I would like to volunteer

I've been recently made unemployed and I am going back to college in september.
I was thinking about volunteering, and I'm not sure what to do.

I was a third year hairdressing apprentice and everyone has said to me I should offer my services to nursing homes ect, but I never learned how to do sets or the blowdrys that elderly people tend to like, so I didn't want to offer a service I can't do.

I'm also worried about somewhere not taking me because when I go back to college I won't be able to commit as much time and I don't want to start somewhere and then let them down come september.

I thought of the SVP, but I'm not relegious and I have heard that you say prayers with people you visit, that would make me a hypocrite!

Has anyone any advice for me please?:)

my brother volunteered on this a few years back. he found it to be challenging and rewarding. I don't remember him mentioning anything about it being overly religious.

is a starting point anyway, maybe some other people on this board can help you out with further info.
