lads - Daryll is right PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!!!!!!

Something that is completely Free to do on the older plans will ONLY cost you €10,485.76 per Gb on the new plans. NOT €52,428.8!!!!

You might have to sell the car or a child, but you won't lose the house!

what do you mean "older plans"

It's the iPhone plans that were out before the so-called "Unlimited" plans.

Look, the advertising of unlimited data plans was clearly misleading on the back of a well documented iPhone OS 3.0 which introduced tethering. Those initial customers who signed up to these new advance plans were tricked by o2. It's dispicable, and reason enought to leave the service providor.

Hi my current 02 contract is up next week and i was considering upgrading to an iphone. The main reason for me was the unlimited browser usage that they advertise.

Now i come along to boards and you guys are saying this unlimited data plan is actually limited to 3gb. Is this so? Who's telling the porkies?

And if this is the case how much internet browsing can you do with 3gb?
Sorry im not very tech savy, just want to be able to access the internet when im not at home for a reasonable price. Is that really so much to ask?

Even though O2 say Unlimited, they have a fair use policy which is 3GB. That is loads for browsing, email etc, but not so much if tethering.

You can't use any of the 3GB data for tethering, they charge you €10,485.76 per Gb as Philip pointed out above.

You can tether if you're on the older 1GB plans. If you want to go over the 1GB limit, then you can purchase a tethering bundle.

It's the newer "unlimited" plans that require the bundles.

I just got off the phone with o2 and she said my original plan wouldnt cover the tethering. i dont think they really have a clue anyway but i want to be sure before i get charged for it.

Just got off the phone with o2 and got the same story - they stated on the phone that tethering (without the bundle) on either the old or new plans was 1c per kB.

BTW I also got a very evasive statement that tethering was only supported by o2 from this week and so when I agreed to change my plan tethering wasn't supported hence, even if there was a difference between the plans in respect to tethering, that wasn't the case when the new plan was "sold" to me and hence I couldn't have been misled.

(edit) just followed up on the 02 forums:
Customers on the Old O2 Advance plans with 1GB bundle:
Advance 175, Advance 350, Advance 700, Advance Unlimited

You can use your 1GB bundle to tether however, should you run out of your allowance you will be charged 2c per MB overage. We would recommend you use one of the bundles available as detailed below.

Right so rang o2 again... Read the riot act act about them misleading me etc...

After a few minutes on hold (I suspect supervisors where involved) - they agreed that the quote the o2 forums is right and on the older plans you can use the 1GB allowance for tethering. They also aggreed to move me back onto my old plan immediately without charge.

Its a bonkers idea to use your iphone due to cost and speed. Its like paying for a T1 line and getting dialup speeds.

What exactly is a fair use policy? As far as i would be concerned if they say unlimited usage, then unlimited usage is fair!
    What am i missing?

You are missing that when they say 'umlimited' they are lying and they mean a 3GB cap and you can't use your data for what you want to (i.e tethering).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭Popoutman

I've heard an unsubstantiated rumour that iphones can be set up for tethering using settings from from places like here without having to download anything from O2 themselves.

Please note that this may be more useful for those that have jailbroken the phones and don't particularly want to 'upgrade' and lose the jailbreak.

If what I have seen is correct, this is effectively invisible to the operators apart from the possible change in usage patterns.

^ Only if you have 3.1 new software deletes it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,789 ✭✭✭✭keane2097

    1. connect iPhone to computer and check for software update using iTunes
    2. install new carrier file when prompted (restart iPhone if necessary)
    3. iPhone SETTINGS > GENERAL > NETWORK > INTERNET TETHERING (switch on)
    4. Connect tethered laptop via Bluetooth / USB

Can you do this without ugrading from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3?
