I know very little about wine but I've had a few different types of Argentinian wine lately that went down really well. Are there any popular brands / well known wines to look out for from Argentina or Chile that I could go for? Even up to mid range prices.

Etchart, Trapiche and Alta Vista are solid Argentine wines, and from Chile I'd recommend Cousino-Macul if you get them or the more commonly available Montes, Errazuriz, Concha Y Toro, Echeverria and Valdevieso.

I'm very partial to Argentinian Malbecs. Found Trapiche to be particularly nice, especially the reserve if you can get it - drank a lot of it over there last year. Also Don David is solid too.
Personally would take an argentinian over chilean any day.

Any wine made by Concha Y Toro will be of a decent quality. Another brand to look out for is Terrazas. Their Malbec is particularly good. Argentina has claimed this as their own grape now (even though it originated in Bordeaux). You'll find Terrazas in Tesco for around €12.99, although i've seen it in independent local off licences for €10.99.

Not a hugh wine buff but agree with the guys above about Argentinian Malbec and any brand I've had has been worth while.

Also a white that maybe not every one has heard of is the wonderful Torrontes variety and worth a try.

Another brand to look for Ramirez De Valezco especially for the above varities if it's available here.

Delicious. A big seller in specialist wine shops in England but Ive never been able to find a vendor for it in Ireland before now. Its really worth trying. It has the fruit of other Malbecs but has a little bit more going on as well, especially if its been open for half an hour or so first. Would highly recommend it.

No connection with that site by the way.

I had a good Malbec from O'Donovans in Cork recently

I was never a massive fan of Malbec but I've been trying a lot of it by the glass in restaurants in recent times and I've come across some super examples - of course, I forget all the producer names!

Torrontes, which somebody mentioned, is a beautiful grape too - very fresh, youthful and floral. I wouldn't get massively hung up on brands.
