Proper order. No talk of garrison games in here. :)

I agree guys. The ref has bottled it big time not sending Tommy off.

Have to agree big time, and that decision could have a huge impact on the game.

Thanks for that it's amazing I hadn't noticed it wasn't soccer that's being played.

I'm well aware it's not I was pointing out that he took the man out when in on goal. Under GAA rules that is minimum yellow and ref bottled it.

Why mention it then what relevance does it have? Why not mention that if it was basketball he'd be on three fouls

    What a player.

Also, Tommy Walsh, is a disgrace. A dirty hit into the back of Galway's number 13, is one dirty stroke too many.
I reiterate that. 2-06 and another 21 yard free.

EDIT: Over the bar. And another free, 2-08.

I mentioned it to give an example of the sanctions associated with a comparable event in a similar scenario. It was in order to highlight the severity which I feel should have been associated with such a foul.

The ref bottled it however the allowance of the use of personal judgement on the referees behalf in such a clear example of what would be a "professional foul" is something which perhaps needs review.

Anyway this is a pointless argument really. We agree that the ref bottled it and best to just leave it at that.

Great goal for Canning there. Kilkenny backs seem very dirty today don't they?!

Cyril Donnelan is having a great game. Think he's profiting from Kilkenny dropping Tennyson back in front of Canning and is having the freedom of the pitch.

OK I'm off to the pub, may the best (ahem) team win !
    /Galway !! :pac:

Edit: if Galway managed to win, they would be odds on to win the Bob O' Keefe cup, now that would be strange !

+1 Pulls up for the tinuiest tecnicalities and lets all rough stuff & 3rd man tackles go. Same goes for the Cars jostling off the ball. Still a cracking game, though.

KK 3 points up. Galway need to fight back.

    Straight Red for Richey Murry.

    Game Set Match KK.

Ironic that TW and EB could have been sent off for KK earlier.

Eoin Larkin showing why he got player of the year last year.

Kilkenny play a tough game but that Galway sending off was vile.

Good old ref. Was a wild swing alright but a bit quicker with the card than on Tommy Walsh.

Think Kilkenny have it at this stage. Are they actually beatable at this stage? Nobody will put up a display like Galway have again this year...and they still won't win.

Galway have ran out of steam, and are losing their rag. Galway havent scored in 22 mins

They're definitely beatable Tipp and Galway have shown that in the last few weeks - alot of teams in the last few years were beaten before the ball was thrown in but Tipp and Galway showed what you can do if you hurl with no fear against them, its definitely not as cut and dried as many think

I wouldnt rule out Tipp, but yeah hard to see anyone beating the cats. A quality team that look like getting 4 in a row.

Well they're hardly going to let themselves be pushed around now are they? :pac: Besides, they're no more as dirty as any of the opposition they play against.

Ya but my fear is that even when teams are outstanding against them they still don't win. I hope I'm wrong and will certainly be hoping they will be beaten...think it's safe to say they've Leinster won now anyway!

Yeah I know what you mean but speaking from a Tipp point of view we have a very young squad and will only improve and a big advantage Tipp seem to have is that a lot of the players the likes of Noel McGrath, Paraic Maher, Callinan etc. have no fear of KK because they have beaten them at minor ( and if rumours down here are to be believed Eoin Kelly has been back to he's best in training since the Cork game ;))

Kilkenny will only get better when some key players return.

I suppose one can't complain, but I'm confused as to how its Galway ended up with a player sent off and Kilkenny didn't.

a great game, Kilkenny's experience and sheer determination pulls them through. I dread to think of the result if Joe Canning was actually injured and couldn't play.
I'm sure we'll hear complaints and moaning about Tommy and Eddie maybe not seeing red, I agree Tommy was lucky to stay on the pitch but that doesn't excuse the Galway red, a nasty & dirty pull.

Fair point. Brennan, Walsh and Joyce should all have gotten the line. I suppose with his half a dozen or so fouls Kavanagh would have been lucky not to go as well.

Just back from the match. Another sickening defeat. But, on a positive note, we can come back and learn from this defeat. I would like to see Galway get another crack at Kilkenny later on in the championship, in Croke Park. I think Tullamore being a smaller pitch suited Kilkennys physicality.

Shane Kavanagh at Full-back seemed to do OK after all the hype about Galway having no full-back. If anything John Lee seemed to be the weak link in the first half and Comerford was making good progress on him. He seemed to grow into the game as it went on though. Damien Hayes failed to perform and even though Canning scored something like 2-9, the supply lines were not great after the first few minutes. Kilkenny seemed to drop Tennyson back ito play in front of Canning and cleared a lot of ball from just in front of the full-back line throughout the first half. Andy Smith should have been replaced earlier. He just isn't the kind of player needed to stop Walshs influence. Having said that, Walsh should have been sent off. What Murray did to be sent off after coming on was stupid.

Galways collapse is as much a pyschological failing as anything else. They got in front and then didn't seem to believe how well they were doing and invited the Kilkenny comeback by taking the foot off the pedal. But what baffled me most of all was Callinans persistance with the puckouts to keep hitting them short to Damien Joyce or Tierney when they were being closely marked. This cost Galway at least 4 points.

Eoin Larkin scroed 5 points from play off Adrian Cullinane who isn't a wing-back (David Collins was sorely missed here) and it was him with Shefflin that pulled Kilkenny back into it when Galway were on top. What can you do though, when Kilkenny can spring TJ Reid and Richie Hogan (1-10 in the League final) off the bench. They are just pure class.

This game will improve Galway to no end. There in nothing like a good championship match like that so early in the year against the best team in the country. Galway can learn from this and they were no disgrace. An extra bit of smartness in stead of persisting with the short puckouts when they were not working would have helped. I believe Galwy could beat this Kilkenny team later on in the championship if they learn from the mistakes they made today.

Canning needed to get a bit more help as well. Too often Damien Hayes fails to perform on the big stage for Galway. He has being doing it all year for Portumna. Niall Healy did well today as well as Cyril Donnellan, who I thought was excellent at centre-forward.

CyberDave I would have thought a wider pitch would suit Kilkenny even more, which was one of the reasons why Tipp narrowed the pitch for the league final I suspect.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭caesar

All in all a cracker of a game.....much better than the Mayo game before it, even though I enjoyed that one for obvious reasons.

Anyway TW was lucky imo and a little bit disappointing in his antics, but when he took the helmet off he seemed to channel his aggression in the right way. Having said that he wasnt the only one lucky to stay on. As for KK being a dirty team I dont agree. I thinks it because they are so focused on their job and coupled with the heat of battle they are sometimes a bit over the top....like all the great teams.

As for the ref, he was a bit iffy, but the game was so fast at times it was difficult to see and if he hadnt stopped the game on a few occasions I think it could have went the other way.....i.e out of control and far from free flowing.

An entertaining game anyway. As a Mayo hurler I cant wait to see the other challenges KK and GY face.

Well, for me a wider pitch would mean that it is easier to get through the that central Kilkenny wall of bodies that was so evident to me today when they started to turn the screw in the second half as this wall would not be as compact on a wider pitch. It would be easier to pick holes in it as such.

Having said that I can't just blame the pitch, Kilkenny are class all over the field. It probably makes getting beaten by them a little easier to swallow because they are so good, but god I am sick of them.

What a game already can they keep this pace up?? Canning is a class act and even though Ive defended him many times that sly dig from Tommy Walsh was very cowardly
Ref could have given Galway the advantage there. Would be in for a goal.
Same ref that stoped Eoin Kelly when in on goal and then pulled back Cork when they had the ball in the net - I wont give my true opinion of the man as i dont want to get banned but lets just say he's not my favourite ref in the world
Its not soccer and theres no such thing as a professional foul in GAA but yes agreed he should not be on the field infact he should have been gone before that incident if the ref or either of he's umpires had seen the first hit on Hayes
Proper order. No talk of garrison games in here. :)

No such thing as an advantage rule either ;)

+1 on the TW comments. Hard to believe the amount of comments on here today on one incident of a great game. Its a 70 min game, unfortunately Gal only played for 55. That was the difference on the day.
Have to say I love these tough intensive games; pity the ref was so fussy, to both sides
Reliance on Joe will cost Galway this summer. He's not helped by those around him, but the tactic of low ball to the full forwards is defo one they will use again.

I thought this game of skill today was simply inspiring to watch. Absolutely great game of hurling by both teams, talk about a fighting spirit to the final whistle!

I know there's no such thing as a positive defeat, but this will give Galway a huge boost. This will really stand to them in the qualifiers, and they'll definitely be the team to avoid.

Could you imagine if Galway were heading into the qualifiers without this match behind them and only their annual beating of Antrim to show for it? Regardless of who they draw in the qualifiers, a semi final must be within their reach at least.
